Chapter 97: Chapter 97

The tides completely turned; after Mateo’s pounce, Liana was now only defending, barely holding him off.

As sweat dripped down her brows, her eyes were fully focused on every single one of Mateo’s moves.

Feint, uppercut, jab. Mateo kept switching his attacks, even trying to trip her up in his flurry of attacks, but she stayed her ground, seeing through all of his attacks.

Then he suddenly turned it up a notch, utilizing his superior strength and body to push her back. As Liana kept getting pushed back more and more, her composure started cracking.

That’s when Mateo saw his chance. In a single fluid motion, he got down on the ground and swept her feet from underneath her, making her fall to the ground.

Then he grabbed her arms and twisted them a little, making sure not to hurt her. He only wanted to immobilize her after all.

Liana glared at him. "I concede," she said, while still glaring.

With a smile he let her arm go, dusting his clothes once more as he looked her straight in the eyes. "Great job. Next!" he casually said with a professional smile on his face as he waved her off.

Abigail nodded, looking satisfied. "Great job, princess," she whispered when she walked past her.

Liana politely nodded at her as she took a seat next to Luan.

"Pretty good, but that wasn’t you, right?" Luan inquired; there was something clearly suspicious about Liana’s fighting style.

She leaned in close and whispered something in his ear: "Yeah, I can let those figures take over my body. For example, Dren, when I’m fighting and things like that, it is rather convenient."

"Ooh, that’s cool," Luan said, nodding along.

Liana smiled at his words, "That’s right, and it helps a lot as well. If push comes to shove, I can sleep while one of them takes over and keep doing paperwork days on end if we keep switching."

Luan’s mouth opened wide. "So that’s how you did it," he blurted out, thinking back to the time they were busy preparing plans on what to do with Vemire.

She had been working non-stop from Luan’s perspective. Every time he came to check on her or needed to discuss something, she would be awake no matter the hour. He was rather impressed, but after her explanation, he was even more impressed. This was a great skill to have.

Giving her a kiss on the cheek, Luan patted her head. "Great job," he said, his ears turning slightly red.

Liana suddenly froze, her ears turning bright red as her brain short-circuited. Dren and the others were all rolling their eyes at the two lovebirds. Still, they all had bright smiles on their faces.

Both of them turned to look at Benjamin, who stood in front of Mateo now, trying to play it off.

Even though each of them kept glancing around, making sure no one had seen it. But to both of their dismay, they saw the imperial guards gave them knowing stares, and when two of them imitated what had just happened, Luan and Liana turned around, focusing all their attention on the battle.

In the center of the playground, Mateo stood, this time his whole body had transformed into the more animalistic form once more.

But the same could be said for Benjamin; his whole body had also transformed into what looked like a mix between a crimson lion and a human.

Both of them staring each other down, Mateo suddenly opened his mouth. "After testing your little sister, it’s your turn now. Let’s see how much you have mastered your sigil and improved your combat techniques," he said.

"After you," he stated, taunting Benjamin a little.

But he stayed calm; he knew that if he wanted to do as well or better than Liana and Luan, he would have to go all out the whole time. He couldn’t afford to half-ass it.

As they slowly walked around in circles, carefully inspecting each other, looking for any kind of opening, the other students started yawning, but Abigail, Liana, and Luan were all hyper-focused on this battle.

Luan was rather curious what type of sigil he had and how he would compare to that monster.

Then a sudden change took place as both of them disappeared from their spots, and metal clashing could be heard throughout the training grounds.

But only a handful of people could follow what was actually happening between the two people fighting.

At first even Luan couldn’t follow it, but after merging with Vira and having her strengthen his eyesight, he could follow everything clearly, and what he saw left him amazed.

Benjamin was clearly inferior in mastery of his sigil and pure physical prowess, but he was doing a rather good job of keeping up with Mateo.

As he wasn’t getting pushed back by Mateo’s special combat style. As both of them kept clashing, sometimes Benjamin fell for Mateo’s tricks, and he would eat some nasty punches and kicks.

But he was completely unbothered, like he was completely locked in, hyper-focused on the battle. The longer the fight kept going, the more excited Luan became.

Even though he was continuously getting pushed back and he hadn’t landed a single proper hit, Luan knew that if he kept training diligently and wasn’t discouraged by this setback, he would for sure become a superpower in the future.

Just thinking about it was enough to almost make me salivate. Then the two stopped their intense clash, standing opposite each other.

Intensely glaring at one another, "The climax is coming," Luan muttered to himself, completely immersed in the amazing battle he was witnessing.

Abigail was furiously scribbling notes down in her notebook while keeping her eyes peeled to the two figures.

Turning more and more into beasts, Mateo and Benjamin both had ecstatic looks on their faces. "Let’s wrap it up," Mateo said.

Benjamin nodded, and they disappeared once more, but this time, instead of hundreds of minor clashes, when they made impact, a massive crater appeared beneath them, blowing everything in their vicinity outward.

All the other students had to close their eyes and cover them with their arms. But Luan couldn’t miss this, so he just created a perfectly see-through water wall protecting himself and Liana.

Then Benjamin fell from the sky, but before he hit the ground, Mateo caught him. With a proud look on his face.

"You did great; you can be proud of yourself," he said to the unconscious Benjamin as he placed him close to Luan and Liana.
