Chapter 94: Chapter 94
"Ah, I am also the current principal of this academy." He leisurely added, like it wasn’t a big deal.
All the students stood there with their mouths wide open. The emperor’s older brother was the principal? How is that possible?
The servants and guards heaved a sigh of relief as they lowered their guards; they hadn’t expected anyone to be able to break into the academy, but you never know.
"Now that the introductions are out of the way, I’ll explain the tests you will need to take this year," Mateo declared with a grin on his face.
All the students eagerly awaited his explanation; after all, he was also an imperial, so if they left a good impression, it might give them a huge jumpstart in life.
Abigail, on the other hand, rolled her eyes at his over-the-top display; she couldn’t understand it. He had never worked hard and had become the principal purely out of connections.
Although she had to admit he was capable, albeit with his own quirks.
"There will be three different tests this year because the academy evaluated a lot of you to have a promising future, especially one of you." He casually said, glancing at Luan.
"The first test will consist of fighting against me, and I will give you a grade ranging from F to SSS. I will be judging you on some factors that we have decided on, but I will not be telling you all these factors." With a smirk, he let out a little fighting spirit.
The students had to do their best to stay on their feet—well, everyone except Liana and Benjamin, as they were also from the imperial bloodline, so they didn’t feel anything.
When Luan felt it, he felt his heart beat faster and faster; he could hardly wait to step into the ring and fight this guy. A massive grin spread across his face.
Mateo carefully observed everyone’s reactions and made sure to make mental notes, including their reactions in their final results. Abigail was observing them as well.
She would also grade them, but they wouldn’t tell the students that this was also part of the test. After combining Mateo’s and Abigail’s scores, that would become the final score for this first test.
After Mateo cleared his throat, he retracted the fighting spirit and continued with the explanation.
"After that there will be a simulation of a random event, and you will be graded based on your performance. The goal is simple: complete the objective no matter what. Completing the objective is fifty percent of your grade; the other fifty is based on the actions you took."
Liana raised her hand. When the principal saw that, he raised an eyebrow but nonetheless stopped his explanation.
"Go ahead," he said.
"Unc—Principal Mateo, those simulations, are they all solo as well? Because if so, wouldn’t that be disadvantageous for certain students?" She politely asked.
"You make a good point, Liana. But you’re forgetting something: the simulations are totally random, so someone that is specialized in stealth could get a defend-the-castle simulation where the objective is to protect the castle and not kill all the monsters. So there are going to be bad situations, but if you can’t even deal with that, how could you be useful to the empire?" When he said that, his eyes turned ice cold.
As he looked at all the students. "The goal is still to nurture promising youths into proper nobles to help support the Emperor’s reign. We don’t need useless scrubs."
Then his atmosphere shifted once more. "Does that answer your question?" he inquired with a smile on his face.
Liana nodded. "I understand; thank you for the explanation," she said with a slight bow.
"Ok, then the third test will be a tournament-style battle royale that will not take place today but tomorrow, as we will be disqualifying certain students today based on their theoretical exam results and the results of the first two practical exams."
"And with that, let us start with the first test. Follow me."
Just like that, they all made their way deeper into the building, where they arrived in front of a massive training ground. It looked to be about as big as ten football fields.
Standing around the edge, Mateo glanced at all the students. "Abi, who was the one that finished their theoretical first?" he casually asked.
Abigail shot him a nasty glare but stayed composed. "Liana Alderon was the first one to finish," she still replied, even though she wanted to beat him up right now.
"As expected, you were always very smart. Now I give you three options. Liana, first you start with this test, followed by the one who handed in their exam as second, and so on. Second, we do the opposite: the one who handed in their exam last will go first, and so on. And the final option is a mystery, so choose carefully." Mateo said with his hands behind his back, looking into the distance.
Liana carefully considered all the options, but curiosity got the best of her, and she decided on the third option.
"I will choose the third option," she resolutely said.
After he heard that, a massive grin spread across Mateo’s face. And he gave her a thumbs-up.
"Great choice, Abi, your turn." After saying that, he leisurely walked toward the middle of the training ground.
"Tch, alright, since you chose the third option, that means I will be deciding the order."
After the students heard that, everyone heaved a sigh of relief because they knew whom she disliked the most.
The one guy that slept during the theoretical exam was most definitely going to suffer the most, as the principal was still in top condition, so the fight would be that much harder.
With a satisfied smile on her face, Abigail pointed at Luan, "You there, Luan Meskevela, you’re up first."
"Alright, beautiful. I’ll be back." He said, as he also leisurely walked toward the middle of the field.
