Chapter 38: Chapter 38

The wolves lay there sprawled out beneath the trees, their sleek fur sticking out like a sore thumb. Some dozed with ears twitching, while others gnawed on the bones of a fresh kill, their muzzles stained red.

The trio looked at the wolves and glanced at each other, seeing Luan grin so broadly Kian had a headache.

This young lord loved fighting way too much; he almost missed serving the lord’s mother, who always stayed back and ordered the knights and servants to do all the fighting.

But Luan, he was the complete opposite, jumping headfirst into dangerous situations and even using himself as bait.

Kian nodded at Kafele, and the two grasped their weapons tightly, waiting for when Luan would recklessly jump in.

Luan looked at the two yawning; seeing them grasp their weapons, he tilted his head a little. "Why are you grabbing your weapon?" he asked, not caring about the pack of wolves just ahead.

When Kian heard those words come out of Luan’s mouth, he almost facepalmed. But he had to be alert now; wolves had great hearing, so now they must be aware of their presence.

"My lord, please use your head next time. Now we don’t have the element of surprise anymore." Kian whispered while keeping an eye on the wolves that were slowly approaching the trio.

Luan waved Kian off, "Why surprise attack this bunch of weaklings?" he stated.

Then with a wave of his arm, he threw multiple lightning spears straight at the cautiously approaching wolves.

Some of the wolves were directly pierced by the spears, and others barely dodged on time. The spears grazed their gray fur, leaving burn marks.

Enraged, the pack rushed straight at the trio, growling.

Seeing this, Kian just sighed; he had expected Luan to pull some kind of stunt, but this... he just stood there, unsure of what to do next, staring at the approaching wolves.

"Get to work, guys; I’ll watch from here." Luan teasingly said, taking a seat in a tree.

Kian and Kafele rolled their eyes, grasping their weapons tightly, preparing for the confrontation with the wolves.

Kian erased his presence, moving with incredible speed and appearing behind the wolves. With a single nod toward Kafele, he knew the plan immediately.

Taking a defensive stance and gripping his sword tightly, the blade’s edge started shining red, and the first wolf that jumped at him was cut cleanly in half.

Kafele, not relaxing his guard, jumped backward to make sure he wasn’t surrounded by the wolves who were slowly approaching while sniffing, looking for the two other humans they had spotted earlier.

The leader looked up, seeing the humans seated on a tree branch waving at them; it became enraged. Growling loudly, the wolves stopped their careful approach and started focusing all their attention solely on Kafele.

But what they failed to notice was that their numbers kept dwindling, heads started rolling, and before he knew it, the leader was the only one left.

Baring his teeth, he glared at the three humans who surrounded it.

"Stop!" Luan shouted; while watching the battle, he had come up with an idea he wanted to try.

Kian and Kafele looked at him, raising an eyebrow. "What’s the problem, my lord?" Kian asked, slightly bowing, while still keeping his guard up.

"Leave him alive. I want to try something." Luan said, grinning.

Jumping out of the tree, he landed in front of the wolf, and with a snap of his fingers, a choker made out of water and lightning appeared around its neck.

Kafele pointed at the choker. "Are you planning to domesticate it??" he asked.

"Well, yeah. That’s the plan, but I’ll see how it goes." Luan nonchalantly said.

Now it was Kian’s turn to be surprised. "Why, my lord? What’s the point of domesticating it after slaughtering his whole pack?" he asked, pinching the bridge of his nose.

"I’ll need it for something I’m planning, and having a loyal guard dog is always welcome." Luan replied.

Then the wolf jumped at Luan, mouth spread wide open, but as soon as it showed aggression, the lightning in the choker hit it with full force.

Whimpering, the wolf fell on the ground, electrocuted.

Luna just clicked his tongue, rolling his eyes at the wolf’s pathetic attempt.

"My lord, that’s a wolf, not a dog." Kafele stated.

"Yeah, yeah, I know that much. But isn’t it quite cute? Like, take a closer look." Luan said, petting the wolf, who was still growling at him.

But it couldn’t move because of the shock it had just received.

"That’s supposed to be cute?" Kafele mumbled, looking at Kian.

Kian shrugged, spreading both his hands outward, palms up, as if to say, Beats me.

"Alright, let’s go back. I’m hungry. Oh, and Kian, pull this um, Bart with us. Yeah, his name is Bart; deal with it." Luan stated, not minding the wolf anymore and leisurely making his way back to the carriage.

Kafele glanced at Kian and, with a nod, followed after Luan, looking at him with disdain. "Why Bart? That’s such a shitty name for a wolf; it should at least sound cool," he protested, trying to save the wolves dignity.

Luan looked at the pleading Kafele with a smile, "Because it was the first name that came up in my head. So for now he’s Bart." Luan said, clasping his hands behind his head while Vira lay on his head.

Feeling the spirit on his head, Luan was a little surprised he hadn’t summoned her, but then again, she was a very needy spirit; not summoning her for too long might come back to bite him in the ass.

So he just left her there while walking back toward the carriage humming, with Kafele following close behind him, still grumbling about the name of the wolf.

After arriving at the carriage, Luan loudly called out. "Bring out the table and the food; I’m hungry."

Ava, who was tending to the horses, was startled by his statement, just like the horses, trying to calm them down.

"My lord, please think about the horses; without them, the trip will take a lot longer," she said, trying to warn him without sounding too rude.

Luan shrugged, "Okay, I’ll try, but I can’t make any promises," he replied.
