Chapter 33: Chapter 33
Kian placed the sack on the table and gestured for Guido to open it. The stench was awful—like rotting flesh. Hesitant but intrigued, Guido pulled the sack closer and peered inside. His eyes widened. A decapitated head stared back at him.
What he saw left him stunned; glancing at Kian, he saw that he was still just sitting there, not planning to explain why he had shown him this, so he opened the sack all the way up to inspect the decapitated head.
Clearing his throat, he looked at Kian. "What’s the meaning of this?" he demanded, locking eyes with Kian.
Kian met his gaze without hesitation. "It’s a bandit’s head."
"The lord wanted to know if we could get any bounty or anything for the corpses or heads of bandits; we wiped a whole gang out near the capital."
Guido just stared at Kian, not knowing what to say. ’His lord asked that? What kind of noble does that?’ He couldn’t understand it at all.
But he quickly regained his composure; standing up with the sack in hand, he bowed slightly toward Kian and the two girls. "I will have to check some things; Celia will be here in a moment with some tea and refreshments," he said, leaving the room urgently.
Kian smirked; even he hadn’t expected Luan to be so ingenious. Even though he didn’t agree with how Luan had used the artifact his parents had given him, he had to admit Luan was resourceful.
A sigh escaped from between his lips as he looked at the chest and remembered how many other bodies were in it. He glanced at Ava and Samantha and decided he would send the two out when he would start discussing the bounties with the guild.
Ava and Samantha sat there frozen, their faces almost as white as a ghost’s. Ava turned to Kian, pulling the hem of his suit.
"Was that a real human head?" she meekly asked, barely holding it together.
Kian looked at her and just started patting her and Samantha’s head. "Don’t worry too much; they were bandits that kidnapped, killed, and did many other despicable things. They deserved it," he reassured the two girls.
But thinking back on how Luan had slaughtered them all, he felt maybe he might’ve gone a little overboard. Because not all of them had committed those horrible crimes.
But on the other hand, you can’t go around checking bandits for crimes they did and didn’t commit; they’re parasites stealing from the hard-working populace. Deep down, he did agree with Luan’s method, even though his goal was mostly the loot.
A smile spread across his face while he was patting the two girls trying to make them feel better, ’It’s going to be a hectic time serving the young lord, but that’s also the fun part,’ he mused.
While he was reminiscing and patting the girls on the head, he suddenly heard knocks on the door.
"You may enter," he replied.
Celia entered the room holding a serving tray with sweets and refreshments.
"I have some sweets and refreshments; would you like any?" she politely asked, barely suppressing her enthusiasm. She had heard the dismantlers talk about how much they estimated all those goblins to be worth, and it was way more than she had anticipated.
So even though she hated that bastard noble with a passion, she was still grateful he had chosen her as his exclusive receptionist.
"Thank you very much, young lady." Kian replied, filling a cup of tea and sipping it elegantly, while Samantha and Ava were gobbling up the sweets.
Celia giggled a little at this bizarre scene, ’How could a bastard like that have servants this friendly?’ It was a mystery to Celia, one that she would likely never solve because she assumed Luan would leave the capital in the next couple of days.
Which was both a relief and regrettable; where else would she find such a profitable adventurer? But she also didn’t want to risk her job every time he entered the guild.
"Is something wrong, young lady?" Kian asked, seeing Celia make weird movements with her head.
"Ah, I’m sorry I was lost in thought." She blurted out, bowing deeply, her cheeks flushing slightly red.
’How could I do this in front of clients? Get a grip, Celia!’ she shouted in her head, slapping both her cheeks at once.
Samantha and Ava both giggled at this silly display of Celia while still munching on the sweets she had brought.
Celia, after slapping herself, quickly excused herself from the room, leaving the trio alone to enjoy their refreshments, and went back to her register.
In the room, Kian looked at the closed door, where Celia had just exited. Seemingly contemplating something.
With a sigh he took out two letters Luan had given him. ’You’re going to have a tough time at the beginning, but I think you’ll like it after a while, so don’t give up too soon,’ he thought, as his eyes turned resolute.
After finishing the sweets and tea Celia had provided, Guido arrived again holding that same sack; with a shocked expression, he took a seat across from Kian once more.
"You said you wiped this guy’s whole gang out?" he asked, wanting to confirm it.
Kian nodded at Guido’s words. "Samantha, Ava, you two may leave; just wait outside the door; I’ll be out soon as well." Kian ordered.
Samantha and Ava were both surprised, but with no delay left the room, stationing themselves on either side of the door.
Confirming that the two had left the room, Kian took out a couple more sacks, displaying their contents on the table.
Looking at the body pieces lying on the table, Guido looked surprised at Kian. "Did you clear this whole thing out with the knights? This particular group has been plaguing the roads to and from the capital for months."
Kian didn’t reply, shrugging. "So do they have a bounty? Or any kind of monetary reward?" he asked, not beating around the bush.
