Chapter 111: Chapter 111

After a rough night, Luan left his room with a neutral expression on his face. He had barely slept at all because he was too busy coming up with all kinds of strategies. But in the end, most were rather unrealistic because of his subordinate’s limited abilities. If only they could get upgraded. His life would become so much easier, but alas.

With a deep sigh, he strolled throughout the fortress; he quickly went toward the cafeteria, and after eating a large breakfast, he made his way down to the training grounds, where everyone was busily training.

The mages fell one after another like a sack of potatoes only to be healed by the healers right after—rinse and repeat. And while the foot soldiers weren’t falling unconscious, they were constantly swinging their swords or dueling.

It was a hectic morning; Luan just took a seat somewhere inconspicuous and inspected them all. He wanted to learn their exact combat prowess to be able to tailor his strategies to their abilities.

This way he would be able to craft more intricate strategies, but with that came risks, like if he was off by even a little bit, the whole thing would totally collapse and most of them would be wiped out.

Time slowly passed like that. Luan kept jotting down notes on the papers he had taken with him about everyone’s exact combat prowess. And he was constantly modifying the strategies he had formed with the division leaders yesterday.

Then the whole fortress started shaking once more, and everyone knew what that meant by now. Without Luan having to order them, the division leaders carefully instructed everyone on what they had to do.

With worried looks in their eyes, was what the general had said really coming true? A monster wave every day?

Shaking their heads slightly, they pushed the negative thoughts out. They needed to keep up the morale; if the soldiers saw that even the leaders’ spirits were low, that would only put them at a disadvantage.

Luan smiled slightly, excited that he could test out his new strategies, but he was also worried: would he be able to beat this wave safely?

’I guess I’ll go check out how big it is,’ he thought, excited at the thought of another exhilarating battle that was about to take place.

Rushing outside, he went past all the soldiers and leaders who saluted him politely. Luan gave them all a nod as four—two pairs of see-through wings—formed on his back, and he took flight to check out what kind of wave it was this time.

But what he saw left him baffled. "What the fuck," he muttered as he flew over hundreds of thousands of monsters; the last two waves they had beaten looked like child’s play compared to this one.

The only thing he could see were hundreds of thousands of different kinds of monsters, unlike the last wave, where the monsters in the wave were mostly divided into a couple of types of monsters.

This current wave had everything, from ogres to goblins and even hellhounds. There were so many different kinds of monsters that Luan didn’t even know all of them; his earlier excitement only rose further seeing the wave.

He knew this would be it; life or death would be decided today, and even if he could beat it, the next wave would surely be too much to handle.

As he flew back toward the fortress, he landed in front of everyone that was gearing up with confident expressions on their faces.

When they saw the general land, they all shut up immediately and looked expectantly at him.

Luan looked right back at everyone, and after clearing his throat, he started the briefing. "This current fight will be almost impossible to win."

After those words left his mouth, everyone looked horrified. After beating not one but two waves already, they were all feeling confident, but now that confidence was shaken by a singular sentence from Luan.

"But, ’almost’ doesn’t mean it’s totally impossible. So we will fight and win!" He shouted as he slapped his chest.

"This current wave is nothing like the two previous ones; it is much bigger. And the monsters inside it are stronger as well. If we combine the two previous waves together, it wouldn’t hold a candle to this current one," he seriously said.

Right now this is what Luan felt was needed the most, not fake bullshit. But just the cold, harsh truth, because after they saw the full extent of the wave, if Luan had given them some flowery words, he felt like the morale would immediately plummet to the ground.

"But I will be giving it my all because I truly believe we can beat this wave. And I want you all to trust me on this: we can beat it. It might seem hopeless at first; that was also my first reaction. But with everyone here, we will survive!" Luan shouted as he raised a sword he had formed at some point during his speech.

When the soldiers saw that, they all also raised their own weapons, cheering Luan’s speech on.

"As for the strategy, mages and archers in the back, and everyone else stay with your own division and bunch up. Follow the leader’s directions because I will be supporting everyone with my abilities," Luan stated.

The leaders all bowed deeply and immediately after made their way toward their specified block. They had even planned for a wave like this even if no one wanted to believe it was possible.

But life isn’t fair, and that was all too apparent for everyone here. After losing their country, they needed to fight desperately for survival, even fighting off multiple monster waves, and now a wave so monstrous even the general was discouraged?

But they could use this frustration to empower them, as everyone tightly grasped their weapons; they all carefully stared ahead, and what they saw left them horrified.

They had hoped the general was maybe exaggerating to make sure they were prepared for the worst. But this was a hundred times worse than what they expected.
