Chapter 110: Chapter 110

All the exhausted soldiers rushed inside, helping all the injured as the ones that weren’t as injured tried to drag as many monster corpses as they could with them.

Dimitri and the other leaders forced themselves up after hearing the general’s urgent tone and started directing all the soldiers so they could as efficiently as possible get everyone inside.

While also retrieving arrows, spears, and monster corpses. Luan was overlooking it all from atop the fortress’s watchtower, a slight smile on his face.

"The easier waves I can relax and spare myself for the harder waves," he muttered, as he summoned Mara once more.

"You know what to do, right?" he seriously said, looking at the now blood-red river filled with monster corpses to the brim.

Without a reply, Mara flew down toward the river and dove straight in.

Then Luan turned around and made his way down toward everyone that had just rushed inside. After he heard a loud sound of the doors being closed and Dimitri and Raymond seated against it, breathing heavily, he started clapping.

Everyone quickly turned their heads when they heard someone clapping, but when they saw it was the general, they all relaxed visibly.

Without his help, the casualties would’ve been far worse. And luckily it looked like his condition was rather stable.

Then all the soldiers also started clapping as some shed tears while others did a small prayer. Everyone was ecstatic that they were still alive after that brutal battle they had just survived.

"Great job, everyone. Now eat to your heart’s content and get a good night’s sleep," Luan announced.

"Yes, sir!" All the soldiers shouted in unison as they all slowly stood up and stumbled toward the cafeteria, where large amounts of food stood ready for them.

When they smelled the aroma coming from there, all their exhaustion seemed to melt away as they started running toward it; the smell of freshly fried meat that they hadn’t eaten for months was too alluring.

Luan just looked at all the soldiers rushing toward the cafeteria with a smile on his face as he went to help Raymond and Dimitri up.

"Luckily we had just started discussing those strategies, or it would have been a lot worse," he said softly, a serious look in his eyes.

Dimitri and Raymond both nodded their heads. He was right; if they hadn’t done that this morning, it could have been way worse, maybe even opting the general to step in once more, which would aggravate his injuries.

Lowering the survival rate of the base significantly. "You are a true general," Dimitri suddenly blurted out, tears streaming down his face.

Luan raised an eyebrow at Dimitri’s breakdown. "What’s wrong?" he asked, a concerned look on his face.

"I was doubting your ability purely because you criticized the sacred doctrine issued by a now non-existent church. But after these last couple of days, and especially now," he started between sobs. "After seeing how happy they are to eat meat once more. And they will definitely need it after such a grueling battle."

Luan’s eyes widened at Dimitri’s explanation. "Don’t worry about it. I know it must have been hard; things like that will always happen, and it’s better to voice them. Instead of bottling them up, that would only lead to deeper issues that are harder to solve," he stated, slapping Dimitri’s shoulder a couple of times.

"Thanks, general, I will do my utmost from now on!" Dimitri then declared with a deep bow as he almost fell face-first onto the ground.

Luan grabbed his shoulder just in time and yanked him upwards, making sure he wouldn’t embarrass himself.

The other division leaders were doing the same, but they knew their limits, as they all bowed toward Luan. After seeing the effects those strategies had during today’s battle, their trust in the general multiplied manifold.

If the general was akin to a king before, he was now closer to a god than an emperor. Luan smiled brightly as he gave them all a thumbs up.

"Now you all go eat as well and get a good night’s sleep as well. If it continues like this, it will be a wave every day, so make sure you rest up for tomorrow’s battle," he said, with a concerned expression on his face.

Just thinking about the possibility of that was downright depressing. But he couldn’t do anything about it. He was just going to try his best, and whatever happens, happens.

When Dimitri and the others heard that, their earlier enthusiasm faded like it had never been there in the first place.

As they all turned around and wobbled toward the cafeteria to eat the prepared meals. They couldn’t muster any enthusiasm anymore after what Luan had said.

But they weren’t going to tell the soldiers either; if they did, the morale would drop to an all-time low, and that would be detrimental for the survival of everyone.

After surviving two of those horrendous monster waves, they couldn’t do that to the soldiers, so while they were all feasting and celebrating the victory with delicious food, the leaders each took a tray and loaded it with food.

Before leaving the cafeteria to go eat it somewhere else, so as not to ruin the mood. And disturb the festive atmosphere.

Luan did the same, grabbing a tray filled with food, and went up to his own room. A serious expression on his face the whole walk there.

After he went inside, he glanced outside the window and saw Mara and Torg still hard at work cleaning up the river and flawlessly executing Luan’s plans.

His earlier somber expression lightened slightly, but it was still a dire situation, so he sat down at his desk, and while eating, he went right back to revising strategies and coming up with new ideas.

There was no time for rest here; he was determined to try out as many strategies as possible, and after he hopefully defended the fortress, he wanted to try killing the ogre king even if he knew it was almost impossible.
