Chapter 109: Chapter 109
After Luan’s barrier cracked, chaos ensued; the monsters’ cautiousness completely disappeared as they all dove headfirst at the humans now without their damned wall. That made them basically sitting ducks.
All the soldiers at the front line, together with Dimitri, saw one monster after the other jump over the river without a care in the world. They saw the monsters that had jumped before them get pierced or cut in half, but they still kept going.
Like that, the once one-sided battlefield started shifting as the monsters were slowly overwhelming the soldiers on the front line.
As one monster after the other was able to land across the river, they started to wreak havoc, attacking any human in sight. Tearing a piece of flesh from legs or, worse, biting off a hand.
Desperate screams sounded all over the battlefield, and Luan was nervously watching everything from his safe place. He wanted to jump in, but he couldn’t. Firstly, he needed to heal, and secondly, this was also a good learning opportunity for them.
These things were no joke, and it looked like they were taking it too lightly. So with this rather weak wave, it was a good place to teach them that everything needed to be done with one thousand percent effort.
There was no such thing as half-assing in this life-and-death situation. As a massive, ethereal image of himself formed above his head.
With a single swing of the ethereal figure’s hand, all the screaming subsided, and the monsters that had jumped across the river started shivering, looking around as if they were inside the tiger’s den.
Everyone felt empowered right now, like the earlier panic was a dream. Now, with flawless teamwork and under Dimitri’s lead, they slowly started wiping out all the monsters that were wreaking havoc earlier.
Mara and Torg had also begun killing monsters everywhere in their back ranks. To give the soldiers some breathing room.
Luan was sweating profusely, but this much was doable, as he leaned against the brick wall. Breathing heavily.
"We can do this! The general is with us!" Dimitri shouted, and when the soldiers heard that, they all screamed at the top of their lungs as they started cutting and stabbing all the jumping monsters, making sure not a single one could get across the river anymore.
They had seen what happened when they allowed that, so now with laser focus they didn’t care about killing them anymore; as long as they landed in the river, that was enough. These weaker monsters couldn’t swim, and the river was very deep.
The intense battle continued for hours, as sometimes the monsters still managed to land across the river and wreak havoc. But the soldiers were much more composed, and they had even formed a small unit to deal with those occurrences.
The mages fell unconscious one after the other after pushing their bodies to the absolute limit; now only Amalia was still standing, but only barely. As she wobbled a couple of times, supported by two healers.
"Lady Amalia, please rest," one of the healers said, with a concerned look in her eyes.
But Amalia just shook her head, glaring at the monsters who were still jumping one after the other.
"No! I will keep firing spells until I lose consciousness. That was the strategy, and we will need every bit of firepower we can get. There have been very few casualties as of now, and we want to keep it that way!" she proudly declared as she conjured multiple fire lances and launched them across the river.
Right after that, she and the two healers who were supporting her felt the weight increase suddenly, and with a helpless sigh, they carefully placed her on the ground.
"Let’s keep going! We can’t disappoint now after she went this far," a young man said, glancing at the unconscious Amalia.
The other healer nodded, and together they ran across the battlefield on the lookout for any wounded or unconscious soldiers.
At the front lines, Dimitri was slowly losing hope. Even he hadn’t expected the general’s help to make this big a difference.
The wave yesterday was much larger, and there were more powerful monsters, but it was still finished in a super short time.
But now they had no one with such firepower, and even with the support of him, they were barely holding on while the seemingly endless wave of monsters kept coming even though they were constantly being killed by arrows, spirits, and magic.
His once hopeful eyes now looked somber, but he had to push through. He couldn’t give up. He was finally seeing the end of the wave as the monsters started visibly thinning out.
Gritting his teeth, he glanced around, and he saw all the other soldiers with the same look in their eyes as his own.
"Don’t give up now! We are almost done; let’s kill all these bastards and feast after!" he shouted, trying to rile them all up one last time.
When the soldiers heard that, they all grasped their swords or spears tightly, and all in unison shouted, "Yes!"
After the other divisions heard that energetic shout, they also shouted back, and like that, the final push started.
Monster after monster was getting cut, pierced, or impaled by Mara and Torg, and like that, every single one of them died.
When the last kill was confirmed, almost everyone fell to the ground in pure exhaustion. And Raymond and his healers ran around trying to heal as many of the injured soldiers as possible.
Dimitri slowly propped himself up as he looked around at the battlefield. Dead soldiers to his left and right and hundreds of thousands of monster corpses inside and across the river.
He heaved a sigh of relief as he looked upwards to the sky. "Thank you," he muttered to the sun that was slowly going down.
That was when it hit him just how long they had been fighting for their lives. Multiple hours of pure carnage and bloodshed.
"Everyone hurry inside!" They suddenly heard the general’s voice echo throughout the battlefield.
