Chapter 108: Chapter 108
Once at the top of the watchtower, Luan peered into the distance, and when he saw the wave of monsters, he heaved a sigh of relief. It was a relatively small wave consisting of mostly goblins and kobolds. Together with Mara, he drew "A8" in the sky above the heads of all the soldiers so the leaders could see it clearly.
And right after, with a wave of his arm, he summoned the spiritual barrier and his spirit guardians, stationing them among the hundreds of soldiers grasping their weapons that were staring at the large "A8."
When Amalia saw those letters, she also heaved a sigh of relief, but that didn’t last long. Immediately after, she started barking orders at all the mages, and Dimitri and the other leaders did the same. Even though it was one of the weaker waves, that did not mean they could relax.
It was still a life-or-death situation, as the general was going to only support them when they were in dire need of it. The best outcome would be that he wouldn’t have to step in at all and could just relax at the top of the watchtower.
A couple minutes later everyone was in position, and the doors to the fortress were tightly shut with the women kneeling inside it. Praying to Nylar for victory.
The children, on the other hand, were rather clueless, but seeing all the adult men dress in cool clothes and leave the fortress made them very curious. Luckily there weren’t any ways for them to sneak out, as they were being watched every second and were locked inside a room without places they could sneak out from.
Outside, the men all stared at the incoming wave of monsters, gulping nervously. But they knew they had to stay strong right now. Last time it was the general that had saved them, and this time it was their turn.
The wave looked a lot smaller and weaker as well. That’s probably the reason the general decided to stay back and let them handle it, most soldiers thought, with determined expressions on their faces.
Slowly the seconds turned into minutes as they all nervously waited for the monsters to enter their range to fire arrows and magic.
"Fire!" Dimitri shouted at the top of his lungs.
And all hell broke loose; hundreds of spells, arrows, and even spears were flung at the incoming monster wave.
As explosions echoed throughout, goblins were blown to pieces as arrows pierced hundreds of them, the magic spells causing even more devastation, and it looked like half the wave had been blown away in a single attack.
The men at the front lines started cheering loudly, the soldiers’ morale skyrocketing. But their leader, Dimitri, had a solemn look on his face.
"A8 isn’t that easy," he muttered to himself. Then he slapped his armor a couple times with the blunt side of his blade.
"Stay focused! Even though it might look easy, never underestimate monsters, especially in desperate situations. Stay calm, properly assess the situation, and stay in formation!" he calmly ordered.
Luan was carefully observing everything happening down there, enhancing his eyes and ears with the help of Vira. He nodded, pleasantly surprised at Dimitri’s composed nature.
"He is very capable, although his religious side is a little problematic," he muttered, but he had a massive grin on his face.
Then the monsters finally arrived at the now empty river, as they all started jumping, trying to devour all the humans on the other side.
With pure looks of madness in their eyes, like human meat was the only thing they cared about, even dying didn’t matter as long as they could have even a single taste.
But when a rather large goblin champion was about to smash a soldier’s head, he hit an invisible wall, Luan’s spiritual barrier he had set up over the whole fortress reaching the inside of the river.
After the soldiers saw that, the glimmer of doubt in their eyes completely disappeared as they all started stabbing, piercing, and attacking all the monsters that were trying to jump over the river.
But every single time they would hit an invisible wall, with confused looks on their faces, their hearts would be pierced by spears, or they would be cut in half by swords.
By screaming humans who, with every kill, gained more and more momentum, Dimitri as well as his earlier doubts were long gone as he focused on killing as many monsters as possible.
The general had explained to them that this protective shield is strong, but he couldn’t maintain it for super long in his current condition, so they had to act fast.
While the soldiers close to the river were focusing on the jumping monsters, the mages and archers were still bombarding the back of the wave with large spells and hundreds of flaming and explosive arrows.
Amalia and her unit were pushing their bodies to their absolute limit, with Raymond’s unit running around like lunatics supplying mana to all the mages who were about to collapse from mana exhaustion.
The once dreaded news about a new wave appearing with the general still recovering didn’t seem too bad anymore.
Crack!
Everyone suddenly heard as the invisible protective barrier Luan had put up completely shattered.
Dimitri and the soldiers at the front gritted their teeth; now it was all or nothing. They had to use their own bodies to stop the monsters from jumping in now.
Luan clicked his tongue at his own weakness. He hadn’t been able to keep the shield up for as long as he would have liked. But right now he had to prioritize his own recovery over a couple extra deaths.
His power was that big of a difference; if the monster wave would have been any bigger, he would have had to step in for sure.
He, however, still sent Mara and Torg to the front lines to at least try and keep the casualties as low as possible.
