Chapter 107: Chapter 107
Luan woke up with papers scattered all around his bed. He had fallen asleep while still trying to come up with new ways to deal with the waves without relying on his own abilities so he wouldn’t come out this miserable after every wave. And while he did have some ideas, he wasn’t sure how viable they were, but he at least had to try. Stretching his whole body, he felt a lot better.
"A night’s sleep always helps a lot," he muttered as he gathered all the papers scattered everywhere and got out of bed.
Stretching his whole body, it still felt rather sore, but at least now he could walk on his own, and if push comes to shove, he could even fight a little.
Leaving his room, he made his way toward the cafeteria to eat his breakfast and hopefully find all the division leaders as well so he could start discussing strategies while he still wasn’t fully healed.
When he arrived at the cafeteria, everyone inside bowed slightly and heaved a collective sigh of relief seeing the general walking once more.
Luan grabbed a tray with food and went straight toward the table where all the leaders were eating, with wide eyes while staring at him.
Luan awkwardly scratched his cheek and took a seat between Amalia and Raymond. "Don’t worry, it’s a lot better already," Luan reassured them as he placed his tray and all the papers in front of him.
"Now, onto a more important topic, I tried to come up with some new strategies we could implement," he stated while shoving a small stack of papers to everyone.
"Read through it carefully and tell me what you think. I don’t want yes-men. If you think it’s trash, tell me straight to my face. And I would also like some fresh ideas," he declared, looking at Dimitri.
Everyone nodded solemnly and started reading through the papers carefully, while Luan started leisurely eating.
Like that, fifteen excruciatingly slow minutes passed where the whole cafeteria was so silent you could hear a pin drop. No one dared to interrupt the leaders, and Luan had given them an important task, so they were fully focused on reading through everything.
Slowly all the normal soldiers started leaving, as they needed to help with dismantling all the meat or continue their own training; they wouldn’t be of help in such an important meeting anyway.
When Amalia finally finished reading through the papers, the whole cafeteria was already empty. She sighed lightly at the soldiers’ timidity, but it made sense.
The general was that kind of person; to the normal soldiers, he was almost like a god flying across the battlefield and wiping out every monster in sight.
"This is very impressive, General, but why did you make so many different tactics?" she asked. She couldn’t grasp why he would do that.
"That is, of course, to account for different sizes of waves and what type of monsters will be inside them. I decided to go for the worst-case scenario. If the next waves are the exact same, so be it; then it’s a bit of wasted planning, but if not and we aren’t prepared, hundreds of lives will be lost," he stated.
Amalia looked with reverence at him; she hadn’t thought about that at all. And that is also why he is the general and not her. "That is very thorough," she replied, once again going over the papers. At first she was just going to agree with everything Luan proposed, but after hearing his reasoning, she threw that idea out the window.
She had to take this seriously; the lives of everyone in the fortress were at stake, and while the general was the leader, he clearly knew that he alone couldn’t come up with hundreds of different tactics, and that’s why he needed their help.
With newfound determination, all the leaders went through the tactics and plans Luan had presented to them once more as the cafeteria fell into silence once more.
Luan nodded with a satisfied expression; it seemed his speech had finally gotten through to them. He had found it strange that Amalia had read through everything that fast. But it seemed like she was planning to just blindly agree with his strategies without even properly checking them.
Like that, time slowly passed as they had a very in-depth discussion about tens of hundreds of different tactics for different monster waves.
Sometimes the discussion turned so heated that at multiple times they almost started physically fighting, but that also showed Luan how passionate these people were and that they genuinely cared about the people in this fortress.
Even the normally timid Raymond was actively suggesting new ideas and adjustments. And like that, they started naming hundreds of tactics so they could quickly and efficiently communicate which one they wanted to use and when.
They even went as far as creating emergency signals and those types of things. Just like that, it had become noon. But there were no signs of the meeting coming to an end anytime soon.
Everyone was highly engaged and taking notes. But then the ground started shaking violently.
"Shit!" Luan cursed loudly. "Get ready, guys, that’s another wave. You all go down and get your men ready. I’ll go up and check the wave and shout the tactic we will be utilizing." Luan ordered as two see-through wings appeared on his back; he rushed straight out of the cafeteria, rushing toward the watchtower.
The other division leaders didn’t hesitate for a second either, all of them rushing down toward their men and barking orders for everyone to gear up and get ready. "Another wave is approaching. Get ready!" Amalia shouted.
Dimitri quickly opened the large doors together with Raymond as they held them open while everyone was rushing out, with bated breath.
They had just survived a wave the previous day. And the general was badly injured. Would they be able to handle this one?
Even the leaders were nervous, even though they had spent hours discussing different ideas; those were, after all, only ideas, and it was uncertain if they could properly implement them. Or worse, if those plans even worked.
