Chapter 106: Chapter 106
Raymond finally felt a bit better after seeing all the people in the fortress doing their best to survive; even the common people and the children were doing their part.
Together with Dimitri, they left the place where the children were still running around causing a ruckus, and they went back to the training ground, where this time the knights and mages were seriously training.
With all the available healers on standby to treat anyone that got injured. Amalia and the other leaders are carefully overseeing the sparring matches.
"It seems your outburst had an effect. Good job, Ray," Dimitri teasingly said, poking Raymond’s sides.
Whose ears flushed red? Just thinking about that episode of his made him embarrassed, but it did feel really good to get it off his chest.
"Let’s just hope the general’s condition improves before the next wave, or we will need to become a lot stronger," he solemnly replied, staring at the knights and mages sparring.
Dimitri nodded. Raymond was right; if not for the general, they wouldn’t have even survived that first wave. "Let’s hope they don’t happen too frequently," he muttered.
Together they made their way toward the other leaders, who were intensely instructing the sparring people and constantly nitpicking their every move. They had to do better than that, or they would die.
"Oh, Ray and Dimitri, huh? So how was it?" Amalia inquired when she saw the two return.
Raymond awkwardly scratched his cheek. "Good, I’m feeling a lot better now, thanks."
Dimitri slapped him on the back a couple times with a smile on his face, and Amalia nodded as well and went right back to barking orders to the mages. They all had too little mana, so the only way to quickly increase it was to completely empty your own mana reserve and lose consciousness.
"Come on! Faster, guys, we never know when the next battle will happen; we don’t have time to be relaxed," she shouted while glaring at all the mages.
After they heard her, they all started rapidly chanting spells to empty their mana reserves as fast as possible as one after the other, mages fell unconsciously to the ground.
Dimitri and Raymond chuckled at one another, and Dimitri made his way toward his knight division to instruct them rigorously as well.
While Raymond went to check on the general once more. Even though the general had ordered him to leave, he couldn’t shake the feeling that his injuries might be worse than he’s letting on.
Quickly making his way back up to Luan’s room, he knocked a couple of times. "General, are you ok?" he asked through the closed door.
Luan had woken up a couple of hours ago but was still too weak to do anything, so he made Vira grab some papers and started doing paperwork and coming up with new strategies while weakly lying in bed.
He glanced at the door with a smile after he heard Raymond return a couple of hours later. "You may enter," he stated, not looking up from the papers while Raymond entered the room nervously.
"So Ray, did you do what I told you to?" he said, scribbling things on the paper in front of him.
Raymond nodded, "Yes, I helped people and even took a tour of the fortress with Dimitri. Because I was stationed at the infirmary all the time, I never knew there were so many people, even ordinary people, that were so hopeful," he said, staring at the ground.
"Good, do you see it now? Don’t just throw away your life. If I have to sacrifice myself for you all, I’ll gladly do it," Luan resolutely stated, putting down the paper and looking straight into Raymond’s eyes.
He gulped after hearing the general’s words. How was it possible for someone to be so noble? He had no idea, but the general was the best role model he could have ever asked for.
"Understood, sir! But I will never let that happen!" Raymond declared, staring right back into Luan’s eyes.
Luan nodded a couple of times, very satisfied with Raymond’s reply. "Good, now could you please start the treatment once more? After a couple of hours of rest, it improved considerably, but it’s still pretty bad," he said.
Raymond didn’t hesitate a second, taking a seat next to Luan’s bed as he started chanting his healing spells and, fully focused, started Luan’s treatment once more.
An hour later it was done, and Raymond left the room covered in sweat. Doing something like that multiple times a day took a serious toll on his body, but he didn’t care. As he weakly wobbled through the hall and went back to the infirmary to sleep, he had a satisfied grin on his face.
"I’ll need to work even harder and improve my healing techniques!" he swore to himself while he collapsed onto his bed.
Luan, on the other hand, sat in his bed, replaying the whole battle inside his mind.
"What could I have done differently? This style is not sustainable currently, so I’ll have to come up with an alternative way to fight those waves off," he muttered.
Glancing at all the papers in front of him, he had been trying to come up with new, more sustainable strategies the whole day, but not knowing the size and what type of monsters would be attacking was a huge detriment.
He could use the first wave as data, but only making a strategy for that one would be stupid, as he didn’t know if the next wave would be the same or totally different.
If they would be the same and he was overthinking it, so be it. It’s better to be overprepared than get caught off guard because you only prepared for a single wave.
He couldn’t afford to be careless; this simulated world was a great opportunity to test his abilities with no risk of death, and he could experiment with all kinds of formations because these people weren’t real anyway.
Still, it was rather uncomfortable to see people get shredded to pieces in front of him, and he really did want to clear the objective of clearing all the monster tides.
