Chapter 105: Chapter 105
"Please calm down, Ray," Amalia said, looking around for anything that could help calm him down.
That was when Dimitri stepped forward and gave him a fierce hug. "I understand your pain, Ray. Follow me; I’ll show you something," he softly said.
Sniffling, Raymond stopped crying and looked around a little embarrassedly, bowing toward Amalia and the other leaders. "Sorry," he said, barely audible.
But no one blamed him; they felt the same; they wanted to be hopeful and believe everything would be fine. But with Raymond’s outburst, something shifted in their heads.
And Amalia and the other leaders turned around while Dimitri and Raymond left the training area. Looking back one last time, Raymond saw something shocking: they were actually sparring instead of aimlessly swinging around swords and spears.
And like that, Raymond and Dimitri left the training grounds. "Great job, Ray; someone had to do it. And sadly I wasn’t brave enough," Dimitri explained, looking at the ground while guiding Raymond through the civilian areas of the fortress.
First they went through the rooms where the women were knitting and making clothes, and Dimitri stopped him.
"You see this," he said, pointing at all the women diligently working.
Raymond nodded, taking in the sight in front of him. As a healer, he had always been too busy to actually go through the fortress and check the other areas out. Normally he was stationed at the infirmary twenty-four seven.
"I get what you mean, but does this look like they are hopeless or are just waiting for death?" Dimitri inquired.
He shook his head at Dimitri’s question, "Absolutely not. To me it looks more like they actually believe in the general."
"That’s right, and this is all thanks mostly, of course, to the general, but also to everyone else that is desperately fighting for survival," Dimitri said, with a smile on his face.
Looking around once more, Raymond even saw some of them singing songs while working, even though they didn’t have anything to be happy about. They looked rather satisfied with their lives, even if it was fake.
"But how can they be so optimistic?" he asked, raising an eyebrow as dying screams kept echoing through his mind. Of the people that were mutilated by the monsters or, worse, the soldiers, he couldn’t save because of his own incompetence.
"For one that doesn’t really see the battles happening outside, so unlike us, they don’t know how dire the situation is. As for another reason, follow me," Dimitri said, dragging Raymond along.
They quickly went past all the women and arrived at a small field with trees, small animals, and children running around everywhere.
Raymond’s eyes widened. Children, those that would pioneer the future, were playing here without a care in the world.
Their childish smiles melting away all the pessimism and negativity that he had harbored.
"Amazing, right? It’s all because of those little brats that the general and everyone else are fighting so hard. Even if the situation is so terrible," Dimitri said as he walked toward some of the children.
When they saw Dimitri, they stopped running after each other and all swarmed him.
"Uncle, Uncle, tell us about the outside world," one of them enthusiastically shouted, practically jumping into his embrace.
Dimitri caught him with ease, spinning around a couple of times, and placed him on the ground. Then he took a seat as all the children sat down immediately in front of him.
"Hoho, alright. But I have to warn you, it gets scary," Dimitri said.
But all the children just looked at him with sparkling eyes. "Tell me!" They all shouted in unison, rocking their hands back and forth.
"So just yesterday we got attacked by a big wave of scary monsters," he started, glancing at Raymond, who still stood there in a daze.
"But luckily the general had formed a river around the fortress, helping all the soldiers defend against the monsters. But then suddenly he felt that something was wrong, and without any hesitation he charged straight into the monster wave," Dimitri said, making over-the-top movements with his hands.
"And while charging, he sliced hundreds of monsters in half, helping his troops immensely, and after taking down the wave’s leader, he quickly returned after finding the soldiers in trouble. And then, without hesitation, he summoned a massive tornado like so." Grabbing some leaves from the ground, Dimitri made a miniature tornado with wind magic and let it spin around the children.
All of them were fully focused on this epic story, but when they saw the mini tornado, they all erupted in cheers.
Snapping Raymond out of his daze, he then also sat down as he kept listening intently to Dimitri explaining the battle to all those children.
"And with this giant tornado, the general swooped all the monsters away, giving me and the other soldiers an opportunity to attack the leftover monsters. And this strong uncle charged straight in, killing monster after monster. And just like that, we beat the massive wave of monsters and even took with us their me..." Dimitri stopped himself there, looking at all the children’s expectant eyes as Luan’s words echoed through his mind.
Should he tell them about the meat? But what about the sacred doctrine? Even though the church was gone, that didn’t mean Nylar was gone. He would most definitely go to hell if he ate it or fed it to small children.
But looking at them, he noticed that they were all rather skinny, like they didn’t get enough nutrients.
One of the children sitting close to Dimitri grabbed his pants. "Took what with you?" he innocently asked.
"Ah, their meat, of course. So tonight will be a massive feast, and for the next couple of weeks there will be tons of meat to eat," he said. He couldn’t take away these children’s future just for his religion.
He himself wouldn’t eat it, but like Luan said, that doesn’t mean these small children should be subjected to the same. With a sigh, a smile appeared on his face.
’The general has it tough, huh, always on the frontlines and dealing with constant unhappy people,’ he thought, awkwardly rubbing his hair. While all the children were running around like headless chickens reenacting what they had just heard and chanting "Meat! Meat!"
It was pure chaos, but for once he didn’t mind. It actually was rather comforting in this dire situation.
