Chapter 104: Chapter 104

A couple of hours later everyone was finally back inside the fortress, and while Luan was slowly healing, everyone else that wasn’t injured was busy.

Some people were dismantling monsters while all the blacksmiths were making spears, shields, and gear from all the new materials.

Raymond sat next to Luan, who was lying on his bed. With a worried look on his face, he kept chanting healing spells to try and make his condition improve even a little faster.

Luan opened one of his eyes and saw Raymond seated on a chair next to his bed, his complexion super pale as sweat dripped down his forehead.

"Calm down, Ray," Luan weakly said. It seemed like the situation was more desperate than he had initially anticipated if he wanted to heal him even at the cost of his own health.

"But general, if another wave like that were to happen while you are out, the whole fortress would get destroyed. My life is nothing compared to yours." He resolutely declared as he stretched the remaining mana in his body to the limit to keep healing Luan.

Luan lay there on his bed, glancing at Raymond, and then he snapped his finger weakly, dropping a whole bucket of water on his head.

"Pull yourself together, Ray; we need everyone here. Now leave and go help the others. I’m feeling much better already!" Luan ordered, slowly pushing himself upright, resting his back against the wall.

Raymond, now drenched, looked in disbelief at the general, but that water had snapped him out of it, and he sheepishly quickly left the room.

After he closed the door, however, Luan winced in pain as he fell back onto the bed. "Shit! It’s worse than I expected," he grumbled; he had acted tough to get Raymond to relax and not risk his own life, but his condition was very severe.

He had pushed his body physically and mentally to the limit, utilizing every last bit of spirit power and even overusing it. Luckily it was a relatively easy wave, but if the first wave was already like that, what would the next ones be like?

He didn’t dare to imagine it, silently praying that the next wave wouldn’t come too soon, and he fell asleep again. Raymond’s healing was very effective, and he felt the effects almost immediately.

Meanwhile, Raymond sat outside the door with his back and ears pressed against it; he knew it. The general was acting tough, but he also had a point: if the best healer died just like that, they would also be in big trouble.

He slowly stood up and wandered through the fortress, aimlessly looking for anything that could brighten this awful day.

He went through the whole fortress, from the cafeteria to the infirmary and even the smithies. But everywhere the atmosphere was somber. They were all hard at work because Luan had ordered it, but it looked like they had no hope left.

As if it didn’t matter anymore if they worked properly or not. Raymond felt the same way; with the general in that condition, if even a small beast tide were to happen, they would all die gruesome deaths.

But still he felt they needed to at least try to honor the general’s sacrifice; if they had been stronger, the general also wouldn’t have ended up in that terrible condition either.

Gritting his teeth, he stepped onto the training field, where he saw all the other division leaders and their squads doing some half-assed training.

"Come on, guys. The general didn’t overexert himself just for you all to throw away your lives," he sternly said, marching straight toward them.

Amalia and Dimitri glanced at the one that dared to lecture them, but when they saw it was Raymond, their somber expressions had a flicker of hope on them.

"Ray, how’s the general?" Dimitri cautiously inquired, with bated breath.

When the others heard that, they all stopped what they were doing, and all together they focused on Raymond.

"He’s gradually improving, so please don’t waste this opportunity that he has given us!" he shouted, the desperation evident in his voice.

"But Ray, what will it matter? Maybe the general will be able to recover before next time, but what about the time after that or the one after that? Unless something drastically changes, I don’t think anything we do will make any difference at all," Amalia said, clenching her fists so tightly that her knuckles turned white.

Everyone around her doing the same, turning away from Raymond, all with somber expressions. As if death was certain, but only when it would happen wasn’t decided yet.

Raymond’s eyes went wide; it seemed he wasn’t the only one that thought like that. Was this the reason Luan had sent him out?

He had no idea, but he hated it, this feeling of powerlessness that they were just sitting ducks with a single guardian and hundreds of thousands of hungry wolves constantly barraging that guardian.

"So what!" he shouted, glaring at Amalia.

When she heard his answer, her eyes widened, and she was just about to say something before Raymond completely cut her off.

"Do you think the general wants this? If it weren’t for us, he could have easily left behind this godforsaken place. But he’s staying to grant us a future. So how dare you all just give up like this after he almost died fighting for your lives!" All his frustrations from weeks of this terrible lifestyle suddenly burst open, and he completely let himself go.

Everyone was wide-eyed as they stared at the shouting Raymond, who was lecturing them.

"You think I don’t feel like shit that I can’t even heal the general properly, even if healing is the only thing I’m good at! Of course not. I absolutely hate this feeling. But that doesn’t mean I’ll just give up!" He continued as tears started streaming down his face.

"Also, we are not the only ones here. Think about all the children and the civilians. What will they think if they see these weak excuses for training sessions being held day in and day out!"

Amalia and Dimitri were shaken to their cores. Their eyes slowly regained their lost luster as they stared at Raymond, whose face was bright red with tears streaming down it.
