Chapter 117: Different

Chapter 117: Different

The next morning, I woke up to the sounds of Morgan’s sobbing.

What is happening? Why is she wailing like the world ended?

I quickly got out of bed and put on a robe to leave my room. The crying was coming from the living room, so I hurried my steps and walked over in that direction.

As I got closer, I could make out some of the words.

"Mom! Is he okay? Tell me, I need to go see him!"

Morgan was hysterical, but my heart sank. There was only one person she could be so emotional over, and that was Christian.

I practically ran into the room and looked at Morgan standing across from my mother.

"What happened?" I asked, unable to hide my anxiety.

Morgan looked at me with her tear-streaked face, "He almost died! They found him in a ditch!"

"No, no!" My mother yelled over her, turning to look at me. "Earlier this morning, we received a call that Christian had gotten into a car accident last night. Apparently, he had too much to drink last night and drove off the highway when he drove home last night."

I felt my body go cold.

None of this made sense. Christian barely drank at all yesterday, and it was at the end of the evening that he went missing.

"Didn’t he come here with a driver? When he picked us up, there was a driver," I stated, not buying the story.

"Apparently, that driver had a family emergency, and Christian let him go early, thinking he’d be fine to drive himself," my mother answered.

"How is Christian? You said he’s in the hospital, is he in any danger?" I asked with urgency. The facts behind the accident could be investigated later. What was important now was that he was okay.

"He’s stable. I was just about to suggest visiting him at the hospital, but I can’t have your sister wailing like this in public."

"Please, Mother! Please, let’s go. I beg of you!" Morgan came over, dropping to her knees.

I was ready to kneel beside her, but I knew that would look odd.

"Please, Mother. He’s a good employer and I wish to bring him flowers," I said, doing my best not to seem overly enthusiastic.

She finally nodded, "Very well. Go get ready, I’ll let the driver know."

Thirty minutes later, we arrived at the hospital just in time for visiting hours. Morgan looked like a nervous wreck, and I wasn’t much better.

"Hello, we’re here to visit Christian Vittoria," my mother said at the check-in counter.

The nurse at the counter looked him up and nodded, "He’s on the fourth floor, room 402."

We made our way up to the fourth floor, where all of the VIP wards were. Everything was clean and quiet, with only the occasional sound of medical equipment coming through the rooms.

The moment we entered Christian’s ward, I noticed that the doctor was doing a few checkups.

Wait, isn’t this one of Christian’s friends? Is he a doctor here?

"Hello, Doctor! I hope we’re not interrupting anything? My daughter couldn’t sit still and begged me to visit her fiancé," my mother said, walking in first.

The doctor, whom I believe was named Liam, turned to look at us with a smile. "Please, come on in. I was just finishing up. Don’t mind me, I’m just going to record a few vitals over there."

He walked over to where the small counter was that held his computer and began to type. Morgan rushed over to the side of Christian’s bed, placing her hands on his.

"I was so worried! I prayed all morning when I heard that you had an accident!" she said, pretending to wipe away tears from her eyes.

Christian looked at her with a very neutral expression, without showing much emotion. I was glad to see that his face looked unharmed and there were only a few bruises visible on his arms.

"I’m sorry for making you worry. Everything is okay now," he replied, trying to smile.

Something doesn’t seem right. He’s not acting like his usual self.

The entire time I stood quietly behind Morgan, waiting for him to look at me, he only paid attention to Morgan.

Did I do something wrong? Is he upset with me?

My mind whirled with possibilities of what could have happened. I replayed everything that happened at the auction event, but couldn’t come up with a reason for him to be upset.

Morgan continued to chat with him, telling him about the earrings she won from the auction event. I waited desperately for him to acknowledge my existence.

"Morgan, come. The flowers arrived, help me bring them up." My mother pulled Morgan away to prevent Christian from getting a headache from her nonstop talking.

Once they both left the room, only Christian, the doctor, and I were left.

I walked over to Christian’s side, dying to see how he was, but as soon as my hand touched his arm, he pulled away from me, looking at me with cold eyes.

"Second Miss, please be mindful of your actions. You’re an engaged woman."

His words were like a bucket of cold water. I looked at him, ready to cry.

"Christian, what do you mean? Did I do something wrong?" I asked. My hands were shaking from fright. My worst nightmare was coming true, one where I no longer mattered to him.

"Are we so familiar?" he asked, frowning.

It was then that I noticed the distance in his eyes as he looked at me. It was as if we had first met. A cold, frightening distance with only the slightest tinge of curiosity.

"What happened?" I asked in a barely audible whisper.

No. No, I refuse to believe this.

Just as I felt like I was going to have a panic attack, the doctor walked over. "Second Miss, may I speak with you outside for a moment?"

I nodded, hoping to hear that this was all some grand plot that I was not aware of. I followed him outside and into a small office where we could speak in private.

"It seems like your mother didn’t tell you. Christian lost his memory. He only just remembered being engaged to your sister. While he’s aware that he is experiencing memory loss, it’s not recommended that we fill him in on all of the details, such as your relationship with him.

If we force him to remember, it might have detrimental effects on his brain. I have faith that his memory will return, so please be patient and understanding."

Tears began rolling down my face.

He doesn’t remember me...
