Chapter 118: A New Kind of Pain

Chapter 118: A New Kind of Pain

Liam looked at me with a heavy sigh. "I know this is hard for you, but please understand that he’s going through a lot right now, and any additional thing could potentially break him."

I wiped the tears that were still rolling down my cheeks with my hands and nodded. Christian’s health was more important than anything else...even our relationship.

"Do you think he will get his memories back?" I asked after a long moment of silence.

Liam frowned, "This is something I can’t be sure of. As much as I want to say that he will, it just depends on him and how he recovers."

At least there’s a chance.

Before Liam walked out, I asked him one final question, one that’s not been sitting well with me.

"Doctor, this wasn’t a car accident, right?" I asked, looking straight into his eyes. "I’m asking you this as not just his doctor, but as his friend."

Liam paused, looking over at me for a good minute before answering.

"I’m not sure. But I find it very hard to believe that Christian got drunk and was stupid enough to drive home in that state. I’ve known him for many years, and although he occasionally drinks, it’s never to the point of full intoxication."

I nodded, this was what I observed while with him as well. "He hardly drank all night at the auction event. I was with him up until the very end."

"Can you tell me what happened? Anything you add can help us paint a better picture of what happened that night," asked Liam. He looked very determined to get to the bottom of Christian’s accident.

"I’m not sure if you know, but I’m formally engaged to Karl Farina. He works closely with my father, but just one look can tell you that he’s not a good person. Since you are aware of my relationship with Christian, Christian didn’t want him to touch me and fed him drink after drink all night until he blacked out."

I averted my gaze, feeling slightly guilty about admitting that we did that to someone.

"Everything was fine until the auction event was over. Suddenly, a man whom I didn’t recognize came in looking for Karl, stating that there was an emergency. I overheard them mention something about sedatives and shared that information with Christian, which made him follow both men to check it out."

I sighed, "At least I think that’s where he went. Christian told me to wait for him in our booth, so I did. I wish I followed him..."

Liam’s eyes widened slightly before turning cold. He listened to my words very carefully.

"Thank you for this information, Leslie. I believe this will help us figure out what actually happened last night. Come, let’s return to the ward before your mother and sister return."

I wiped my eyes one last time before following Liam back into Christian’s ward.

"Wait here, I need to check in on another patient. It’ll be quick," said Liam, and turned to leave the room.

I stood awkwardly inside the room. This moment of alone time together used to be filled with passion, but now it was cold and suffocating.

Unsure of how I should face Christian, I simply tried my best to minimize my presence, but that was a lot harder to do when it was just us in the room.

Christian must have felt the awkwardness because after a minute of silence, he finally spoke.

"I’m sure Liam informed you of my memory loss. Forgive me if I’ve forgotten something, but as my fiancée’s sister, don’t feel too awkward around me. Feel free to take a seat."

He motioned to the chair in the corner of the room with his eyes.

Being seen as nothing more than his fiancée’s sister stabbed me straight in the heart. It was a new kind of pain that I never knew existed. I averted my gaze, keeping my eyes lowered to prevent myself from bursting into tears.

Even without looking up, I could feel his cold, piercing gaze on me. It was similar to the one he gave me the day we met at his house. One that made me feel frightened.

These few minutes of silence were the most difficult ones I’ve ever experienced. There was nothing to talk about, and I was scared to even look up at him.

The entire time, I prayed that he would remember me. I was determined to get to the bottom of what happened.

"Who exactly are you to me?"

Christian’s sudden question caused me to freeze. I finally looked up at him, making eye contact with him. My heart was beating wildly. Every part of me wanted to tell him, tell him everything from how we met to his promise to me just last night.

Liam’s words echoed in my mind, causing me to hesitate to say anything.

What if he doesn’t believe me? What if he thinks I’m simply trying to get something from him?

Even if I did tell him about our secret relationship, without the feelings, my words would remain empty. It’s impossible to convince a person who doesn’t know you that they’re in love with you.

Was Christian ever in love with me? He never told me he loved me, although his actions all pointed to it.

My thoughts began to spiral. I looked at him but couldn’t answer.

He continued to stare at me, studying my face with his cold and distant eyes. I opened and closed my mouth a few times, torn on how to answer him.

"I...I’m..."

The door swung open, and Morgan ran in carrying a massive bouquet of roses.

"Do you like them? I remember you told me that you liked the roses from our garden. I had the groundskeepers bring me some."

Christian pulled his gaze away from me and looked at the flowers. He looked at them for a while before nodding, "Yes, I do like these. Thank you very much."

"Come on, ladies, wish Christian a full recovery, and let’s go. He needs to rest. We will come visit him again." My mother walked over to Christian’s bedside and smiled.

"Thank you for coming this way to visit me, Madame Moresi. It was lovely to see you all," said Christian, looking at all three of us.

Morgan blushed and walked over to place her hands on his. "Get better soon, I’ll be thinking about you."

Christian gave Morgan a slight nod and watched as Mother pulled her out of the room.

"Come, Leslie, don’t lag behind!" she ordered and walked out.

I stood up from the chair and glanced one final time at Christian, meeting his cold, dark eyes. It felt as if my heart was being stabbed by a thousand needles, and there was nothing I could do about it.

I managed to flash him a small smile, unable to hide the pain I was feeling. He looked back at me with an unreadable expression, only giving me a curt nod.

My eyes began to water. Never in my life have I experienced such an intense pain.
