Chapter 116: Anxiety
Chapter 116: Anxiety
I waited in the booth for over twenty minutes when I heard the door open. The entire time I was in the room, I felt restless, like something bad was going to happen.
The last thing that Christian said was that he would be right back, but nearly half an hour went by and there was still no sign of him.
"Where is everyone?" Morgan asked, looking around the empty booth. She was wearing the earrings she had won with a smug expression.
"Someone came by to get Karl, and Christian said that he was going to step out for a moment. It seemed urgent..." I replied.
My anxiety only got worse after saying everything out loud. I looked at Morgan, hoping that she would insist on going to find Christian, but instead, she walked over to the couch and sat down.
"Oh, in that case, I’ll just wait here. Maybe he secretly bid on an item for me and wants to surprise me!"
Morgan’s words blew past me. A part of me hoped that her scenario was true.
I continued to turn my head, looking towards the door behind me, waiting for Christian to return.
-
The concert finished two hours later, and everyone was either going to retrieve their purchased items or heading home. At this point, I knew something was wrong. It wasn’t like Christian to simply leave without saying anything.
Karl also didn’t come back for the entire night, raising my suspicions even more.
"You said he was going to come right back. Why isn’t here here?" Morgan questioned, pouting. "I wanted to show him my earrings."
"I..I don’t know. I think something may have happened, it’s unlike him to just leave you like this," I said, spinning the story to her favor. "Maybe we should look for him?"
Morgan touched her earring and nodded, "Fine, let’s go take a look. Maybe he got caught up in business talk somewhere."
I felt grateful that she agreed and hurried over to the door, but as soon as I opened it, I found my mother standing on the other side.
"Come on, ladies, we’re going home," she said calmly.
"Mother, I wanted to show Christian my earrings. Do you know where he is? It’ll only take a minute," said Morgan.
I also looked up at her, hoping that she would know where he was. "I think he’s with your father. Your father asked me to take you all home. He’s going to oversee the rest of the closing events here."
For some reason, her words didn’t bring me a sense of relief. I couldn’t shake the gut feeling that something was wrong.
"I think Morgan should at least get to say goodnight to Christian. Karl is also missing." I hated even to bring up Karl, but I was desperate.
"Karl is also with your father, don’t worry," she replied and looked at Morgan, "Christian will come visit you later. Come, the car is waiting for us out front."
We followed our mother out of the building to the car. The entire walk out, I kept scanning the surroundings to see if I could find any signs of Christian.
"What are you looking around for? You look like you lost something," asked Morgan.
I fixed my expression, "I’m only getting one final look at this place. It’s rare that we get to come here," I explained, pretending to enjoy the scenery.
"Don’t worry, you can come here all you want when you become the Madam of the Moresi family after you marry Karl," she smirked.
Normally, her comments would make me angry, but right now, all I could think about was Christian. Something inside of me was screaming that something was wrong.
"Leslie! Quit dawdling and hurry up! We’re all waiting on you!" my mother said, scolding me from inside the limousine.
Please be okay.
I glanced at the majestic auction house one more time before getting into the car. The entire ride home, I felt like throwing up from the nonstop anxiety; even my hands were shaking.
Noticing my pale face, my mother frowned, "What’s wrong with you? You look horrible."
I shook my head, unsure of how to respond. I couldn’t simply tell her that I had a gut feeling that something was wrong with Christian.
I wish I had his number. I’ll try to contact Blake tomorrow and see if everything is okay...
"She probably ate too many of the snacks at the event. I even noticed her drinking the champagne!" Morgan said in a very telling way.
"Leslie! Do I need to put you back on a diet? How many times have I told you to be mindful of what you’re eating?! I’ll send a doctor over later, go back to your room."
I wasn’t in the mood to argue and turned to go straight to my room. Now the only thing was to figure out how to contact Blake.
Today was Friday, the start of the weekend, so I didn’t have a reason to show up at the office to speak with him. I also knew that as soon as I called or texted him, my father would know and question me.
Maybe tomorrow I could convince Morgan to go out and see him.
Frustrated, I lay on my bed until the doctor arrived.
-
"Excuse me, Miss, I was sent over to check in on you. I heard you were feeling unwell," he said as he stood outside my door.
"Come in," I shouted from my bed, sitting up to greet him.
Our family doctor was a nice older man who had worked for our family for generations. Anytime I got sick or injured in the past, he always came by to help me out.
He entered my room carrying his doctor’s bag. The grey beard I was used to seeing had turned pure white, giving away his old age.
"Dr. Gio, thank you for coming," I smiled.
He nodded, but his eyes were already scanning me from afar. "Your mother mentioned that you ate too much and have a stomach ache, but from what I can see, that’s not the case."
I shook my head, "No, in fact, I hardly ate anything at the event. For some reason, I’m feeling very anxious, as if something bad is about to happen."
He stroked his beard and looked into my eyes. "Child, matters of the mind and things like anxiety are difficult to treat. Usually, these feelings pass on their own, but if it gets really bad, I can prescribe you some medicine to help alleviate the symptoms."
I nodded, understanding that it wasn’t as simple as putting a bandage over a cut.
"Rest easy, drink water, and maybe try doing something relaxing, like taking a bath. I’ll tell your mother that you were suffering from malnutrition, so that she doesn’t starve you again. I still don’t understand why she does that."
"Thank you, Doctor." I gave him a weak smile, feeling grateful that he would at least try to prevent me from being starved.
"Okay, rest now. I’ll send the medicine over. Take it only if the feeling doesn’t go away. It’s best to let it pass naturally." After saying his piece, he left my room, leaving me alone once more.
I followed his advice and took a nice, relaxing bubble bath with lavender aromatherapy. The smell and warmth of the water helped ease my anxiety a good amount, but didn’t get rid of it completely.
