Scarlet Descent
Ch. 91 - The Captain's Order

“He seems to be in a bad mood…”

Wei Wei noticed his state didn’t align with the rest of the team, so he adjusted his expression to show concern. He turned to Captain Ouyang: “Captain, is there something wrong with what I said?”
“You care about the progress of our work; there’s nothing wrong with that…”
Captain Ouyang remained silent for a long time before glancing at the oil painting of the bathing girl on the table. Seeing she was still sitting obediently in the bathtub, he sighed and turned to Wei Wei: “Little Wei, did you return to Scrap Iron City with a mission?”
This question was asked casually but seemed to carry significant weight.
Wei Wei shook his head: “Captain, I applied to come back on my own.”
“Really?”
Captain Ouyang asked again, his eyes fixed on Wei Wei.
“Really,” Wei Wei replied, nodding calmly and meeting Captain Ouyang’s gaze without flinching.
The others in the room also looked at Wei Wei with serious expressions. Since his arrival in Scrap Iron City, his background—his training camp identity, his suspiciously fake documents, his mysterious strength, and his tendency to lose control with “command execution”—had made everyone wonder if he had ulterior motives. His unique decorating and task execution styles were also topics of discussion. It was as if he was crazy. Previously, everyone had just speculated, but now the question was out in the open.
Wei Wei’s candid response didn’t arouse suspicion, but it made things even more peculiar. His background and the chaos he had caused made it hard to believe he had returned purely for work... or perhaps out of interest?
“I believe you,” Captain Ouyang said after a long pause, his voice low as he sighed. “But we initially came to Scrap Iron City with a mission.”
Wei Wei looked at Captain Ouyang in surprise. Captain Ouyang’s face showed a hint of embarrassment. The others also seemed awkward, having just asked if Wei Wei had a mission and now revealing their own.
Captain Ouyang shrugged, adopting a carefree attitude: “Little Wei, actually...”
“I know,” Wei Wei interrupted with a smile. “I’m just surprised you’re telling me this.”
“Hmm?”
The others focused on him again.
Wei Wei continued: “The former White Ghost Knights, with mysterious training backgrounds, were active in the Black Sea area. They contributed greatly to the Wandering Church’s pioneering efforts in the wilderness and exploring demon territories. They once had the chance to be recognized by the Church and become a regular military order of the Wandering Church. However, they accepted a mysterious mission, left the Wandering Church, and were recruited by the Foundation to become peacekeepers in Scrap Iron City.”
Wei Wei chuckled: “Before being recruited, they even managed to swindle a batch of support from the Wandering Church.”
“Stop it…”
Captain Ouyang raised his hand, looking a bit guilty: “Does the Foundation know everything?”
“You misunderstand, Captain,” Wei Wei replied. “I’m not from the Foundation; I’m from the training camp.”
“This means...”
“Your secret isn’t even a secret. The confidentiality level of your information is very low.”
The atmosphere became awkward. Captain Ouyang waved his hand: “We didn’t intentionally hide it.” But this revelation dispelled the earlier mystery and tension. He sighed: “In short, we initially came here with a mission to find something. Not just us; many powerful individuals in Scrap Iron City are also searching for it. It’s so mysterious that no one can find any leads.”
“Now, we’ve changed our minds. We don’t want to fight anymore. It’s nice to retire in a small place like this.”
“However, who would have thought that just when we gave up, this thing suddenly appeared right before our eyes? Three years ago, we didn’t even know if it existed.”
He spoke with a mix of regret and resignation: “We didn’t make any effort in this area... But now, we’re just one step away from locating it.”
Wei Wei quickly grasped the subtle psychological shift in Captain Ouyang and the others. Perhaps when they first entered Scrap Iron City, they had intended to secretly complete a Wandering Church mission while pretending to accept the Foundation’s recruitment. They might have tried or genuinely given up, but who could have predicted that progress would be made just when they decided to retire?
“Maybe this is just fate playing tricks on us,” Wei Wei thought to himself.
The others looked at him with odd expressions: “This isn’t fate; it’s you causing trouble.”
Reflecting on the past three years, they hadn’t been entirely uninvolved. However, it was only after Wei Wei returned that many clues surfaced. The peripheral hunters, the Blood and Flesh Rose sacrificial sites, the chosen lambs, and the determination of several locations—except for the Origin Book, almost everything was discovered by this newcomer. And even the Origin Book was bought by him without asking the team for reimbursement!
In the midst of this awkward and heavy atmosphere, Wei Wei forced a smile and asked softly: “So, what do you plan to do, Captain?”
Regardless of whether it was Uncle Yuan’s mention of its impact on the Second Secret War or Captain Ouyang’s hint about it holding the secret to subduing demonic powers, the Divine Bell of the Gods was clearly important. Now that they were so close, if Captain Ouyang and his team could seize it and hand it over to the Wandering Church, who knew what blessings they might receive? Perhaps it would be unparalleled glory and power? After all, despite being nomadic, the Wandering Church held a godlike status in the wilderness.
Captain Ouyang faced Wei Wei’s inquiring gaze, and the attention of the others focused on him. Then, he said: “We’re dropping it.”
“Ah?”
Wei Wei was surprised, staring blankly at Captain Ouyang. Not just him; the other team members also looked puzzled, their eyes on Captain Ouyang.
“I know you’ve always doubted my intentions,” Captain Ouyang said, suddenly appearing relaxed. He looked at the team members and smiled: “Even if I repeatedly assured you that I’ve given up on this thing, you still didn’t quite believe me. But now, I can make a decision in front of you: to hell with the divine legacy, to hell with the Divine Bell of the Gods! It’s none of our business anymore.”
“Now that we’ve found concrete leads confirming the existence of this Blood and Flesh Seal, perhaps after interrogating a few more people, we can even find the true location of the sealed object. So... we’re going to stop right here!”
He turned sharply to Lin Feng Jiao: “You immediately compile all the leads and guesses into a report and send it to headquarters. Let them handle it however they want. Also, notify them to come and take custody of the peripheral hunters we caught last night. We absolutely won’t interrogate them anymore... The more secrets we hold, the faster we die!”
Captain Ouyang scanned the room: “Whether it’s the rank of the Divine Bell of the Gods, the mysterious organization that can seal it, or those malicious individuals hiding in Scrap Iron City, not to mention the Seventh Clergy who are now hiding somewhere, these forces are involved in a vortex that’s far beyond our ability to resolve.”
“I won’t let my team members go to their deaths.”
He turned to Wei Wei: “Including you, Little Wei.”
“From now on, stop investigating anything related to this. Never approach it again.”
“This is my order as your captain!”
Wei Wei was taken aback, staring blankly at Captain Ouyang. This was indeed the most difficult order he had ever received. How could he slow down his work when the captain himself was ordering him to do so? He glanced around to see Uncle Gun , Lucky Sister, Lin Fengj Jiao, and even Brother Zhu Zai outside, all looking at him with expressions that seemed to beg him not to push himself too hard...
Wei Wei felt a surge of emotion. The captain and the others were going to such lengths to explain things to him because they didn’t want to lose him. Otherwise, they could have just let him handle the dangerous tasks on his own. This collective warmth moved him, and he nodded gently: “I understand, Captain!”
Captain Ouyang and the others immediately relaxed, their faces filled with relief.
“Quickly...”
They busied themselves: “Lin, prepare the report and send it to headquarters. Make it urgent.”
“Also, prepare a leave application...”
“Lucky, get a helicopter ready, one that can fly out at any moment...” In a distant abandoned city, over three hundred miles from Scrap Iron City, the Seventh Clergy’s leader, dressed in clerical robes and wearing round glasses, stood on the curved roof of a large commercial center. Before him was a massive tree that had burst through the ground, its branches stretching into the air. The tree’s wood was a deep red, resembling human flesh, and it seemed to be moving slightly.
“Scrap Iron City has seen new developments. It seems there’s been a ‘Rainy Night Butcher’,” the Clergy leader said with a smile, tossing a note aside. “It’s getting more lively by the day.”
The tree’s surface moved subtly, its bark forming mouths that opened simultaneously: “Have you made your decision?”
The Seventh Clergy leader chuckled: “They’re always hesitant. But I think Captain Ouyang must have discovered some leads by now and will take action. Unlike me, he didn’t decide to act until now. Of course, I used the simplest method... and perhaps the most reckless one. Destroying a city is a big deal, whether in the wilderness or the spiritual barrier.”
The flesh-like tree spoke: “This could indeed provoke a war between the Wandering Church and the Foundation, or invite the Foundation’s fierce retaliation against our clergy. However, the Church Council has discussed it and believes your plan is worth trying.”
“There’s just one condition: if your abilities aren’t enough to obtain the item, you must destroy it!”
