Scarlet Descent
Ch. 92 - The Ghost Lady

“Captain is actually making a lot of sense…”
Back in the warmth of his home, Wei Wei was still pondering Captain Ouyang’s attitude. It was clear that the captain and the other team members were worried about him, possibly fearing he might object. However, there was no need for such concern. When he first joined the team, he had explained to Ye Feifei that superhuman peacekeepers weren’t real peacekeepers. They were more like half-official investigators because their employer was the Foundation, and they were stationed in various cities to facilitate investigations and provide early warnings to local armed forces when problems arose. Due to the unique nature of many demonic events, these “investigators” had become increasingly capable fighters.
In Wei Wei’s view, Captain Ouyang and his team had already analyzed the cause of the events, understood the nature of the sacrifices, and even found crucial evidence that could help locate the legendary object. They had submitted their investigation report and requested higher-level assistance and issued warnings to their superiors. Essentially, they had fulfilled their duties and responsibilities. After all, even the Foundation discouraged investigators from acting rashly. How could he possibly oppose such a wise decision? Captain Ouyang really didn’t understand him. Back home, Wei Wei hung his Pleasant Goat mask and raincoat on the wall, along with the scythe. These were all items he had bought or personally stolen. Unlike before, he didn’t just throw them away. He then went into the bathroom, took off his clothes, and showered thoroughly. After changing into another identical outfit, he squatted beside the sink to wash his underwear. Sighing, he thought, “It’s a bit stuffy wearing two at once for good luck.” Both pairs needed washing now and couldn’t be worn for a while. Unless he went to Lucky Sister’s place to get another one... or just took one?
“No, no,” Wei Wei shook his head. “How could I do something so perverted?”
He could just spend more time with Ye Feifei instead. At least for now, the effect of the SpongeBob underwear was comparable to that of the goddess.
After soaking his underwear in a basin, Wei Wei returned to the sofa, feeling refreshed. He opened a package of deluxe stir-fried noodles for three people, complete with added eggs, sausages, vegetables, and meat. The aroma made him feel like his pores were opening up, and he sighed contentedly as he enjoyed his meal. No wonder many people became obsessed with love; if love were half as delicious as these noodles, he might have fallen for it too.
While eating, Wei Wei rummaged through his pockets and pulled out the bottle containing the ghost. That night had been a significant gain, as he had verified the ability known as “the gaze of justice.” However, neither Captain Ouyang’s warning nor his own intuition felt that the crimson power had truly been unleashed. So, what would the true application of his third-stage ability be?
As he pondered, Wei Wei opened the bottle with his thumb. The cork flew off, and the room was suddenly swept by a chill wind. A bone-piercing coldness filled the air, and the temperature seemed to drop by tens of degrees. A faint growling sound echoed through the room as the black mist from the bottle swirled into the air, forming a half-transparent cloud that took the shape of a woman with long hair and a noblewoman’s attire. She wore a gray-black, heavy, and ornate gown with a wide-brimmed black hat. Despite her elegant appearance, her limbs were twisted like a giant grasshopper, and she hung upside down from the living room ceiling.
A cold, menacing aura filled the air, like countless knives scraping against the skin of any living being.
“A woman?” Wei Wei was surprised. He was certain this was a particularly ferocious ghost, capable of creating a haunted house or a slaughterhouse, and it must have been responsible for many lives when alive. Yet, he hadn’t expected such a violent ghost to be a woman. Moreover, her attire suggested she wasn’t of low status; similar clothing was only seen in the First Line of Defense.
As Wei Wei thought about this, the ghost hanging from the ceiling seemed to sniff the air deeply, her spiritual energy surging. Her face appeared to show a look of indulgence, seemingly taken aback by the comfort of the blood-red room: “How could there be such a comfortable place?”
However, her consciousness wasn’t complete; it was just an instinctive reaction. She immediately moved towards the only living being in the room, her face twisted in terror and ferocity as she rushed towards Wei Wei.
“Indeed quite fierce…” Wei Wei thought to himself. This was an extreme specimen, the kind that would certainly backfire on its master. No wonder it had been left unsold for so long in the demon trading market.
As he thought, Wei Wei protected his noodles with one hand and quickly drew his scythe with the other, causing fresh blood to flow. The ferocious ghost suddenly changed direction, abandoning her intent to attack Wei Wei. Instead, she sank down and knelt before him, grabbing his hand and beginning to lick his wounds eagerly.
“?”
Wei Wei, who had been ready to slap her, was taken aback by this turn of events. What was happening?
“Even ghosts need to maintain their image…”
He frowned at the ghost, then paused for a moment before covering her head with his hand. The next moment, threads of blood from his palm wound extended out, crawling over her skull and spreading down her body.
The ghost seemed terrified, instinctively retreating rapidly to the middle of the living room, creating a distance of three or four meters from Wei Wei. However, the blood threads remained connected between her and Wei Wei, continuing to penetrate her body. The ghost’s half-transparent face showed a mix of terror and inability to resist. She seemed to want to escape but couldn’t resist the crimson power’s domineering and deadly allure.
Until several minutes had passed, her entire body was covered in the blood threads flowing from Wei Wei’s palm. Her appearance transformed; her gray-black color turned a deep red, still hovering between reality and illusion. Her body was now covered in grotesque bone spurs and strange patterns, floating in the living room and emitting a strong smell of blood.
At this point, she completely gave up struggling and panicking. She floated back to Wei Wei, grasping his hand once more and licking his wounds eagerly.
“Hmm…”
Wei Wei let her continue, using the connection through the blood threads to sense the changes in the ghost’s body. He slowly concluded in his mind: “I can touch ghosts, use blood threads to cover them like I do with weapons, and most importantly, after covering them with blood threads, it’s as if I have another body that I can control freely.”
“This must be the true ability of the crimson power’s third stage…”
“Touching the spirit.”
“It’s actually a form of contact and infection with spiritual power.”
“Though it may not be as effective as listening to fear, it’s more practical and tangible…”
As he thought, Wei Wei raised his hand to tease the ghost, which was staring at his wound with longing eyes. He pointed towards the bathroom, and the ghostly noblewoman was drawn by an invisible force, floating quickly towards the bathroom. However, as she moved, the connection between her and Wei Wei through the blood threads weakened. The limit was about twenty meters; beyond that, the threads would break. When she passed through the wall, Wei Wei could see things on the other side, though they were tinted with a blood-red hue.
“Good stuff…”
Wei Wei couldn’t help but admire: “If I were to sneak a ghost into someone’s room while they’re sleeping, right in front of them…”
If he had mastered this ability back in the training camp, everyone would have liked his sense of humor more. Controlling the ghost to help him wash his underwear, Wei Wei analyzed the situation in his mind. If this was the true ability of the crimson power’s third stage, what category did “listening to fear” fall into? Was it that the crimson power, though less flashy, offered more in terms of abilities? Was it like buying one and getting one free? The crimson demon was quite generous, it seemed.
Just as Wei Wei was deep in thought, a voice suddenly came from behind him: “What time is it, and you’re still here playing with ghosts?”
Wei Wei’s face lit up with a smile as he turned towards the wall. The half-burned human head pendant stared at him with its eyes, looking towards the ghostly noblewoman washing underwear in the bathroom.
“Are you awake?” Wei Wei asked.
“...”
The head pendant sighed deeply, its eyes fixed on Wei Wei: “Your intelligence is always so erratic; it makes me uncomfortable.”
“...”
“Okay…”
Wei Wei wiped away his smile and asked, “Why were you pretending to sleep?”
The head pendant seemed a bit afraid but then justified itself: “I’m a forbidden object of the demon; I have no problem being a quiet dead head. What’s wrong with that?”
Wei Wei narrowed his eyes. The head pendant looked panicked, its face contorted in distress: “Mainly because that terrifying thing was staring here all the time. Who wouldn’t be scared?”
“...”
“Hmm…”
Wei Wei accepted the explanation but found it strange. He chuckled: “So, why did you dare wake up now?”
The head pendant remembered its main point and lowered its voice: “Its will has disappeared.”
