Scarlet Descent -
Ch. 70 - The Lambs
This was a small monastery hidden within the villa district.
Taking the opportunity while smoking, Wei Wei confirmed the nature of this place. At the same time, he vaguely guessed where the missing Life Demons from Scrap Iron City had gone.
At least within this small monastery, he could sense over a dozen individuals from the Life Demon system. Aside from the one who kindly shared a cigarette with him, there were others passing by, each exuding a strong vitality. It was a stark contrast—as if comparing someone who exercises daily, eats nutritious meals, and goes to bed early with someone who stays up all night and barely eats once a day.
They wore uniform black robes and appeared to live an ascetic lifestyle.
This was entirely inconsistent with the typical habits of Life Demons. Due to their excessive vitality, Life Demons generally led hedonistic and depraved lives. The people in that rundown bar from before were much more in line with their usual demeanor...
Yet here, these individuals seemed content just gathering in the courtyard for a smoke.
“This miserable life... it’s almost over, isn’t it?”
The black-robed individuals seemed relaxed. Initially wary of Wei Wei’s suspicious presence in the monastery, their concerns dissipated when he asked for a cigarette.
Smokers are never bad people...
Still, they couldn’t help but pity Wei Wei—just how desperate was this guy for a smoke? When handing him a cigarette, they noticed his hands trembling slightly.
As they smoked together, one of them glanced at Wei Wei and asked:
“Brother, which area are you responsible for?”
“You look unfamiliar.”
Wei Wei withdrew his gaze from observing the surroundings and replied:
“I’m an investigator from the Foundation, here to inspect your operations.”
The group burst into laughter at his words.
Wei Wei laughed along with them before casually adding:
“You’ve brought in quite a few people recently—where did they go?”
The smiles on the three smokers’ faces grew awkward as unease crept in. Following their instinctive glances toward a black building across the courtyard, Wei Wei chuckled:
“So that’s where they are.”
Their expressions became even more uncertain and embarrassed.
Maintaining an even brighter smile than theirs, Wei Wei continued:
“So... are they alive or dead now?”
This time, none of them could muster a laugh. Just then, a whistle sounded in the distance. The previously quiet monastery erupted with hurried footsteps as shadows darted eastward through the darkness.
The smokers around Wei Wei—and others nearby—immediately turned pale. Forgetting whatever questions they had for him, they hastily extinguished their cigarettes and rushed toward the arched building across the courtyard.
To their astonishment, Wei Wei was running even faster than they were—leaving them utterly baffled. Wei Wei was the first to burst through the arched doorway into a spacious yet empty hall. Black-robed figures poured in through other entrances as well. Scanning his surroundings quickly, his gaze landed on rows of empty iron cages stacked against one wall—some partially covered with black cloth while others had open doors revealing nothing inside.
A shadow fell across his face.
It was clear these cages had been used to imprison something—or someone.
Suppressing his growing agitation and maintaining composure, he surveyed the hall once more. Apart from those cages, there was nothing else in sight—the real activity must be happening in the inner chamber ahead.
He strode toward it but stopped abruptly when someone emerged—a figure clad in ceremonial robes that clearly marked them as higher-ranking than the others.
The two locked eyes as they stood face-to-face at the doorway.
Wei Wei frowned slightly and reached for the gun at his lower back when suddenly, the robed figure barked:
“What are you all waiting for? Get inside quickly!”
“...”
“Hm?”
Before Wei Wei could draw his weapon, he noticed a line forming behind him—impatient gazes urging him to move along.
Clicking his tongue in annoyance, he led the group past the ceremonial figure into the inner chamber. Moving from the brightly lit hall into the dimly lit inner chamber caused an immediate shift in atmosphere for Wei Wei. Bright electric lights outside gave way to flickering fire pits along the walls inside—a stark transition from light to shadow.
The center of this inner chamber had been excavated into a large pit. At its heart stood an intricately carved stone platform entwined with countless chains binding something dark red at its center...
It was a massive lump of flesh—over twenty meters in diameter—with no discernible features like eyes or limbs. No hair or skin—just pulsating dark red flesh that seemed to breathe rhythmically without consciousness.
“Something this advanced exist here?”
Wei Wei furrowed his brow slightly as memories of certain Life Demon system entities surfaced.
Shifting his gaze from that grotesque mass of flesh to his surroundings... cold dread crept into his heart.
The pit surrounding the stone platform was filled with bones of various shapes and sizes—shredded clothing scattered among them like remnants of discarded meals. Some remains were blackened and shriveled—as if drained until only husks remained—but what caught Wei Wei’s attention most was atop this pile of carnage: a pair of small white shoes.
They were tiny—no larger than size 31 or 32. One stood upright while its partner lay askew; faint bloodstains marred their pristine white surfaces.
Staring at those little shoes... echoes of a girl’s scream seemed to pierce through time into his ears:
“Brother Wei! They’re eating my feet!”
“...”
A phantom cry—whether real or imagined—stabbed sharply into Wei Wei’s heart for an instant.
“What are you doing?”
A push from someone nearby snapped him out of his daze as others hurriedly took positions around the pit’s edge. “What’s going on here?”
Taking a deep breath to steady himself, Wei Wei turned toward one of them with a warm smile—the kind that put people at ease effortlessly.
“Haven’t you heard? The whistle outside means something’s wrong,” replied his companion anxiously without suspicion. “Guards are investigating now—but once they confirm any danger—we’ll need to evacuate immediately no matter what happens! Ensuring this final sacrifice succeeds is our top priority...”
Nearby, someone muttered under their breath:
“Who knows where we’ll have to go next...”
“Hoo...”
Nodding slightly as understanding dawned upon him internally... As chaos swirled around him above ground level...
Wei Wei nodded, having already grasped the general situation.
As the people around him bustled about, spreading out around the deep pit in the inner hall, he suddenly jumped into the pit.
The surrounding onlookers were stunned, some even thinking he had accidentally been pushed in.
Wei Wei landed in the pit and began moving slowly among the debris and bones. The faint crunch of delicate bones breaking underfoot resonated with each step. He could feel that most of these bones likely belonged to young girls, perhaps even children.
A faint sense of... emotion stirred within him.
He had found it.
So, he had truly found the Blood-Flesh Rose from his dreams.
It wasn’t just a symbol.
Even their actions, their style, their taste—there was no significant difference.
They still loved one thing:
Lambs.
Back at the training camp, he had read about such things in forbidden cult texts—how they selected and "appreciated" their sacrifices.
These people had always loved lambs like this.
Because lambs were inherently pure and didn’t know how to resist.
Thus, when they chose sacrifices, they always preferred those with a lamb-like quality.
Because they didn’t resist, lambs made the best sacrifices, didn’t they?
From the remains of these sacrifices alone, it was clear that this was a large-scale sacrificial site.
Moreover, these offerings couldn’t have been provided by just that Love Demon alone.
This meant that outside, there were likely many other "hunting dogs" like that Love Demon being herded?
It fit perfectly with his vision of the Blood-Flesh Rose...
Suppressing his inner excitement, Wei Wei walked over to a pair of small white shoes and tied their laces together.
He fastened them to his waist, letting them dangle back and forth.
This was evidence.
Then he raised his head and looked at the circle of people dressed in black robes around him. Their pale faces peeked out from under their hoods.
He could feel the helplessness and despair of lambs being thrown into this pit.
Slowly, he reached beneath his robe and pulled out a black handgun from its holster. Smiling at them, he said:
"Why don’t you all go straight to hell?"
...
...
At the same time, in the underground mahjong parlor.
As soon as the old woman spoke, the atmosphere in the room grew oppressively heavy.
Whether it was the plump woman counting money or Uncle Gun standing guard with his hunting rifle while glancing around nervously, everyone froze for a moment as chills ran down their spines.
They stared at Captain Ouyang Jian in stunned disbelief.
Taking out the entire combat team of the Wandering Sect wasn’t enough—he had gone so far as to leave twenty-one bullets in one of their nuns?
Had he completely lost his mind?
Facing their horrified gazes, Captain Ouyang’s pupils seemed to tremble as though experiencing an earthquake.
Without needing to think deeply, countless questions flashed through his mind with answers already forming in his eyes.
After a long pause, he finally exhaled slowly. His expression was resolute, though his voice sounded hoarse:
"Yes."
He nodded slowly and said:
"I did it."
