Chapter 555 555: Coming Back 2
Rosalind shook her head almost immediately. The goddess in her vision desired to sacrifice humans— the very humans she wished to protect — to gain more power.
That woman was not the one who sought to protect the humans, but rather someone who would do anything to defeat the demon emperor.
It was a tragic story of a heroine.
Now that she thought about it, the goddess's past indeed resembled the story of a powerful heroine with her own harem of men following behind her. All of her relationships had been… ambiguous to say the least.
What was more entertaining was the fact that everyone understood why she refused to fall for someone. Everyone seemed to understand that her focus lay on helping the humans and defeating the demon emperor. And it seemed that everyone was fine with it.
Well… everyone but Lucas— the demon prince.
How could a demon be content with following a human he liked? Still, this did not justify the fact that he killed her.
"She was becoming like my father," Lucas uttered. "Hungry for power. Someone who is always hungry for more." Lucas used his hand to tuck a loose strand of her hair behind her ear.
Then he began telling her about his own past— the past that happened thousands of years ago— the past that he had never shared with anyone else. It was about his mother.
After listening to the story of a strong demoness who fell for the Demon Emperor, Rosalind immediately understood Lucas's point of view. He watched the goddess go from being kind and good to someone who would not hesitate to kill all the humans for the sake of power.
Obviously, Rosalind also understood what the goddess felt after she was betrayed not just once but twice by the people she wanted to protect.
"You never cared about the humans," Rosalind said. "Why protect them from the goddess?" he asked. Lucas always showed indifference to the humans, yet when the goddess wanted to sacrifice them, he stopped her. Why?
"Because I am greedy," Lucas said. "I knew that once she succeeded, she would become something else, something more evil. And I do not want that to happen."
Rosalind pursed her lips, surprised at his honesty. Perhaps, she would never understand the depth of his reasoning. After all, she did not live his life. She did not know what he felt or saw what he had seen.
Then she stilled. "What happened after I was stabbed?" she suddenly asked. She remembered going to the portal with Belisarius, and then Mathies stabbed her. After that, she could not remember what happened.
"You closed the portal— the goddess did. As someone who had control over the barrier, closing a portal is as easy as blinking."
"And?"
"Then she sensed her own power inside the sorcerer Atior. That sorcerer planned all this because she wanted to slowly absorb the power that was sustaining the barrier. This was the reason why she did not want the barrier to break. Sadly for her, the goddess herself wanted to break the barrier and take her abilities back."
Rosalind nodded. From the memories that she saw, she knew that the goddess used her own powers to make the barrier stronger. This was at the cost of her own lifespan.
However, she never expected that the goddess would actually want to break the barrier to get her abilities back!
However, just as she was about to ask more, a loud eruption shook the area. The flowers swayed, and the smell of sulfur filled the air.
Lucas's expression immediately turned ugly. "Why are you here?" he turned around and held Rosalind behind him as if protecting her from what was coming.
"Where is she?" Belisarius appeared on the balcony. He immediately found Rosalind behind Lucas and stared at her. "Where is she!?"
"What were you expecting?" Lucas snorted.
"She came back! Where is she!?"
"Why ask questions when you already know the answer?" Lucas said.
"You— " Belisarius waved his hand, a dazzling light appeared on his arm, and soon a white sword materialized in Belisarius's hand. "How could you— "
"Please… Belisarius. What did you expect me to do?" Lucas smirked. "Worship the woman who wanted me dead?" he asked.
Belisarius narrowed at him. However, just as he was about to move, he realized something. He could no longer control his body!
"Benjamen…" Belisarius hissed.
"This place is mine…" Lucas taunted. "Or did your stupid emotions make you forget about it?"
"You— "
"The goddess wanted to destroy the barrier," Lucas said. "She wanted to ruin everything to defeat the Demon Emperor."
"Lies!"
"She wanted to kill the humans," Lucas said. "All of them."
"Stop lying to me. It would not work."
"She wanted to sacrifice everyone for power," Lucas added.
"I said stop lying to me!"
"If you came here to throw a tantrum because someone who died long ago… stayed dead then leave. I do not want to see you in this place."
"Died?" Belisarius frowned. "She— She sacrificed— "
"I killed her," Lucas said coldly. "I stabbed her chest with my sword. A sword that was made by my father. A sword that could kill gods."
"You— The curse— " Belisarius mumbled when he realized something. In the past, he spent hundreds of years guarding the tomb of the goddess in the barrier. He had trained people, raised them to become the guardians!
He was prepared to spend eternity guarding the barrier from the demons… because he thought the goddess sacrificed her life to create the barrier.
"You killed her?" Belisarius asked. Now that he thought about it, when Lucas came back after he took her away, the goddess was no longer with him.
Belisarius did not know that Lucas had the ability to create another dimension. He knew that Lucas was powerful, but just like everyone else, he could not use his abilities inside the barrier that the goddess created.
The barrier would put a limitation on everyone's abilities, and Lucas was no exception.
Yet Lucas said that the goddess took away his abilities and made him immortal. She made him wait for her to return, yet he would die when she returned.
It was a cruel punishment.
"You— " Belisarius was at a loss for words when he realized that this was all a big scheme.
Lucas… fooled everyone!
