Chapter 518 518: Innocent Humans

Atior gazed at Josephine, a smile playing on her lips. "I never cared about the demons. All I desired was for the barrier to remain intact."

Josephine asked, "Why? When the barrier breaks, the sources of magic around us will—"

Atior interrupted, "When the barrier breaks, the demons will undoubtedly invade this continent. The sorcerers from the other side will unquestionably alter everything. All I desired was for this continent to stay as it is. This is the will of the goddess."

Josephine narrowed her eyes at Atior, unable to fully trust her. Sensing her hesitation, Atior added, "The goddess would never allow the demons to invade this place. She would stop them, destroy whatever portal the demons created, and restore peace. Do you not agree with me?"

"I don't understand why you would prevent the barrier from breaking when it could benefit you. However, I believe I don't need to understand these things. I believe we have the same goal. So, I'll work with you," Josephine answered. "However, you must not take actions that could challenge my principles or... I will personally deal with you."

Upon hearing this, Atior smirked. "I'll talk to you once everything is ready." With that, Atior didn't wait for her to respond; she vanished in front of Josephine.

Seeing Atior gone, Josephine let out a sigh of relief. Then she stared at the ruins of Edepes kingdom before leaving.

Meanwhile, Rosalind remained unaware of what had transpired. Currently, she is still in Aster Empire. Earlier, she noticed a few changes in the liquid, so she immediately examined it.

"Why does it seem like it has decreased?" Rosalind mumbled. For some reason, it looked like something absorbed the liquid. Obviously, this something was not her.

However, they had been here for a while, and she hadn't noticed anyone else. All she could see were some treasures and the skeletons of those who had perished in this place.

"It seems that it has begun," Lucas spoke after a few seconds of silence.

"What?" Rosalind asked.

"The portals are here."

"Portals?"

"We should leave this place."

"Take me to the outskirts of Aster," Rosalind said. She had an ominous feeling about this.

Lucas nodded, then held Rosalind tightly in his arms and focused on teleporting them to the outskirts of Aster Empire. In an instant, they were transported to a vantage point overlooking the grand capital of Aster. The sight that greeted them was nothing short of alarming.

In the sky above the city, a colossal swirling portal had materialized, emitting an eerie, pulsating glow that stained the night. Its immense size was daunting, seemingly capable of engulfing the entire city and more.

Rosalind's eyes widened in fear and disbelief.

"That is—"

"It seems that the ones behind this have been planning this for years," Lucas calmly said. "The liquid should be the reason why these portals appeared."

Rosalind said nothing. If she was right, then the people who planned this had killed hundreds, if not thousands, of people to develop such deep malice that slowly turned into the black liquid.

"Then—"

"The same portals should appear in the north and in the other empires," Lucas said. Despite the chaos in the city below them, Lucas looked calm, almost indifferent.

From where they were standing, Rosalind could clearly see a few knights who were trying to direct the panicked people to stay away from the area where the portal could be seen.

"I thought Belisarius would handle it?" she asked.

"I thought so too," another voice echoed behind them. They turned and saw Belisarius standing nearby. "You have proven to be very difficult to find, my lady," Belisarius said, not looking at Rosalind.

"Did you want me to tell you where I am going with my husband?" Rosalind retorted. She did not know why Belisarius had a strange tone, but she clearly did not like it.

"I apologize," Belisarius said. He eyed Lucas, who seemed to be amused by Rosalind's words. "The portals have appeared in Wugari as well as two other places. Soon, portals will slowly appear in the rest of the seven empires."

"Those are smaller... portals," Lucas noted calmly. "The ones responsible didn't have the time to produce all the black liquid. It seems that something happened."

"What do you mean?" Rosalind asked.

"The ones responsible could have created a larger portal. After all, they have planned this for centuries. However, the portals they created were lackluster, not as impressive as they could have been." Lucas calmly explained. "This only means that they were in a hurry. There must be a reason why they triggered the portal this early."

Rosalind glanced at the portal, her gaze complicated. So, the ones who planned all this wanted an even larger portal but were forced to do it now? Why?

"How large is large?" she asked.

"The portal large enough to summon armies of demons, not just hordes of lower-level ones," Belisarius said, his jaws clenched. "Portals large enough to summon thousands of demons."

Rosalind nodded. "Are we going to do something about it?" Seeing the portal seemed to have awakened something inside her, something dark, something that she did not want to feel. A part of her body was trying to suppress the emotion from coming out, but the other part of her seemed to want it to come and was currently embracing the emotions that filled her head.

However, Rosalind was not a fool. She was smart enough to know that this was the soul of the goddess inside her. She also knew that this was not a heroic emotion urging her to save the people. It was the same emotion that plagued her when she visited Edepes.

It was asking her why she was doing what she was doing.

"Even if the humans planned all this for a specific reason, I believe it is only right that we try to stop it," Belisarius uttered. He looked at Rosalind and Lucas. "I know you don't have an inkling to do so, but those are innocent humans. They know nothing. We need to save them."
