Rosie's Games -
Chapter 517 517: Edge of Death
"You would dare call the goddess useless?" her grandmother suddenly hissed. Almost immediately, Josephine tried her best to mask her thoughts.
She never expected her thoughts to go awry, allowing her grandmother an opportunity to read her mind. "I am simply thinking the truth… Without her abilities, she is nothing more than a human. You know very well what would happen to humans when the demons arrive. She has responsibilities. Why was she not doing anything?"
This time, the older woman did not say another word. Instead, she stared at Josephine, her eyes not showing an iota of emotion.
"Are we not going to act against the demons?" Josephine asked. "Are we going to continue hiding here? And act like cowards? Are we not powerful enough to fight against the demons even in this plane? You said it yourself, the demons are weaker in this space. They cannot use their demonic magic."
"But so are we," the older woman answered. "No matter what, we would only act once the goddess of the dark lord himself told us to."
The mention of the dark lord only made Josephine more irritated. She glared at her grandmother before she suddenly turned around. "I am leaving. Please do not call me for me anymore," Josephine said.
"Have you finally made up your mind?" the older woman asked.
"Yes."
The older woman said nothing this time. She only watched her granddaughter leave the house, her gaze solemn.
Meanwhile, after leaving the Blackforest, Josephine immediately went to Edepes where the first sightings of the black liquid were seen. She did not know what happened, but it was obvious that a large portion of the liquid vanished. However, the demons were still crawling around the kingdom.
"So, you finally decided to talk to the old woman," a voice echoed behind her. "Was it because of your lover?"
Josephine turned around and stared at the hooded creature not far away from her. "Atior," she uttered. "Why did you come here?"
"I was waiting for you," Atior said.
"You knew that I went to talk to my grandmother?"
"Or why would the princess of sorcery visit the Blackforest?"
"I am no princess."
"You were treated like one," Atior said. Since she had a hood on, Josephine could not actually see what her expressions were. However, Josephine was almost certain that Atior was currently mocking her.
"What do you need?" Josephine asked.
"Nothing much."
"You would not show yourself to me if you did not need anything," Josephine said coldly.
"Aren't you smart?" Atior scoffed. "I know you think the current goddess can be a bit useless, but that is only because she does not know what she is capable of… yet." Atior vanished from where she was. Then she appeared in front of Josephine. Almost immediately, Josephine took a step back, her gaze wary.
"Do not come near me," Josephine said.
"My… you remind me too much of myself. It is entertaining," Atior chuckled before she vanished. "I have a proposition."
"A proposition?" Josephine asked. "What makes you think that I would work with you?"
Atior's dark laughter echoed through the shadows. "Oh, I don't expect you to willingly join me. But your reluctance won't stop me from making my offer."
Josephine tightened her grip on her staff, prepared for anything. "Speak, and make it quick."
Atior materialized again, this time leaning against a nearby tree. "The humans are growing bolder, and the goddess, oblivious to her true potential, isn't stopping them. I propose an alliance. Our powers combined could bring them to their knees."
Josephine's eyes narrowed. "An alliance with you? You, who revel in bloodshed and chaos?"
Atior grinned, revealing a glimpse of her malevolent nature. "Power comes at a price, dear Josephine. You've seen it with your own grandmother. I just choose to embrace it without reservation."
"I will never join you," Josephine declared, her voice unwavering.
"What if I tell you that what I will do will awaken the goddess inside Rosalind Lux?" Atior's words made Josephine frown. She never expected Atior would know the content of her conversation with her grandmother. Was it possible that Atior had the ability to infiltrate her grandmother's abode?
That's impossible. A sorcerer would never do something so foolish.
Then was it spies?
"I thought you were interested in seeing the real goddess?" Atior taunted. "Awakening the soul inside her body is something that you and I can do. Are you still not interested?"
"How?" Josephine asked. "The last time I saw her… the presence of the goddess was no more. She must have done something to suppress it."
"She did not," Atior uttered. "But the man next to her did."
"Then tell me your ways," Josephine uttered. Atior wasted no time in telling her about the method she planned to use to awaken the goddess through force. The method was actually quite simple.
"So, you suggest we use our abilities to bring Rosalind Lux to the edge of life, forcing the goddess to protect her body," Josephine summarized. Atior's plan involved harming Rosalind Lux until the goddess would reveal herself to protect Rosalind.
"Yes. It's a dangerous game, but if we're careful, we can control the extent of the harm."
Josephine pondered the consequences and implications. If they succeeded, they could wield the power of the goddess, and perhaps use it for a greater good. But the risks were immense, and the moral implications can be quite severe. She did not want to harm someone who did not do anything to her. After all, Josephine is not Atior. She might not like Rosalind, but she still has a conscience.
"And if we fail?" Josephine asked.
Atior smirked, a chilling glint in her eyes. "Then Rosalind Lux may perish. But in this world, survival of the fittest is the law."
"You are insane."
"Insane? No. Desperate? Yes." Atior said. "Just like you, I wanted her to destroy the demons that are planning to come here."
"Why would you want to do that?" Josephine asked. She knew that Atior had no reason to sympathize with the humans. In fact, if the barrier broke, it would be very beneficial for the sorcerers as it would give them access to the relics from the other continent. "Why would you want her to destroy the demons?" she asked.
