Reincarnated As A Lion In Another World -
Chapter 250 250: Water Birth
At the closest river to the mountain, here, the water flowed inward into the forest in the direction of the faraway beach.
Today was the day that a new life would officially come into the world to start its journey and take its role in the grand scheme of things.
Nalii stood in the river, her body easily resisting the current of the water as she folded her arms and stared blankly, deep in thought.
The tips of her green and brown hair were wet and had little droplets of water falling from them.
Her eyes were focused on a particular spot of the river. Below the water was a tunnel that led to the indoor pond of one of the caves in the mountain.
It was in this water-filled tunnel that one of Burdo's five consorts was having a water birth.
"Mother," A telepathic voice entered Nalii's open telepathic channel, causing her to turn her head to the right.
There, at the river bank, Burdo sat in his tier 2 Water Lion form with his head held high and his dorsal fin folded against his back.
His blue scales glimmered under the sunlight that wasn't obstructed by the gigantic magic shuttle in the sky.
Nalii looked at him with a blank expression, she didn't say anything, she just waited for Burdo to explain why he called her.
"You actually responded, I was thinking you no longer saw me as your son," Burdo said, half jesting and half serious.
Nalii narrowed her eyes at his words, still not saying anything. She allowed a deafening silence to reign between them, making Burdo feel awkward.
"I just wanted to tell you not to worry, everything will be fine," Burdo finally said to break the silence. He didn't have anything to say so he just said the first phrases that came to his mind.
Nalii turned her head to look back at that particular spot in the river, her green eyes gleamed softly.
"I know everything will be fine, I'm not worried," Nalii stated with a stoic tone and a blank face. She did even nicer her eyebrows.
Then the silence returned again, no words were spoken, only the sound of rushing water and bubbles rising from that particular spot could be heard.
No creature was allowed to come here at this time under Kael's orders and Nalii was simply here to make sure there were no complications.
Even the birds were not allowed to come near as it could be seen that now were in the sky.
Burdo looked up, gazing past the trees to see the massive red and black magic shuttle that was parked high above the mountain. It was a magnificent thing, he had to admit.
From what he knew, this vessel belonged to his brother, at least, that was what his few supporters in the kingdom told him.
Burdo felt both nervous and excited that Kael had returned. Kael's presence kept a pressure on his mind and was a constant reminder of who he was to the king.
But at the same time, Kael had come just at the time when his consort was about to give birth to his first set of children.
That Burdo had changed his core ways and characteristics would be a lie, in fact, it was better to say that he had adapted.
His days of envying his brother and fantasizing over the king's position and possessions had died down.
Now, he somewhat appreciated Kael for the power he was giving and the authority he was allowed to exercise.
The feeling he had when he ordered wolves around was just so addicting. He couldn't take Kael's stuff unless he really wished for death, but he could take the stuff of other creatures and nothing would happen.
No matter what wrong he did, there would always be someone willing to look the other way to not offend him. Was this what it felt like to have a powerful backing?
But Burdo felt that he would only have genuine power once he strengthened the bond between him and his brother. Of course, it was almost impossible as even if Burdo brought down his pride, Kael would still ignore his efforts and attempt at a better brotherhood.
This was why he had started paying more attention to the birth of his children. The fact that he would be becoming a father for the first time didn't hover around in his mind. What was more important was that his first daughter would be Kael's consort.
Instead of genuine brotherly feelings, he could use his daughter to get closer to the king and siphon more benefits.
Already, he was aware that his work here was limited. N'bayé had already suggested that he go to Paradise Beach to act as a liaison for the lion regime, a bridge between the aquatic world and the rest of the world.
Kael was the one with the vision, the drive, and the mindset to lead this kingdom in the direction best fit for it, and Burdo was aware of this.
He was smart enough to know that if he was out in the same position as Kael was right now, he would probably fumble heavily. He might be excessively greedy, naturally prideful, and an insufferable bully, but he wasn't dumb.
After some time, Burdo could no longer take the silence anymore and spoke to Nalii again.
"If I ever offended you in any way, I'm sorry," He said out of the blue.
Nalii looked at him, one of her eyebrows raised due to her curiosity but her overall expression was one of indifference.
"Okay," She replied plainly.
Burdo frowned, "Was it that bad? What I did back then, was it that bad that you can't forgive me?" He said with a tone of pain in his voice.
Nalii may now be Kael's consort, but it didn't change the fact that she was still his mother and he had grown up knowing her as his mother.
No child would feel comfortable knowing that their mother was giving more attention to any person who wasn't them. Burdo may be grown now but he still felt that way.
He didn't wish for Nalii to dote on him or pamper him like she used to, he just wished that she would acknowledge his existence and their mother-son relationship.
Kael was taking all his mother's attention and it didn't feel fair at all.
"What are you talking about? How can I forgive you when you have no offense?" Nalii asked, she was intentional with her words and deliberately didn't want to talk about it.
"Besides," She continued, "You should be more worried about whether you'll have a daughter or son as that would decide a lot for you.
Instead, you're here having a guilty conscience.
Grow up,"
Nalii's words were like a million burning needles piercing into Burdo's beating heart without mercy. Her indifferent experience made it worse for Burdo, he felt pained.
He lowered his head, no longer having the guts to keep eye contact with his mother.
Nalii was clear about it, just because she wouldn't talk about the past didn't mean she wouldn't judge him based on his past.
But she was right, Burdo should be more worried about whether his consort would give birth to a male or a female.
Male and female lion cubs had a fifty-fifty birth ratio even though sometimes it may look like females were more than the males -which was due to post-birth survival rates-
This meant that Burdo's consort might very well end up giving birth to a litter of male cubs or a litter of female cubs, or just one cub.
The chances of her having just male cubs were worrying for Burdo. If that happened, he would have to wait longer until another if his lionesses had a daughter for him, only then would Kael open up his arms for him to rise.
Nalii gave a side glance at the lion she once felt motherly love for, now as she looked at him, she felt nothing, as though he was just another lion she knew.
With her arms still folded and propping her breasts up, she returned her gaze to the water.
Her antlers glowed slightly, connecting her to the various small and scarce aquatic vegetation in the river.
All of a sudden, there was a splash of water as one of Burdo's lionesses swam up to the surface. This naturally attracted the attention of both Burdo and Nalii.
"What is it?" Burdo asked, standing up and anxious.
"Your Highness, My Prince, she has given birth," The water lioness spoke into Nalii's telepathic channel.
"Male or female?" Burdo hurriedly asked.
"I don't know, I came as soon as it happened," The water lioness said honestly.
"You didn't think it wise to check before coming to tell us?" Burdo reprimanded with a snarl. The lioness shrank her head back at the scolding.
"How many?" Nalii asked, her expression becoming warmer and more expressive as she conversed with the lionesses.
"Three, your Highness," The lioness responded.
