Chapter 99: It Was Fun

"Abi! You need to slow down." Olivia warned as the girl pulled the reins again before the horse could relax from the first gallop. The mare neighted loudly and galloped again but the girl kept pulling the reins.

Leo glared at his sister too but Abi ignored him. She likes the thrill of jumping. It felt like she was touching the sky.

The golden sun hung high in the sky, casting a warm glow over the rolling fields. The scent of fresh earth and blooming wildflowers filled the air as a gentle breeze whispered through the tall grass. Birds chirped in the distance, their melodies blending harmoniously with the rhythmic thuds of the horses’ hooves against the soft ground.

Abi’s laughter rang out, light and carefree, as she let the cool wind rush past her face. She could feel the mare’s powerful muscles beneath her, moving with a grace that sent a thrill through her veins. The world blurred slightly as she galloped, the tall trees lining the dirt path swaying gently in the breeze, their leaves shimmering under the golden sunlight.

Leo, though more composed, was just as enchanted by the ride. He ran his fingers along his horse’s thick mane, feeling the warmth of the animal beneath him. "This is incredible," he murmured under his breath, his heart swelling with a sense of adventure.

Olivia rode beside them, her experienced hands steady on the reins as she watched over them with a fond smile. "You’re doing well, but remember—control is key. The horse responds to your commands, but you must be firm and gentle at the same time."

Abi barely listened. The exhilaration of riding was intoxicating. The way her mare moved, the sensation of freedom—she wanted more. Ignoring Olivia’s advice, she urged the horse forward again, laughing as the mare picked up speed.

"Abi, slow down!" Leo called after her, his voice edged with concern.

But the girl was too lost in the moment to heed his warning. She leaned forward, gripping the reins tighter. The mare neighed loudly, flicking its ears back as if sensing her excitement, but then something changed.

A rustling noise came from the bushes ahead, sudden and sharp. A rabbit darted onto the path, its tiny paws kicking up dust as it scurried away. The mare’s ears shot up, and before Abi could react, the animal reared slightly, then bolted forward in panic.

Abi gasped, her hands yanking on the reins, but the frightened horse ignored her commands. The world around her became a blur of greens and golds as the mare galloped wildly down the path, her hooves pounding against the earth.

"Abi!" Olivia shouted, kicking her own horse into a faster pace.

Leo’s heart leapt into his throat as he watched his sister disappear down the trail. He tightened his grip on the reins, his knuckles turning white.

Abi clung desperately to the saddle, her pulse hammering. The wind roared past her ears, and for the first time, fear replaced her excitement. The mare was running out of control, and she had no idea how to stop it.

The moment the mare bolted, Olivia urged her own horse forward, her heels pressing firmly into its sides. "Abi! Hold on!" she shouted, her voice laced with urgency. But no matter how hard she pushed, no matter how tightly she gripped the reins, Abi’s horse was faster—too fast. The distance between them only widened.

Abi clung to the horse’s neck, her fingers digging into its coarse mane as she fought to stay upright. Her breath came in ragged gasps, her heart hammering against her ribs. The ground blurred beneath her, the trees on either side of the path rushing past like streaks of green and brown.

"Stop! Please stop!" she pleaded, pulling desperately at the reins, but the mare was too terrified to listen. Its ears were pinned back, nostrils flaring as it galloped wildly, its powerful legs kicking up dirt and dust in its frenzy. The pounding of hooves against the earth was deafening.

Leo watched in horror, frozen for a split second before his instincts kicked in. He kicked his own horse forward, his face set with determination, but he knew he couldn’t reach her in time. "Aunt! Do something!" he cried, his voice cracking with fear.

Abi barely heard them. She could feel the muscles of the horse tensing beneath her, every powerful movement sending shocks through her body. The thrill that had once filled her chest was gone, replaced by sheer panic. She wanted to scream, but her throat was too tight.

Ahead, the path curved sharply around a cluster of tall, jagged rocks. The mare, blinded by its own terror, charged forward, not slowing. Abi’s stomach twisted. If it didn’t turn in time—

Then it happened.

The mare leaped, soaring into the air as if trying to fly over an invisible obstacle. For a single, weightless moment, Abi felt suspended between earth and sky, her body lifting from the saddle. Her fingers slipped from the horse’s mane, and then—

She fell.

The world spun as she tumbled through the air. The impact was brutal. A sharp, searing pain shot through her side as she crashed onto the ground, rolling over the dirt and grass before coming to a jarring stop. The breath was knocked from her lungs.

"Abi!" Olivia screamed, yanking her horse to a halt before jumping down. Leo was not far behind, his heart pounding so loudly he could hear it in his ears.

Abi lay still, her chest rising and falling unevenly. A sharp ache pulsed through her limbs, her vision swimming. She tried to move, but the pain flared up, making her whimper.

Olivia was beside her in an instant, her hands shaking as she cupped Abi’s face. "Sweetheart, can you hear me? Where does it hurt?"

Leo slid down from his horse, falling to his knees beside her. "Abi, say something!" His face was pale, his hands hovering, unsure where to touch, afraid of making things worse.

Abi groaned, blinking up at them with dazed eyes. "I—I think I’m okay," she rasped, though every inch of her body ached.

Olivia let out a shaky breath, pressing a hand to her forehead. "You’re lucky," she murmured. "You could have broken something."

Leo swallowed hard, his face still twisted with worry. "You scared us," he muttered, his voice thick with emotion.

Abi managed a weak smile. "It was... exciting... until it wasn’t," she admitted, wincing as she tried to sit up.

Olivia sighed, shaking her head. "That’s enough riding for today. Let’s get you home."

Leo nodded, helping Olivia lift Abi gently. His heart was still racing, but relief was starting to set in.

As Olivia steadied Abi, she glanced back at the trail, where the frightened mare had finally stopped, its sides heaving from exhaustion.
