Chapter 70: Sleeping In The Grass!
Chapter 70: Sleeping In The Grass!
"What are you doing?" Oriana glared at Olivia, "I am sure you were sober when the ball ended. The maids had not served you a single drop of alcohol then how in the world were you so drunk that you were sleeping in the grass?" Oriana looked like she would lose all her senses as she glared at Olivia.,
"Do you know how much trouble I am taking in improving your image? I had never confronted any noble. Yet here I am! I confronted count Moore and forced him to leave the party for you. Yet.. this is how you are repaying me?" Oriana watched as her sister blamed her for everything.
How hilarious her words were.
"You are telling me that you are doing all this for me?" Olivia laughed softly with a look of humor in her eyes.
"... who else would get the benefit then?" Oriana glared at her sister. But for some reason, her heart skipped a beat. She felt like Olivia had changed. She used to be so submissive and shy but now.. Since when had she started staring straight into her eyes?
"Nothing!" Olivia looked away but it did not make Oriana feel better. "As you said, I have not drunk alcohol. Someone must have mixed something in my food. It must be any jealous noble or..." she did not continue but Oriana’s eyes glowed.
"You mean it is from the extended family." Oriana nodded. That could be the case.
"Those fools did not know their position. Do not worry, Olivia. I will find the real culprit. And... I am sorry, I was too harsh just now. It was Damon’s mistake not yours." a smile blooming on Olivia’s face paused.
"Sister, my lord only tried to help me. Do not blame him." Oriana paused, her eyes going cold again.
"Olivia. Even if you were not at mistake, remember Damon is your nephew. He is the biggest contender for the duke’s position. And if he gets the power, he will kill us. You can not show tenderness to your enemy." Olivia bit her lips. She knew better than anyone how they would die. But what if.. What if he was not treated as an enemy?
"He will not if you will not harm him. I have seen many step mothers and step sons getting alone. Sister.. If you... aah" Oriana rubbed her hands after slapping Olivia. A hint of guilt rose and vanished instantly.
Oriana glared at Olivia with a cold look.
"Enough of this nonsense! Just because I have started giving you some freedom, do you believe that you have the right now! Ha! Behave or next time it would not end only with one slap." Olivia looked away. Her own anger rising in her chest.
It was this conceited before that they all would die.
"Mother!" The door opened and Damon entered. He looked at Olivia’s swollen cheeks where red fingerprints could still be seen and then at the infuriated Oriana.
Why had he never noticed before? Olivia was just like him, abused and maltreated by the duchess. A woman who could not treat her family better! How could she treat him, a step son well?
"Damon!" Oriana hissed. "I do not remember inviting you to my room."
He finally looked back at Olivia with a gaze that left her stunned for a second.
"I apologize, I heard a scream and entered instinctively. Did you punish her for the incident last night?" The voice had a strange authority. It left Oriana uneasy.
Damon had never questioned her past. Even when she had sent her to fight a war, he had accepted it without a word.
When he walked closer, Oriana instinctively held the chair tightly. Damon was a strong knight. With a broad shoulder and strong muscles, he had a strong presence. As he hovered over Oriana, she suddenly felt miniscule in his presence.
Her face broke into cold sweat.
"What is..."
"You must not accuse her, she was drunk. I found her sleeping on the ground. As her nephew, I could not just walk away. I only helped her into her room. And it took me some time to leave her room, because..." Olivia raised her head to look at him. "Because she vomited on me when I placed her on her bed. I felt nauseated and ran to her washroom to clean myself." just by speaking about the incident, his face twisted in an ugly way.
He looked nauseated just by thinking about it. Olivia’s cheeks burnt. It was over for her! How she was slowly trying to change her image in front of him. And now she had vomited on him!? How would he treat her kindly in the future??
She was already lucky that he did not strangle her but he even came to clear the matter on her behalf.
Oriana was equally stunned. She looked at the burning cheeks of Olivia with a flushed look on her face.
"You can confirm from the maid. Even if I cleaned it partly, the soiled clothes smelt awful. I left the room as soon as I had cleaned it. I.. could not bear her presence anymore." he slightly glanced at Olivia and looked away as if she was smelling.
Olivia unconsciously sniffed herself. She had thought it was mud and dirt. But that was not the case?
"In that case..." Oriana was at a loss of words. "Still you should have cleared the matter. Olivia is contending for the position of the second prince’s wife. She could not have blemishes on her image." Damon paused. A dark ray flickered in his eyes and disappeared.
"I will keep that in my mind, mother. In fact, it would be better that she could not drink again. If she vomited on the second prince too.." he trained looking uneasy. Olivia scowled at him. Did he think she vomited all the time? It was the first time alright?
"That would never happen!" Oriana spat with anger, "Olivia, you are not allowed to drink again."
