Chapter 259: Hurt You!

The heavy wooden door creaked open as Liliana stepped into the room with limp Olivia in her arms. She did not go through the trouble of walking inside the inn with the main door. She was worried that if the villagers would see her, they would talk about her. So she just teleported herself into the room.

Damon was already pacing in the room with his jaw tight. His eyes filled with unease. The bedcovers were still half-thrown aside from where he had gotten up in a rush earlier, only to find Olivia missing. The growing storm of dread in his chest had consumed him completely but the moment he tried to leave the room, an invisible wall stopped him.

This had made him panic. Where did Olivia go that she had to make sure that he would not follow her. When he felt the noise behind him, he turned to look in confusion but his eyes widened and he ran,

"Olivia," he strode forward immediately when he saw Liliana holding Olivia. his voice trembled when his eyes fell on her unmoving form. "What happened?!"

Liliana adjusted Olivia’s weight carefully, lowering her onto the bed with a quiet grunt. "Calm down," she said gently. "She just fainted because of exhaustion. That’s all."

Damon dropped to his knees beside the bed, brushing hair from Olivia’s damp forehead. Her skin was warm, but she looked too pale and gaunt.

"Why? Was she attacked? Did villagers try to fight her or was it witches again?"

"No," Liliana cut in firmly. This man.. Why was his thoughts running wild? She shook her head and placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder. "She had been training too hard, I would say, she is in haste but pushing herself far beyond what is reasonable. So, her body just gave out."

Damon’s brows furrowed. "Why didn’t anyone stop her?"

"She didn’t listen," Liliana said with a wry but worried smile. "She was focused. She was so obsessed with becoming strangers that she had forgotten everything else. As if trying to outrun something only she could see."

Damon’s fingers tightened over Olivia’s hand. "She was not supposed to push herself like this. She’s barely recovered from the last ritual." He stopped himself, shaking his head, frustration and fear tightening his throat.

Liliana stood quietly for a moment, watching him. "She will be fine. She just needs rest. A night’s sleep and she will wake up with that stubborn fire in her eyes again." Her voice softened. "Right now, what she needs is someone to stay with her. And I trust only you with that."

He didn’t respond immediately, just exhaled a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. His eyes never left Olivia’s face.

"Will you be all right with her? Or should I stay?" Liliana asked, turning toward the door.

Damon nodded slowly. "It is fine, you can go. I know you are still not comfortable between us. I will take care of her, do not worry."

Liliana nodded with a grateful look. She gave one last look to Olivia then slipped out, pulling the door closed behind her.

Silence fell, broken only by the soft rustle of the blankets as Damon adjusted them around Olivia. He sat on the edge of the bed, brushing his thumb along the back of her hand.

"You always do this," he murmured. "Take responsibility for everything and run into the storm alone."

His voice was quiet, rough around the edges. He leaned in, pressing his forehead gently to hers, drawing in the steady rhythm of her breath.

"I am here now. You don’t have to carry everything by yourself."

She didn’t stir, but something in her expression softened, as though the tension in her body recognized his presence even in sleep.

He stayed like that for a while, watching over her, tracing the curve of her cheek, the smudge of dust still on her jaw, the faint tremble of her lashes. The armor she wore in the daylight had slipped away now, revealing just a girl, worn down by too much responsibility and burdens.

Guilt gnawed at him. He’d been so focused on the world outside that he hadn’t noticed how much she had been burying inside.

A quiet knock interrupted the moment, and a servant pushed open the door just enough to place a small bowl of cool water and a folded cloth on the table before retreating.

Damon dipped the cloth and gently pressed it to Olivia’s forehead, brushing it along her temple. His actions were careful and reverent.

"I will watch over you this time," he whispered. "Even if you don’t ask me to. Even if you hate me for it." His voice faltered and he looked at her softly. "I can’t lose you again."

"Damon" Her voice was barely a whisper. It felt dry and strained.

He leaned forward at once, relief flashing across his face. "You are finally awake, Olivia."

Her brows drew together, and she turned her head slightly, her eyes narrowing. "Where. How did I return?"

"You fainted," he said gently. "Liliana brought you here. You’ve been pushing yourself too hard."

She blinked slowly, but her throat worked as she swallowed. "I am thirsty."

Damon reached for the cup of water on the bedside table, but she turned her head away before he could bring it to her lips.

"No, water is not enough." Her voice was weaker now, it felt almost ashamed. "It is not enough."

He paused and looked at her for a second longer than she could bear it. Olivia’s breathing quickened as if anticipating his reaction, and her gaze turned conflicted, almost petrified. She hated needing it, hated asking. Her lips parted, as if to stop herself, to say it didn’t matter.

But before she could say anything, Damon rolled back his sleeve.

"Take it," he said, voice calm and resolute.

Her eyes widened. "Damon, no—"

"I am fine," he cut her off gently and he brought his wrist to her lips. "You need it. You can’t keep draining yourself like this and expect to survive."

Her eyes flicked to his face. There was no hesitation in him, no disgust or fear.

"I don’t want to hurt you," she whispered, her voice cracking.

"You would not, ever!"
