Chapter 258: Defeat Fate For You!
"I am sure we will find a war, Rhistel." She calmly filled his plate again making sure that he ate well.
Rhistel looked at him with a smile. He could see how much Oriana had changed now that she did not need to fight for her position and did not need to worry that her husband would cheat on her and her position would be taken by another maid.
The security and peace around her hand made her a better person. Oriana noticed that he kept looking at her and raised a brow. She remained seated beside him to make sure that his every need was fulfilled.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" she asked as she felt heat rising to her skin. Rhistel laughed and his gaze softened a lot.
"I just realized how beautiful my wife is!" she touched her soft cheeks. his gaze flickered on her candlelight dancing across her features.
The lines of fatigue on her face were more visible now, her eyes shadowed but clearer than before.
He set the spoon down, the bowl half-finished, and turned to her. "You haven’t slept either, have you?"
"I couldn’t," she admitted softly. "I wanted to make sure that everyone is well and we are not going to be attacked again. Sleep was the last thing I could have thought of!"
His hand reached for her waist again and he pulled her into an embrace.
"I am here now," he said in a voice low and rough with emotion. "And I will take care of every threat for you. You should go and rest as much as you want. I will protect my precious treasure no matter what."
Her throat tightened, a lump forming that she couldn’t swallow down. No one had ever called her precious. She was nothing but a scheming woman. A serpent, a viper who ruins lives. "You are just exaggerating."
"No," he said, shaking his head gently. "You do now know what you are for me, Oriana. And never humble what you have done for our people. I am sure they all think it was more than enough."
Oriana’s eyes welled, but she blinked them back, forcing a breath. "I was afraid I would lose everything. Even if I have to give up on my life, I want to save you and this land."
"Oh Oriana, we are going to live a long life with each other until you hold a dozen more kids." he said softly with a twinkle in his eyes.
"A dozen more kids!," she said, voice cracking with shock and astonishment.
Rhistel leaned in slowly, his forehead touching hers. "Yes, and if you allow, we can start planning one now." The simple closeness of it made her breath catch. Her fingers curled around the fabric of his sleeve, holding on to him like an anchor.
"I have missed you." he whispered,
"I missed you too," she admitted. She did not even realize as tears filled her eye/s
"I thought of you every night," he murmured, his breath brushing against her lips. "Every time I closed my eyes... I saw you standing right where I left you. And I kept riding."
Her hand lifted, fingers brushing his cheek. "I am relieved that you came back."
"I will always come back to you." he stared at her as he made the solemn promise.
There was a pause, and then their lips met, slow and searching for the assurance they both required.
The kiss was not born of passion, but of longing, of promises buried beneath battle cries and sleepless nights. It was the kind of kiss born from surviving, from enduring, from the silent understanding that they might not get many such moments. The fear of losing each other brought them closer than before.
Even though they did not declare their love for each other like others, it was shown in their eyes at this moment.
He pulled her closer and wrapped his arms around her as if to shield her from everything outside this fragile, fleeting bubble. Her fingers wound through his hair as her breath quickened as the weight of the past days lifted just enough to let something tender through.
Their foreheads pressed together again as they broke apart, breathless, the world slowly returning.
"You should rest," she said, brushing her lips against his cheek.
"Only if you come with me," he replied.
She nodded and rose, offering him her hand.
Without a word, they moved to the back room where the guest quarters had been converted into a quiet space away from the noise and grief of the courtyard. Oriana lit a single lamp, casting a warm, golden hue over the small room. Rhistel sat on the edge of the bed, his armor set aside, and let out a long breath.
"My room..."
"That was the first place that attacked." he nodded, he would have expected that what she brought him here instead.
Oriana knelt to untie his boots. her hands were gentle despite the tiredness weighing on her. Rhistel watched her in silence. his heart ached with something he couldn’t name.
"You don’t have to serve me like this," he said.
"I am not serving you," she said, looking up with a faint smile. "I am caring for the man I love."
He leaned down and kissed her again, this time softer but longer as if he was reluctant to let her go.
When they lay down beside each other, it wasn’t rushed or urgent. Her head tucked under his chin, his arm wrapped securely around her. They didn’t speak for a long time, just listening to the sound of each other’s breathing.
Rhistel’s fingers threaded through hers. "We will survive this," he said into her hair. "And when this ends, I will arrange a grand marriage for you. I will rebuild everything for both of us."
Oriana didn’t reply, only nestled closer. "I know, you would do a good job."
"Yes, as long as you would be with me, Oriana. I promise I will defeat even fate for you."
