Chapter 248: Only Solution!
Chapter 248: Only Solution!
The three remaining witches stood frozen, their faces a mix of shock and seething rage. Olivia had done it. And worse, she had absorbed the witch’s magic, something believed to be impossible, forbidden even among their own kind.
"You will regret this," the first witch finally rasped, her voice trembling with fury. "You’ve made an enemy of the coven, Olivia. You think yourself powerful now, but your strength will wane. And when it does, we will be there. And we won’t be merciful."
"You’ve chosen their side," the second spat bitterly. "So die with them."
"But not today," the third whispered as all three witches took a step back, their eyes darting to the frozen crowd behind Olivia. Then, without another word, their forms shimmered and dissolved into black mist, vanishing into the wind.
Silence returned to the village square. The villagers stared at Olivia in awe and fear. Whispers began to rise. Many eyes were filled with uncertainty, even dread. After all, they had seen what she could do. If a witch like her stood against them, they would be doomed. Their first instinct was to burn her but they were sure they were not strong enough to achieve that feat.
Olivia stood in the middle of the clearing. Her chest was rising and falling with exertion. The blood dripped slowly from the wound on her forehead. Her silver and crimson eyes dimmed, returning to their natural hue as she turned to face them. She could see the fear and confusion in their eyes and sighed. If only...
"Olivia," Rhistel stepped forward and hugged her. his tone loud and clear, so everyone could hear. "Thank you, Olivia. We would not have survived without you."
She turned, startled as she looked at him in confusion. Was he not angry that she had performed magic in the open?
"You protected us! all of us," he continued. "Even when we feared you, even when we doubted you, you stood between us and death. You saved this village. Even when we gave you nothing but hatred and you had no reason to help us."
People glanced down, uncomfortable, remembering how they had looked at her with hatred. How they had supported Evelyn Clondorie and tried to kill Olivia. How they had accused her of taking their children for sacrifice.
One by one, villagers stepped forward.
"I’m sorry," said a man near the front with downcast eyes, "we judged you. we were wrong."
"We all were," added a woman, clutching her child’s shoulder. "You have saved my daughter."
"Forgive us, Olivia," said another, an elderly man wiping tears from his eyes. "We didn’t know."
Olivia swallowed hard. Her throat burned with emotion. She wanted to speak but couldn’t find the words. When a girl came forward, she looked pale and feeble.
"I remember you and another girl had saved us that night when we were bleeding. If not for you, we would have died." The girl bowed and others followed. Damon looked at the scene with pride and admiration in his eyes.
Olivia never fought with others like him. But her kindness, care and persistence had always won the hearts of others. Sometimes, he wanted to hide her in the room so that he could have all to himself. Before, he used to think that he would protect her in their relationship. But time and time again, she had proved that the role had reversed. She did not need protection at all! He needed her and leaned on her.
She drew in a slow breath, her hands trembling slightly from the weight of everything that had just happened.
"It’s not over, They didn’t leave because they were defeated. They left to regroup" she finally said, "The witches would return for revenge."
The crowd stiffened, fear instantly flickering back into their expressions. Mothers clutched their children closer. Men exchanged glances, their fists curling by their sides, helplessness returning.
"Where is Evelyn Clondorie?" someone from the crowd suddenly asked. "She brought those witches here, didn’t she after she promised us safety!"
More voices rose in panic. People turned to look around, but the woman was nowhere to be seen, and it only surged their anger.
"We need to find her and kill her so the witches would stop attacking us. It is all because of her!" they all nodded in agreement. They could not fight with witches, but they could kill the preparator.
"You must seek your revenge against a traitor. But that would not stop the witches from coming here. What matters is that we prepare," she said, firm and steady.
"Prepare how?" an elderly woman asked with a quivering voice. "We’re just farmers and merchants. If those witches come again—"
"I’ll place protective talismans across the village," Olivia said, "but they would not be enough to protect for a long time. We must come in terms with the witches. You have killed them for a long time out of fear. They have never killed innocents before but now they were on their wit’s end and want to take lives to protect themself. It is not their fault only." The villagers were stunned. Their cheeks burnt but they did not have a refute.
They looked at each other helplessly.
"We can not offer them our lands." one of them said agitatedly, and Olivia nodded as if she had expected it.
"Yes, but is this land safe enough to live for you anymore?" she smiled softly, "for now, it is better that we take a break and rest. Only then we could think about this issue wisely." they wanted to refuse again but they did not want to come as ingrate. So they could only nod and leave.
Olivia looked exhausted after what had happened. She leaned on Damon unceremoniously, surprising him.
"I need to rest!" Damon nodded and took her in his arms. She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and leaned on him, surprising him again. "Are you alright?" he asked in a worried tone but she only nodded.
"It was a long day for me. And I need to rest now."
