Chapter 145: You Should Go!

Silently he waited for her there and for some reason, her body felt a strange fluttering feeling. She did not use his thighs. He was a duke and she was a fallen noble, fighting for her place. It could be a scandal. She could feel all the eyes of the staff. They are going to fall off their socket!

Why was he doing this? She walked closer and cleared her throat. The carriage’s door was high. She can manage. But her dress could not. Why did she choose this dress? If she raised her leg too high, her bare knees would show. But she did not have a choice.

She held the door tightly and pulled herself up making sure her dress did not rise when she felt a hand on her waist and the support. His fingers brushed her skin and she stiffened harder than a wood, for the contact sent a shocking spark along her skin as though his kiss to her palm had sensitized her, and now she had no defenses. She pushed that feeling away and entered the carriage hurriedly the moment her legs felt the floor beneath them again.

When the door was closed behind her, she realized they were in such a close space. Alone! And his fragrance had filled the whole space and somehow engulfed her too. She did not even like the sea’s breeze smell. But it did not feel that bad now. Why did he smell like the sea? She was sure he had taken a bath from the fresh water and.. Olivia stiffened! And slapped herself instinctively.

Why should she care how he took his bath!? The thought left her skin tingling. She must have lost her brain. He was only distracting her to read what she was hiding. There was no way he would be interested in her as a man. She was his aunt and he had killed her.

She had thought the words would work like magic, but it barely made any difference. She could feel his heat on her waist which was ridiculous since he was wearing gloves and she was adorned with at least seven layers of fabric on her skin.

"Do you need water?" he asked with a smile. Olivia realized she was covered in sweat. She wiped her face and shook her head.

"Are you nervous?" he smiled, "i am surprised too that you are called to attend the meeting with me." see! He did not feel what she could feel. It was just his trick to lower her defence and make her weak.

She hid her confusion in a study of her handkerchief, which she folded, end over end, into a tiny, tight square and then wiped her face.

"They must want me to experience the royal processings, after all I will be part of the royal family soon." Olivia felt better when her voice came confident. Yes! That was right, her future was planned and waiting for her. She could not be distracted by a man.

His eyes hardened for some reason and he looked away. Olivia opened the files he had sent for her again. There was no need to feel guilty. She had said nothing wrong.

Olivia opened the files and started reading it.

"Have you decided your response?" She could not keep her calm. Cursing, she asked him again. And his head tilted back to her. His lips curled.

"Are you asking me as my family or as the future royal princess?" his family? The word sounded like a fairytale!

"I am asking as your partner in the deal." she brushed strange thoughts away. "They would ask you to give a part of the duke’s estate for making the silk route. And you might even be asked to shift there to protect the land so that barbarians would never attack again." she looked at his bated breath. In the past, he had refused because he could not earn the favor of the lords of vassal families and wanted to live here.

But this time, he had already achieved all that. If he decided to go to his estate, they would have no reason to cross paths again. She did not need to worry about the unseen future then.

"Are you so sad about me going?" Damon smiled lightly, "you can always come with me there." She was sad?

"You must be hallucinating." she bit the word hard before splitting it. But it only made his smile wider.

"Aunt!" he leaned. His actions made his legs brush her dress and he stopped there. She was acutely aware of the heat passing through his skin to hers. Her breath hitched. "You have always cared about me. Did you forget you told me this yourself?" she should have moved away when he raised his head and brushed a wild tendril away from her face.

"It was disturbing me." The words were more breath than sound. "I want to see your face clearly without hindrance." he was too close for her to form thoughts.

All she could do was float in his smell. "If you refuse, i will not go." he looked into her eyes intently and she blinked. She pulled herself away and leaned on the seat with such force as if she wanted to be one with the seat.

"You should go! If the route crossed the duke’s estate. The value of the estate will rise too high and your position as the duke would be consolidated. It will be..."

"Yes, I know. I have my own plans." he nodded with a serious face. It made her frown.

"You do not trust me to share them with me?" Damon smiled and finally pulled away to give her room to breathe. Her face was getting pale due to lack of air in her body.

But the way he looked at her, it was hard for her to breathe.

"It depends on mutual trust, aunt. Do you trust me enough to share your real thoughts with me."
