Chapter 146: A Duchess For The Duke

Chapter 146: A Duchess For The Duke

When the carriage stopped, Olivia gasped and took a fast hurried breath as if she had been underwater all this time.

Her actions brought the attention of the six maids waiting for him and Damon.

"My lady.. My lord." Olivia watched as they did not address Damon as his grace yet. She wanted to tell him to not lose his composure. It was only a matter of time. But looking at the dazzling smile on his face, she blinked. Where did that short tempered man go?

She knew him well. But she did not understand this new version of Damon at all!

"Olivia.." she blinked and noticed they were all looking at her. "You are not coming?" he repeated and she flushed.

"I..." her burning cheeks made his eyes hardened.

"Even if you are waiting to see his highness first, you should follow the royal decorum and come with me." he chided her like a strict abider of the rules. Olivia flushed harder. She was not even thinking about Edward.

"Yes!" Why was she not thinking about Edward? The thought cleared her mind and she paid more attention to the surroundings. In the past she was never part of this deal.

She had only heard about it from the gossip from the maids. She could see more servants around and the way they all were alert. They were taken to the central palace and stopped in front of the meeting room exclusive for personal guests of his majesty.

"His majesty wants to meet with you, my lord." the maid watched Olivia, coldly, "alone!"

Olivia stopped. It was expected. So when Damon turned to look at her with a frown, she signalled him to go fast with her eyes.

But surprisingly, he extended his hands. She blinked. Had he lost his mind? But he took her hand and turned to look at the maids.

"She is with me." The maid looked stunned too. They exchanged glances as if they had not expected this situation.

"My lord, the lady can wait in the guest room if you worry." the maid added respectfully.

"So you were planning to keep her standing earlier?" Damon scoffed. "Either we will go together, or we will return to my manor." his voice was resolute.

Olivia did not understand what the fuss was about. She did not mind waiting and standing here. She wriggled her hands but he only held it tightly confusing her.

"My lord, I do not need to attend." she explained but he did not turn to look at her. One of the maids had already gone inside and returned with hurried steps. She nodded meekly.

The maid that was leading all of them sighed.

"Yes, my lord. We understand. Please come this way." she bowed her head respectfully. Damon did not let go of her hands even when they walked inside.

Olivia was on her toes as she was dragged inside. His majesty was sitting on a large leather chair covered with the fox’s skin they had won in the last hunt.

He smiled but his eyes narrowed on their entwined hands before moving to Damon’s face. The heat passed through her hands and burnt every cell of her skin. She pulled her hands away with more force and only breathed when she was free again.

"Damon! How have you been?" the man pointed at the empty chair. Olivia realized there was only one chair on the table. A large sofa was near the wall. She hurriedly sprintied there afraid that Damon would make a fuss again.

He watched her but did not comment this time. But he did not reply to his majesty too. His whole attention was on her and all Olivia wanted was to disappear.

"I know. It had been only two weeks since the tragedy had befallen you and yet I have called you here. It must be hard to concentrate on the matter yet. But it is important. And so I expect you to let go of your personal feelings and emotions and concentrate on the matter at hand." This was a warning. Even she could feel the threat coming from the tone and feel burdened by it.

Damon slowly bowed his head and took the seat offered to him.

"Your majesty, it was not my emotions but my position. I have not been given the decree yet. So, I could not take the position of my father. Even if I want to offer support, I can not when I am just a lord. This is why I am so conflicted as I stand here. I am afraid I will disappoint his majesty." His voice had courtesy but not fear one should feel.

The king smiled. Finally relaxed and leaned on his seat.

"I see that you have improved relations with your step mother’s family too." The gaze was piercing toward Olivia and her heart skipped a beat. She had to find a way to resolve it soon.

"Of course, Olivia is my family." Olivia paused. She raised her head and stared at Damon without blinking.

No. She wanted to believe she misunderstood him. But a lump was forming in her throat. Kindness was a very underrated quality. She had vowed once that she would never neglect to appreciate it. Only she had never expected to find it in him.

"Of course," he added dryly. "You have all the traits of a good ruler, Damon. A strong knight, a kind person and a forgiving nephew." there was something in his voice that alerted Olivia. As if his majesty was reminding her of who she was! It made her feel guilty for some reason.

"As long as you accept all the conditions of the meeting, I will provide the decree to you, Damon." he spoke intimately. Olivia wanted to laugh at the change of tone.

"It would be my honor." Damon bowed, ignoring the sweetness of the tone. "And... if everything went well, I am planning to offer my daughter to you too. A duke could not rule without a duchess."
