Chapter 138: What Do You Know?

"You have not cooked it." he said as if it made sense? Olivia knew that she could not cook well. But she had learnt it since she had returned. She had dreaded the time when they would starve but at the same time she had prepared herself for it. He poked the pie with the fork and ate it with a brooding look. How she wanted to snatch it back and then threw it at his face.

But it was hard to control herself as she watched him. He was making such an ugly face as if she was feeding him a bitter or charred meal.

"Return it if you do not want to eat it. I have purchased it from the best dessert shop. A piece of it cost two silver." Olivia shook from anger. This man knew how to press her button and make her frown every single time.

"Here, taste it yourself." He cut a piece and held it for her. Olivia narrowed her eyes but she leaned and took a bite of it. She was hungry anyway. She had left the manor early to meet Edward.

And then she was so busy with the deal that she did not get the time to eat even where there were many delicacies and then this man... she inhaled a deep breath, trying her best to control her anger.

"Since you are offering me, I will not stand for courtesy." She sat and ate half of the pie. Damon watched her eat. The way her lips move. The way her eyes sparkled. Did she not remember at all?

Apple pies used to be her favorite. He had brought it for her a few times. She used to be so shy. He had forced her into a friendship through these pies. How time had changed. He looked at the pie in his hands as if he was searching for that past in it.

"Damon!" his gaze slowly moved back to her. She had finished her piece at some point and now staring at her looking worried. Worried! Ha! He did not even know if it was a genuine worry or an act. He did not want to fall into another trap! "You have promised to let the kids have a good life if I help you. I have helped you so far. Why are you doing this?"

"Ha!" he laughed mockingly. The mockery was for himself. When she brought a pie for him. He entertained the thought that she was worried about him. Or the pie reminded her of their past. He had forgotten the past a long ago then why did its pieces were gnawing his chest now.

He pushed the plate away.

"You seem to have some illusions, Olivia. I have promised you that I will let them live. Are they not living well?" he shook his head looking at her with disbelief. "I did not take away the chance to study from them. I did not stop the maids from serving them. I did not send assassins for them when they are sleeping soundly at their beds. I did nothing of what their mother did with me." he slapped the table with force and for a second, Olivia closed her eyes shut.

She knew he would not hurt. She knew it was their mistake. But for some reason, she was disappointed. She had expected better from him! She had expected.. What had she even expected? That he would take care of the kids as their guardian once she left them?

She could taste the bitter taste of reality in her mouth. It corroded her tongues and mind like a poison rapidly spreading in her veins and killing her slowly.

"The maids.."

"They are trained to torment by your mother. I did not say a single word. Yet they are tormenting you and kids now to show their loyalty toward me. What do you want me to do? Dismiss them? Would you cook meals for us then?" He raised a brow at her with his eyes looking at her like a hawk had marked its prey.

But then they were filled with taunts. "Ah! I forgot that you are busy planning your marriage. You want me to take care of your sister’s kids when you yourself want to leave them? Do you think I am Olivia." he stood up. The room felt suffocating.

She felt suffocating. As if she had sucked all the air from the room and he could not breathe. The thought that she had enjoyed her evening with Edward and now she wanted to chide him for eating the meal she had cooked, corrupted him. He wanted to burn something. He wanted to kill someone. Edwaed would be the best choice.

But then she would find someone else again. Would the cycle ever end?

He ran a hand in his hair and found her standing too. She was staring at him looking worried. Good! She should be worried. He could not bear the burden of all these emotions again. He wanted her to feel them even if it meant hurting her. At least her mind would be busy with her so that she would not think about the prince anymore.

With that thought, he crossed the distance between them. She took a step back instinctively when he walked to her and for a second, he wanted to slap himself. She was afraid of him. After being protected by him, she was afraid of him?

He laughed but there was no humor on his face. It was cold and full of anger. She did not know why he was so angry.

Before she knew, her back had hit the rack of books and he had still covered the distance between them. He was looming over her and suddenly the room felt tiny. She felt tiny in his presence.

"Let me clear this, Olivia. I am not your servant. I don’t take your orders. We had a deal. You would secure the title for me and I would spare their life. If you want more, you have to offer more."
