Chapter 137: Eat With Me!

Olivia picked up one of the bags and left the room, leaving them confused.

She inhaled and exhaled as if all her energy was only utilized in breathing. Her legs felt like lead and her body suddenly felt too heavy. She did not have the strength to drag herself.

The maids were discreetly looking at her as she took steps toward the third floor where Damon lives now.

Olivia ignored them. Ignoging was an art she had learnt early in her life. Soft whispers, gossips in low voices, and insults! She had faced them a lot when her father died and her mother had to sell all their properties. When they have turned into servants from a noble in one night.

The situation did not scare but Damon did. She had thought they had come to a mutual understanding. She was even bold enough to believe that they have developed a bond! Something she could call friendship. But now she knew, it was only her illusion.

Damon must have felt wary of her knowledge. He must have entertained her until he completed his plan and now that he did not need her anymore. He did not need to act. She felt a strange burning sensation in her body just thinking about it. How she wanted to punch his gut for tricking her when she was offering sincerity.

She had chosen to help him instead of her sister with her knowledge. Not only did she want to save her life, but she also wanted a better future for him. But what had she gotten in exchange. Betrayal! Her throat burnt but she ignored that feel too as she stood in front of his study.

She took another deep breath to collect the courage. Courage to not attack him the moment she opens the door but to smile at him.

The door was opened after two knocks. She knew this man, his name was Theodore. He was there when Damon had questioned her about rations.

The man did not seem surprised. He stepped aside so that she could enter. Olivia frowned. He was letting her inside just like that?

And if that was not enough, the moment she entered, he walked out and closed the door. Olivia flinched as she saw the locked door and the absence of them and suddenly made the room colder.

"You are here." she stiffened at the voice. She looked around to see that there was no other staff. She had thought the maids would be fawning around him. Or did he scare them already?

"Are you planning to stand there all night?" Olvia blinked hearing her teasing voice. Are they friends now? Who was he teasing?

Her jaw ticked but she reminded herself that punching him would not end well. He was the duke now.

She forced a smile even when it was hard.

"I heard that you have eaten simple dishes cooked by me." she walked toward him. Trying hard to ignore the open button of his shirt. It showed nothing more than a small part of his tanned chest. His broad arms would have been a better feast for the eyes.

Wait! What was she thinking? She cursed inside her heart as she reached the table. He was sitting on the other side. His face looked exhausted. She noticed a dozen files on the table. Was he working all day? Did he not take a break at all? How could he treat his health lightly? She frowned looking at the amount of work.

Damon noticed her frown and chuckled.

"You just came home. Do you not want to rest?" her eyes tore from the files and met his. Olivia blinked looking at his pleased expression.

When she entered, his face was dark as if a volcano was about to erupt. And now he was smiling?

"I have bought desserts for the kids. I thought you might like some too." she sat down without being offered.

She picked up the files and arranged them neatly. Her hands paused when she reached for the file he was studying. There was a nib mark showing that he was reading something important and about to write a note. But the hesitation stayed only for a second. She closed that file too and placed them with other files.

When Damon did not stop her, she became bolder and stood up to pick up dishes from her small coffee table in the corner. She filled a glass of water and placed it beside the apple pie.

"You brought me an apple pie?" He raised a brow at her when she walked closer.

"Yes, I remember you liking it when I had.. In the past when you were young. I do not know what you like now. Does your taste change?" she lied with a straight face. She knew he liked apple pies since he had eaten it all the time after being duke as if he was trying to fill a gap in his stomach or his memories.

But for some reason, she did not like the way he was looking at her. As if he was searching for the truth in her eyes.

"I think you are confusing your favorites from mine!" She was? She did not remember liking apple pies. She looked at him with a furrowed brow. But he had already looked away. He was staring at the apple pie as if it was a file he was reading.

Her frown grew deeper. And for a second, she forgot that he was her enemy and she was here to discuss business.

"I have not mixed poison in it." she commented harshly as she cut the pie and passed a piece to him. "Eat it. It is getting cold."

"..." she was stunned by herself when Damon raised his head to meet her eyes again. She gulped the fear down and glared at him instead.

"You are not this hesitant when you eat the lunch I prepared. Why are you so worried now? Do you want me to taste it first?" she leaned and cut a piece from his plate and ate it. "Here, you can eat it now."
