Chapter 126: United Family

"...." silence filled the room. Everyone watched Damon with a horrified gaze. The man was looking humiliated and appalled then.

"You are... putting allegations on my daughter." the man spoke after a gasp.

Damon shook his head looking bored.

"Not at all, i will never dare to question a lady." he looked at count Rupert and replied with a sincere smile.

Though confused, the man looked relieved by Damon’s reply.

"I am questioning your intentions, count Ruppert." his eyes grew colder leaving the man in cold sweat. "My father’s funeral is not complete. Yet you are creating a scene here. What are your intentions?" he asked in a harsh voice.

Count Rupert opened his mouth only to close it again. He was at a loss for words. It was true that he wanted to grab his attention and bring him closer to his daughter but he had never planned to do it openly.

Now that everyone was watching him, he felt embarrassed. And it was all that woman’s fault. He glared at Olivia as if he wanted to skin her alive before taking a breath and bowing his head.

"I had made a mistake. Please forgive me, my lord." he bowed his head and pressed Cora’s hand.

The daughter took the hint and sniffled looking hurt.

"Papa! We shall leave. We are not welcomed here." The girl looked deeply pained looking at her father.

Damon watched the scene with a blank face. He was not even amused by their act.

He nodded slowly. "That would be for the best now."

"...." the count was at a loss of words again. He had thought Damon would feel embarrassed and apologize. Or at least ask them to stay. Now they could not stay even if they wanted to.

Gulping the lump in his throat, the cont nodded at his daughter and held his hand tightly. Without turning back, he left the funeral.

Everyone watched his back with a terrified face. They never knew that Damon was protective of Oliva and his stepbrother and step sister.

They were relieved that they were not the one who insulted Olivia. But at the same time they looked at her with curious eyes. Why was Damon taking her side? What was he planning?

The sound of the trumpet stopped their train of thoughts. They turned toward the door only to see the second prince, Prince Edward entering in after the announcement.

He smiled at all of them when they curtsied. They were not surprised to see Edward there. The death of a loyal servant of the royal family, the head of the administration, the lord, was an important figure. And he died in the royal palace. They had expected one of the princes to come and pay respect to the dead.

Edward walked to Damon and showed his grief. He whispered a prayer for the deceased duke and threw a pinch of sand on the coffin. Once done, he did not stand alone but walked toward Olivia and stood beside her.

Everyone looked at him with widened eyes to the limit that their eyes were falling from the socket!?

What did it mean? The second prince was with this fallen noble? They all looked petrified by this revealnation. Many looked at Damon impressed. No wonder the man was protecting Olivia.

He was secursing his relationship with the royal family. After all, they had not accepted Damon as one of the courtiers.

Damon watched Edward with an aggrieved smile and then he paid whole attention to the prayers. Everyone waited for a dramatic scene but after Edward’s arrival, the place was oddly silent and dull. As the procedure was about to end and the pastor asked them to give their last words, the footsteps were heard again.

Everyone once again turned to look at the entrance. Their eyes widened and shone with interest when they watched Oriana coming in.

She was still not dressed in black. Her face was gaunt and her hair was dishevelled. Her face looked like she had not washed it for days.

She was walking hurriedly but unsteadily as if she was swaying with the wind and could fall down any moment.

They all looked at her intently, with shock and surprise as she walked in. Damon paused too and smiled at his stepmother. He watched coming closer. Oriana only stopped when she was a step away from Dasmon. Her cold and fierce green eyes were burning with rage.

His eyes flickered and a vicious light reflected in Damon’s eyes. Oriana noticed it before he could hide. Her chest burnt with fury.

"Mother! You are finally awake."

"Slap!" Before he could speak further, a cold slap welcomed him. His cheeks burnt and his hands incticitvely covered his hands.

His face that was red now titled to the right due to the impact. Oriana had used all her strength. Her body shook after the slap.

"How dare you!" she glared at him.

"How dare you talk to me with your filthy mouth. And how dare you arrange the funeral of my husband when you have killed him." she shook with rage as she watched Damon with hatred.

Her hands reached for his neck but before she could grab it, Olivia came forward and held her hands.

"Sister! You are awake." she tried to pull Oriana away as she could feel every eye on her.

As if they all were waiting for good entertainment. The ducal family would lose its strength after getting divided into two fractions. The step mother and the new duke were at odds. She could already hear whisper in their eyes.

She knew Damon had used her to show they were united but Oriana had changed the course again.

Oriana glared at her sister with dark eyes.

"You... let me go this instant." Olivia held tightly instead. She bit her lips but did not let go of Oriana.

"Listen to me! You must pray for his grace before and then we can talk about it."

"You... What will you talk about? Or are you his ally now?"
