Chapter 125: Who Is This Man?

Olivia watched Damon coming with the lord following him closely. Their entrance took everyone’s attention from the corpse. Every single eye in the church was looking at him now.

Everyone was draped in black, even the duke’s corpse. He didn’t look dead. To her, he only seemed to be asleep. Candles were lit around where he lay in the coffin with a serene look on his face. If not for the murmurs and prayers around him, she would have waited for him to open his eyes and glare at them. The man used to be brooding all the time in her memories. Her sister still did not wake up and she was worried.

Why was Oriana in such a shock? She was sure her sister did not love this man. The church was filled with nobles, rich commers and even simple commoners.

The man held an important position in the empire. For many, he was their savior. And Damon was dealing with everyone with a smile on his face.

His eyes were bloodshot as if he had cried all night. His voice was raspy and full of grief. How could he act so well? If she did not know the truth, she would have believed his act too.

Hardly any were hearing the pastor anymore. They all were looking at Damon too. To know their future, plan their next step accordingly. Oriana’s absence would be a biggest disadvantage to her and biggest advantage to him.

"We are shocked by the announcement of death! The lord had been healthy just a few days ago." the man shook his head with grief. "I feel deeply for your loss, your grace. Your father was like a brother to me, if you need help with the estate tasks or planning your coronation, I would love to help." Olivia looked away.

It was still hard to believe how the future changes so drastically! In the past, everyone had looked at him with disgust. A few even dared to call him a murderer during the funeral.

In exchange, he had thrown them all out. He was labelled as a tyrant since then. But now, he looked like the epitome of kindness and suffering.

Even the young girls were feeling pity for him. They sigh looking at his pained face. Olivia wanted to vomit. She did not care how others looked at him as long as she could sort out what he wanted now?

Would he let them live peacefully or he had other plans! But for some reason, her eyes went to him again. She told himself, she was only watching the steps of an enemy.

Perhaps, she was looking at him with such intensity or for a long time. He felt her gaze and turned to look at her. Her breath paused. As if the voices beside her faded. The pastor was not murmuring prayers anymore. The guests were not whispering rumors.

There was no one in the large church except her and him. He stared intently at her before a smile appeared on his lips but it was gone before she could understand its meaning.

Someone called him from the group and he looked away. He nodded at the man and replied in a deep voice. Olivia felt her stomach flip.

She turned to the maids and helped in distributing drinks and informing them about burial.

They all collected near the pit and prayed for his peace while smiling with his murderer. Damon came forward and whispered a few words too. She pushed Leo a bit. The boy looked reluctant, but he went and prayed for his father and Abi followed.

She stood beside the kids, holding their hands and rubbing their backs when needed. She would not let them feel overwhelmed by the strange looks guests were giving them.

"Where is the duchess!?" she heard someone asking aloud when Abi started her prayers.

"She is sick now that she has lost her powers. Her sister is making sure to stand though. Or... she is here to find a new lover! Now that one sister had fallen, the other had to take her place." Olivia stiffened when she heard the remark.

But she did not turn to see who had spoken it. They wanted to create a scene but she would not give them satisfaction by playing along.

"Leave!" a strong voice shook her and Abi who paused and looked behind her with an ashen face.

Olivia inhaled a breath and finally turned to see Damon scowling at count Ruppert. She knew the man. He wanted his daughter to marry Damon for a long time. Cora, the one with midnight hair and brown eyes. She stood beside her father holding his hands tightly while looking afraid of Damon.

"My lord, my father was only upset. He did not mean to offend you." she spoke, biting her lips looking vulnerable.

Many eyes looked at them and then at Olivia, blaming her with their eyes.

"No matter what his condition is.. He could not speak ill about my family and then expect me to entertain him as our guest! Leave or I will call the guards at this moment." he shook with anger.

Olivia gulped a lump in her throat. This man! Who was he? Where did the cold and brutal but honest and straightforward Damon go? She did not recognize him anymore.

"My lord.." the woman bit her lips harder as a tear fell from her eye and glistened on her cheek. Many looked worried for the girl while her father gasped.

"Cora, you do not need to cry!" he assured her and then bowed toward Damon, "my lord, i was worried that predators had already marked on you. I only wish for your welfare. You do not know since you were too young. But we all have witnessed how a fallen noble had seduced a duke. And now, history wants to repeat itself. I must stop it no matter what!" Olivia wanted to laugh hearing his righteous voice. Should she go and announce that she was engaged to the second prince?

"Why...? So that your daughter could repeat the story instead?"

"...."
