Chapter 124: A Storm
Chapter 124: A Storm
"My ears are playing with me now, My lord. This girl must have been a witch. I thought you told me to apologize." Perhaps the man had already realized it, but he was in denial. Even Olivia had a hard time believing in it.
She was only acting like that because she was furious. She had never believed that one of the lords would ever apologize to her. But then, he was indeed wrong and disrespectful. Perhaps apologizing was not that difficult.
She watched his face as he stared at Damon as if waiting for his laughter and denial. A strange pleasure surged through her veins when his gaze only sharpened.
"I am sure a lord like you would not make such a simple mistake. Now hurry up and do it." The man was at a loss for words. He had never apologized to a woman. Much less a fallen noble who did not hold much power.
He would not do it! He could not do it. He started at the ground as if the tapestry was a rare item he was fascinated with.
The tension in the room thinning the air. Olivia took a deep breath.
"It is alright, your grace. I do not need an apology! Words had no value after all. People never speak the truth anyways." Benard finally smiled. At least, the woman knew her position. But what was wrong with the lord?
He could not help but feel that the lord was protecting his enemy by helping Olivia. Did he not know who was on his side? The man felt resentment.
"Very well, then as the compensation of his rudeness, the lord would offer you his ring." Damon pointed at the large pink diamond. "He wanted to pay you for your help from the start. Right, lord Benard." the man wanted to nod. It was true he wanted to pay for Olivia.
But he had never thought to spend so much. The ring was a rare jewel and a family heirloom. He could not part with it.
"Anything except this one." he tried to hide the ring behind her making Damon frown finally.
Before they knew, Damon was already standing in front of the man.
"You have learned disobedience, lord Benard. I could not keep a man like you around me." he clapped his hands and before Benard could understand what exactly happened, he found himself on the ground. And a sharp force on her shoulder stopped him from standing up again.
"My lord!" The man was baffled. He understood that Olivia held some influence and he didn’t want the royal family to interfere. But was he not going too far for pleasing a girl!? Benard was frustrated, he wanted to stand up.
Olivia watched him. A strange kind of excitement coursed in her nerves with blood as the man struggled but kept kneeling in front of her.
When she raised her head again, Damon was watching her intently. His lips curled into a crooked smile as if he knew her pleasure and teased her for it.
She felt her cheeks burning before she cleared her head and throat.
"I will call the church and arrange for everything, my lord. I hope we will bury the lord tomorrow. Till then, let me confirm that he is resting well." Olivia curtsied and left the room.
Damon finally pulled his hand away. The man gritted his teeth and pushed Damon;s hands at once. He stood there appalled by what happened.
"You are not fit to be the duke," Benard scowled looking at Damon, "if you have to bow your head in front of women and force your allies. What good will you bring for the estate!" they had chosen the wrong person for some small benefit. He would never accept this humiliation and bow his head again.
Damon stared at him amused. He did not stop when Benard left the room with sheer anger. He muttered that he was going to inform other lords and Damon was going to regret it.
Many servants watched Benard leave with a red face. They stared back at the third floor but no one dared to approach Damon anymore. They have heard that the vassal family had supported Damon. A request had already been sent to the royal family. As soon as they would send the consent letter, Damon would be their new duke, their new master.
Never had the royal family refused to give consent without an objection from the family. Since Oriana is still unconscious and Olivia did not hold power, the servants knew it was in vain to keep hopes.
They could already see their bleak future. Olivia regretted lettering her emotions. She didn’t want to argue with Damon. She wanted to work with him. It would be better if she accepted her as his friend.
But she felt like a fool if she returned to the room. So she stayed and did what she was told to do.
She prepared for the funeral. She confirmed the letters sent and checked the attendees list again.
Then she informed the pastor and confirmed his attendance. Before she knew it, it was already last at night.
When she returned to the physician’s room, the kids were already asleep on the sofa. Oriana was still unconscious. Had she always cared about the duke so much?
Olivia did not remember Oriana fainting in her past life.
"What will happen in our future now?" was all Oriana had said before. Her sister was strong and knew how to stay rational all the time. What changed her this time?
She sat beside Oriana and stared at her face. It looks like she was sleeping peacefully.
"The lady would wake up in the morning. Her pulse is already normal and her fever is gone." Olivia nodded but she did not look away from her sister’s face.
Damon was a duke now. How would her sister react when she would wake up? Olivia wanted to prepare herself even though she knew no one could be prepared against a storm.
