Chapter 118: The Next Heir!
Chapter 118: The Next Heir!
Olivia only smiled and did not reply until she had brought them to their chambers. She closed the door, brought her and took out the basin. They filled it with warm water and then wiped their face.
Leo and Abi looked ashen. So she washed them well and changed their clothes one by one. She pulled Leo in front of the mirror and combed his hair.
"Leo, do you want to be the next heir?" she watched his expressions intently in the mirror. But at the same time, she did not gazed at him directly. As if she was only leisurely smiling at him.
Leo bit his lips. The maids had told him he must be the next heir. His mother had repeated the same words hundreds of times.
While Damon always claimed that he would be the next heir. Though he did not say those words directly to him, he always said in his presence so that Leo would be aware of his position.
But none of them had ever left the decision on him. But it was much better, at least he never felt perplexed. Now that he had to decide, he was at loss.
"I do not know." Olivia smiled at him and patted his shoulders, not at all irked that he could not decide his future.
"Leo, you are too young. Even if you want to be the heir, you have to be trained for it first. So in the meantime, Damon is bound to fill that position. But if you claim it and fight for the position of Duke, an internal strife would start. Think about your decision carefully.
The duke is not here to protect you or Abi anymore. Sister is sick too. Your decision would decide our future. But if you choose to fight for the position of duke, I would do anything to get it for you." she did not press him to give it up or accept it.
But she still gave him time and she walked toward Abi and combed her hair.
"When the vassal asks you, you must make a decision. Either you could support Damon or stand against him. Choose it wisely." Olivia opened her mouth again but closed it. She did not want to force Leo for anything. But at the same time she hopes that he would take a right decision.
Leo bit his lips as he stared at himself in the mirror.
"What if I want nothing?" a strange guilt gnawed his chest but Olivia only smiled at him.
"Then I will make sure that you live a happy life. We can buy some herds and live as shepherds in a village or even sell herbs we pick from the mountains. A life where you do not need to follow the rules." she laughed softly.
Leo knew it was just a joke to lighten the mood. But his mind could not help but imagine that life. Would it not be better to live like that!
"What about mother?" Abi asked with a frown. "Mother does not like animals. And she did not like mud too. She would not pick herbs." looking at Abi’s naive frown, Olivia laughed. But her eyes dimmed. A strange pain filled her with gloomy thoughts.
"Then she could rest. We will work for her and earn a lot." she explained, making the girl confused further.
"But my mother already has a lot of money. We can never earn more than her." Leo rolled his eyes and stood up.
Olivia smiled bitterly and nodded.
"Yes, Abi. Then we have a great challenge ahead. We have to earn more than our sister to make her happy." Abi gasped. As if she was asked to walk on the burning coals. Even the thought of earning that much made her exhausted.
She shook her head and then looked at Leo again.
"They will provoke you or even insult you, Leo. but remember you are also the duke son. Either you be the heir or not, you have equal rights on anything and you never had any ill intent to feel guilty. Did you hear me?" The boy held her hand tightly.
For some reason, he did not want to attend the meeting. His legs felt heavy already. He wanted to hide in this room and never go out. But the black mourning clothes on his body told him that he did not have such privilege. Everyone was waiting for him.
And if he became a coward, his mother and aunt would suffer. He wiped the sweaty palms and walked out.
Olivia held his hand tightly when she noticed his ashen face.
"You can always hide behind me, Leo. no one will think of you less. You are just a kid." she explained only to get a frown from him.
"I am still a man. I should protect the lady instead." his voice had a hint of hesitation but Olivia only smiled at him appreciatively.
As they walked away, Olivia felt many gazes on them. The servants were looking at her as if they were looking at their messiah.
Their eyes were full of hopes and pleading. She could hear distinct steps too. The housekeeper and butler were nowhere to be seen.
"Emma, the vassal families." the woman named Emma paused. She looked at the door and then at Olivia as she nodded with a grim face and then signalled at the second floor.
"They have come prepared. They did not even ask for directions or commanded us to inform the duchess, they went straight to the second floor and entered that room." she did not take names as if she was afraid that even the mention of it would scald her tongue.
Olivia watched with a gloomy face toward Damon’s study. He was still hiding many things from her and she did not like this feeling.
"Since the meeting is arranged there, we must not keep the guests waiting." her voice was much calmer than her heart which had reached her throat.
Emma smiled with relief, as she felt Olivia’s strength,
"Yes, good luck, my lady."
