Chapter 117: The Next Heir!

As if they were worried that Olivia would not have enough courage, the housekeeper covered her face with her hands, pretending to be crying.

But she glared at a maid standing behind her. The maid took the signal and ran to the young lord’s room. She brought Abi and Leo with him.

The housekeeper ran to the kids and kneeled on the ground.

"Oh my! Look at the poor lord. His face looked pale in a single day." as if she could not bear the pain, she hugged the child tightly and cried again.

Many maids went closer and cried loudly. As if they have not lost their master but their own husband, their walls were gut wrenching. Olivia shifted on feet. When the kids started crying with the adults, she closed her eyes and sighed.

She knew that they had won this round.

"Alright, I would go with them." she spoke in a helpless voice only then did the housekeeper let Leo go.

But she still held Abi’s hand. The kids looked confused. Their faces had tear stains. They ran to Olivia the moment maids let them go and wrapped their tiny hands around her waist.

"How did father die?" asked Abi in a trembling voice. "Is it true that my elder brother killed him?" she whispers in a low voice, as if she was afraid that Damon would hear her somehow and kill her too.

"Or is it Agatha?" Leo probed as he walked closer! Olivia held them tightly. She didn’t know how to reply to them.

"We do not know yet, tbut the royal palace is investigating. His majesty had promised that he would find the culprit. But I am sure your brother or Agatha would never do it." she tousled their hair and pulled them closer.

The scared kids did not let her go even when the maids had slowly scattered.

The housekeeper stared at Olivia intently. She was waiting for Olivia to badmouth Damon. But when Olivia did not do it, she felt aggrieved.

But she could not show it on her face.

"The kids had not eaten anything since morning. How about I bring some soup for both of them and you too, my lady?" For now, she had to win over Olivia and the kids. Even if she goes and kneels in front of Damon, he would not forgive her. So her best stake was the kids. And Olivia.

Olivia looked at the depressed kids and nodded. The meeting would be a long one. And she had to take Damon’s side while showing that she was on Oriana’s side. It was going to be a tough battle.

"Yes please." The maids were quick to bring food. They could only eat if their master ate. Since the kids and Olivia would eat, they would have their fill too.

Olivia helped Abi on the chair while Leo closely followed.

"Is mother very sick?" asked Abi the moment she sat comfortably. "They said she had lost her mind."

"!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Olivia’s hands froze in mid air and the soup fell on the tablecloth.

Leo did not utter a word, but he watched his aunt closely as if waiting for a reply.

"There is nothing like that. Sister is fine. She is just tired and resting. I am sure she would wake up any moment. So it would be better that you behave until she wakes up. Finish your meal fast, we have many things to do." The kids were stunned to hear her stern voice.

But as they watched Olivia eating herself instead of feeding them, they picked up their spoon red faced and started eating too. For some reason, they were embarrassed.

But the maids were gossiping that Damon had killed their father and he would kill them too if they did not stand against him.

While Damon had accused Agatha. They did not know who to believe. One of them must be lying. They watched their aunt with worry. What if even your aunt did not know? Who should they believe?

"You do not need to worry about things that are not in your control." Olivia sighed and whispered softly with a helpless look on her face. When she noticed most of the maids had left and the houseper went to check on Oriana, she leaned and looked into their eyes

"The duke had many enemies all over the empire. Who knew how many people wanted to kill him. Damon was his son too. I had seen him crying in the royal palace after your grace died. Would a murderer do that?" the kids shook their heads instantly.

In their mind, a murderer was a cold hearted person who did not care about anyone. If Damon was crying, he could not be the murderer!

Then could it be Agatha?

"And Agatha was not in the royal palace? How could she mix poison in his food? For now, do not listen to others. Just remember, your mother needs you more than ever and I need you too. So you have to be strong." they looked at her with determination as they nodded.

"When the head of the vassal families would come later, they would ask many questions. A few will not sit well with you, but you have to endure it. And do not reply to them on your own, I will reply instead. But you have to agree with me no matter what, you can clear your doubts later. Alright?" the kids nodded at once.

At this crucial moment, they could not trust anyone but her aunt. They were sure that Olivia would protect them. Looking at their ashen faces, Olivia felt guilty. She knew that she was being too harsh to them.

The kids still need rest. But she had no choice. The vassal families would not care and if she had to bring them to the meeting, she had to prepare them before they made any mistake that would harm them or her!

"Aunt, who would be the next heir?"
