Chapter 89: Chapter 89 Positive

Nicole sat in her car, her nostrils flaring up like she had run a marathon, her eyes were fixed on the building across the street — Elm Group, standing tall along the busy road.

Her hands gripped the steering wheel, her finger tapping on it, Not out of boredom. But out of pressure. Out of waiting too long for something she couldn’t ignore anymore.

The street was busy as People walked by. Life moved. Not at that moment, she had a lot to do and say to Kingsley Elm who thought he was some Alpha.

Then, the familiar black car pulled into the Elm group, entering the garage. Pretending like nothing was broken and nobody was hurt and they were living a casual life.

Raymond stepped out first in a calm manner. Then, Kingsley, who was sitting in the back seat also followed — slowly, but seemed distracted, checking his phone like he had no idea what was waiting for him. His brows were knotted, and his eyes were unusually deep as if he hadn’t gotten any bit of sleep.

Nicole’s door flew open that instant. She crossed the street fast, fury in her steps, her voice already rising before she reached them.

"Mr Elm, you cruel man!"

Raymond spun around, startled to see Nicole. "Nicole?" He cursed in his head. Seeing how she was vibrating and heading towards them like she was about to commit murder, he knew Nicole was angry and this side of her had been triggered. Typical Nicole Morgan.

Nicole didn’t answer. Just kept coming towards them or rather, Straight for Kingsley.

"You think you can just show up like this? Like everything’s fine? After what you did to my best friend??"

Raymond stepped in, he stretched out his arms and grabbed her by the waist as she pushed forward wildly.

"Nicole, stop — what are you talking about?" Raymond was scared on her behalf. He knew all this was wrong but he couldn’t do anything about it.

"Let go of me, Raymond!! I need to place some senses into your boss’s head!"

Kingsley frowned when he heard that. But he didn’t feel anger like he normally does. Nicole’s visit wasn’t a simple one and from the look of things, she had a lot to say to him and they were related to Jasmine.

"I’m talking about Jasmine!" she shouted again, her voice slicing the air. "If anything happens to her, I swear I’ll drag you to hell myself."

Security guards rushed out, unsure whether to intervene, hovering just close enough to be ready for any further escalation. But Raymond held her tight, firm but gentle, trying to keep her from exploding further.

Kingsley looked stunned, barely able to hide his curiosity. "What happened to Jasmine?" he asked, finally, his voice was low and dripped with concern.

Nicole’s laugh was hollow and bitter. "You don’t get to ask that. You don’t care. You never did."

He opened his mouth like he wanted to explain, to defend himself, to say something that mattered but nothing came out. He just kept staring at Nicole.

"You knew she just underwent some major surgery," Nicole went on, eyes locked on him like fire. "You saw it, and you chose to look the other way. You chose to divorce her knowing damn well the pain it’ll cause her. Didn’t it ever cross your mind that you’d be hurting her??? And now — now you want to act like you’re concerned?"

Raymond’s grip tightened. "Nicole, talk to me. What happened?"

"She trusted him," she hissed at Raymond, eyes never leaving Kingsley. "She trusted this man. But he let her fall, he caused her pain. You all did."

The moment hung in the air. Heavy and thick like a blanket. Kingsley took a step forward, his steps were slow and careful.

"I never want to hurt Jasmine. I love her."

Nicole shook her head as she scoffed loudly.

"Oh yeah, you liar!!. You vanished from her life after handing her that divorce papers. What the hell do you mean by saying that you love her???."

Then she pulled away from Raymond, wiped her face quickly, and turned without another word. Her heels hit the pavement sharp and fast as she walked away, shoulders stiff, every step a scream she didn’t say out loud.

Kingsley just stood there, still frozen, still silent, watching her leave.

Raymond threw Kingsley a look and Kingsley muttered absentmindedly. "Do you also think I did the wrong thing?" He whispered.

Raymond bluntly answered. "While you’re upset, you went about everything the wrong way."

Kingsley threw him a side glance before walking away. His face was tight, his mind spiraling. Since Jasmine left, he hadn’t been himself anymore. Now, Nicole came shouting about how Jasmine was—

"Raymond," Kingsley growled and Raymond hurried after him.

"Boss." He replied when he got near.

"Find out what happened to Jasmine from the men I assigned to keep an eye on her."

"On it, Boss."

Kingsley entered the elevator that took him to the top floor and he silently strode into his office. Once alone, Kingsley slummed on the chair. His vision shook—oh right. His PTSD was slowly taking full shape again. But he wasn’t going back to pills anymore. Maybe his pills were Jasmine but he had somehow pushed her away.

’I should have thought this through again and again.’ Kingsley scolded himself. A raw sense of guilt gripped his heart, squeezing it into dust.

Jasmine blinked again and again as she was stuck between disbelief and shock. But the two red lines still stared back at her.

She was pregnant.

It didn’t feel real. Yet it was right there in her hand, clear as day. She sat slowly on the toilet lid, eyes fixed on the test, as if maybe, just maybe, it would change.

But it didn’t.

And Kingsley was the father.

It has been barely two weeks since the divorce. They hadn’t even healed, hadn’t spoken, hadn’t closed the door properly — and now this. A child.

She didn’t know what to feel. Anger? Fear? Regret? All of it swirled through her chest.

It wasn’t supposed to be the case for them at this point. Her marriage with kingsley was contractual but it has all ended. Why does the baby have to come now??

Everything inside her started to feel heavy. Her heart, her chest, her stomach—everything, and the urge to throw up again crept through her chest.

She wanted to scream but nothing came. She didn’t even have the will to do that and also, she didn’t want to scare the sleeping Hailey.

Then her phone buzzed on the counter. She reached for it slowly. Looked at the screen. Her mother.

She hesitated for a while before she answered the call.

"Hello, Mom."

"Hello, my dear. You sound... off. Are you alright?" Her mother immediately picked on her tone.

Jasmine pressed her hand to her forehead. "I don’t know."

"What’s wrong?"

She didn’t respond at first. She couldn’t. The words felt heavy, too big for her mouth. Then finally—

"I’m pregnant."

Silence followed.

"With Kingsley’s child?"

"Yes." Jasmine massaged her forehead. "He’s the only one I’ve been with, mom."

Another pause. Then her mother exhaled.

"Oh, Jasmine..."

Jasmine stared at the test again, the two lines screaming at her in silence.

"I didn’t plan for this," she said quickly, the words starting to rush out. "It wasn’t supposed to happen, we weren’t even— it was just the few times we did it when we were still married, and— After the divorce, I thought we were done, Mom."

"I know, sweetheart." Her mother said softly.

"I can’t even talk to him, let alone raise a child with him. We were a mess. We are a mess." Jasmine whimpered. Her reality seemed to have been twisting now.

Her mother didn’t speak immediately. Jasmine heard a small shuffle — the sound of her sitting down, maybe at the kitchen table.

"Do you want to keep the baby?" she asked gently.

"I don’t know." Jasmine wiped her face with the back of her hand. "I haven’t even had time to think that far. I just saw the test and I panicked. I called no one. You’re the first person I told."

"I’m glad you told me." Her mother sighed deeply.

"I feel like such an idiot."

"You’re not an idiot. You’re human."

"I should’ve been smarter. More careful. How did I let this happen?" Her hands ran across her hair, tangling them in the process. Nicole had been right. Men were not reliable.

"Do you want me to come over?" her mother offered. "I’ll bring something to eat, we can talk properly."

"No. No, I just— I need a minute to think. I need space."

"Okay. But listen to me." Her mother’s voice firmed up a little. "Come for dinner tomorrow. Your father wants to talk to you. There’s something important he needs to share."

"Important? What kind of important?"

"I don’t want to spoil it. It’s better coming from him. Just be here, alright? Seven o’clock."

Jasmine rubbed her temple. "Is it bad news?"

Her mother hesitated. "Errm, I don’t know but lately, your father has been acting weird and he said something bad is about to happen. I’m not sure." Her mother let out a dry laugh. "I don’t want to exaggerate it. Just come over."

"I’m stuck. And I suck." Jasmine whined.

"You’re not stuck and you don’t suck dear," her mother said, with more certainty now. "You’re overwhelmed. And scared. But not stuck. And not alone. Come home tomorrow, eat something, hear what your father has to say. And then we can talk about the baby. About Kingsley. About everything."

Jasmine leaned back against the wall and closed her eyes. Her grip on the test loosened.

"Okay," she whispered. "I’ll come."

"Good girl. I’ll make your favorite stew. And no more Googling symptoms or stressing alone, alright?"

"Alright."

"Tomorrow’s a new day. Get some rest, my love."

"Love you, Mom."

"Love you too." After that, the call ended.

Jasmine sat there in silence, the phone in one hand, the test in the other. Still shaken and still scared. But for the first time in an hour, she wasn’t spiraling. She was a little less alone.

Tomorrow will come.

And maybe that would be enough — for now.
