Chapter 88: Chapter 88 Men Can Be Unreliable
The next few days went in a blur for Jasmine. She couldn’t comprehend how she spent every day. She was always in and out of the office. From Nicole’s apartment to the office and from the office to Nicole’s apartment.
She got no calls or texts from Kingsley. He was doing ’great’ without her.
Her mom had called because apparently—they’d been informed. I mean, who doesn’t know??
The news of their divorce after Jack’s downfall was out in the public. Jasmine’s finger lacked the presence of a ring so some reporters found some juicy gossip from it.
She received weird gazes from people but that was the least of her concerns. Her major concern was how to get better. How to heal from the emotional damage and also heal from this—fever, maybe.
For days, she had been feeling nauseous and sick. She lost her appetite and the sickening feelings that kept crawling up her chest were too much.
Nicole sighed as she stared at Jasmine who was helping Hailey braid her hair. The two women now seemed like co-parents. Jasmine would have easily rented her own apartment from her salary but Nicole somehow changed her mind about it. Coupled with the fact that she was ill a little too. It was enough reason to stay where others could keep an eye on her.
"You shouldn’t be stressing out," Nicole said as she munched on the popcorn while watching TV.
Jasmine winced a little. "I’m not handicapped. Just a little feverish." She smirked when she saw the braids she had made. If that was the only thing she knew how to do aside from working behind a desk all day long. It somehow compensated for her lack of cooking abilities. "I’ll be fine." She muttered.
Silence reigned, just the sounds from the TV echoed in the room. Hailey asked questions regarding the movie which makes Nicole sometimes snap.
Jasmine was done with the braiding, she chuckled in excitement. "All done now." She whistled. It was just one of the moments where she was genuinely happy or rather—it was her trying to press a sickening feeling down her chest.
"I’ll go get some milk." Jasmine exclaimed as she abruptly stood up from the couch which she regretted the next minute. Her world seemed to have taken a drastic turn, it spun. She staggered backward, almost falling off.
Nicole and Hailey were immediately alarmed. They rushed towards her to steady her.
"Oh my god..." Nicole gasped. "You can’t stay here all day and I watch you like this."
"I’m—I’m fine," Jasmine said but that slight dizziness was revolving in her head.
"No, you’re not. Let’s take you to the hospital. It’s non-negotiable." Nicole said sternly.
Jasmine couldn’t refute this time around. She couldn’t hide the fact that she had been sick. It was unsettling even during work hours, she kept feeling weak and dizzy.
Now was the moment she needed her kingsley. He knew how well to treat her right when she was ill. But now—times have changed. And it made a round of sadness wash over Jasmine.
Without knowing, she began to shed tears, startling Nicole. "What-what’s wrong?? Jasmine, talk to me." She held Jasmine’s arm while Hailey went to grab some tissues for her.
Jasmine couldn’t even explain this behavior, she shook her head but the tears were coming down nonstop. "He’s so mean. He didn’t even call to check up on me."
Nicole took a single glance at Jasmine. Her brows joined. Jasmine wasn’t really a crybaby—even though she was hurt and probably crying now because she somehow started to realize how much of a cockroach her husband was. But—this whole reaction as if her hormones were high. The morning sickness, throw-up, dizziness, now—high hormones.
Nicole shook her head as if she couldn’t believe what she came up with in her head. "Jasmine..." she whispered.
Jasmine wiped her tears. Her voice is a little cranky. "I can live without him, Nicole. I can."
Nicole held Jasmine’s chin to make her look in her direction. "Jasmine..."
"You don’t need to pity me, I—"
"You’re pregnant." Nicole cut off Jasmine’s blabbering.
Jasmine widened her eyes, then she inclined her head to the side. "You can’t just assume stuff like that."
"Have you been having unprotected sex with your now ex-husband??" Nicole gushed out in disbelief.
Jasmine paused. Not sure if any of the things Nicole was saying were making sense to her. "We had unprotected sex when we were still married. Not like I sneaked out to have sex with him now."
Nicole sighed. "That explains the whole morning sickness, dizziness, high hormones, and lost of appetite."
Jasmine placed a hand on her belly, "I’m not sure that’s the case."
"Oh well...there’s only one way to find out." Nicole hinted at a pregnancy test. "I have some pregnancy kits in my bag. I’ll give you one to go take a test." Nicole let go of Jasmine’s arm and went to grab her coat.
"Where are you going??" Jasmine asked. Her heart was slamming loudly against her ears. She hoped she wasn’t pregnant. Not for Kingsley—even though Kingsley was the only man she’d been having sex with for a long time. But they are divorced now.
And from the look of things, she had probably been shifted into Kingsley’s black book. He ’hates’ her now.
"Going to take care of something," Nicole said and instructed Hailey. "Hailey, you should go upstairs to have your afternoon nap."
"Okay, mom." Hailey obediently walked out of there. "Aunt Jasmine, be fine soon." She whispered to Jasmine before leaving.
Nicole entered her room, leaving the still-stunned Jasmine in the living room to wander in her thoughts.
Nicole came out and Jasmine turned to face her, almost choking her with questions. "For real, you can’t just make such assumptions. What if all this is just me reacting to the divorce?? Maybe, I’m fine but a little under the weather. You can’t really scare me like this, you know." Her voice trailed off.
Nicole placed the pregnancy kit on her palm. Her eyes landed on it and that instant, cold sweat formed on her back, soaking her shirt.
"Then, go check it out if it’s true," Nicole said flatly. Jasmine’s shoulder slumped.
"I don’t want to bring a baby into this, Nicole." Jasmine’s voice was much calmer now. Her eyes almost brimming hot with tears.
"I know. But men can’t really be reliable." Nicole hugged Jasmine. Her eyes turned red in anger. "And I won’t watch you suffer this alone like I did." It was like a silent promise to her best friend.
Jasmine quickly pulled away. "Do not do anything stupid, Nicole." She warned.
Nicole let out a laugh to wave off the question. "Of course, Nahh. I just need to go get something." She rushed towards the door.
"I’m serious about this, Nicole," Jasmine shouted from behind her but Nicole was gone. Probably ready to kick some ass. Or getting kicked in the ass.
Now alone in the living room, Jasmine fought back some hot tears as she stared at the pregnancy kit. She stood there conflicted, muttering a silent prayer that it came out negative. She was in a lot of mess already and the last thing she needed was a baby.
