Chapter 52: Chapter 52 Be My Daddy!!

Nicole trembled slightly as she wore her jacket, her hair was messy, and her dull eyes stared at herself in the mirror.

Hailey stood close to her, holding a cloak. After Nicole wore her jacket, Hailey handed her the cloak. "Thank you, baby." Nicole appraised in a slow and low voice, and then a cough erupted from her mouth, making her head bang even more.

Nicole couldn’t even move her head too much cause of the splitting headache. Her legs were hurting and unable to hold onto her weight for too long.

"Is the uncle still coming to get you??" Hailey asked and Nicole paused in her movements. The cloak was halfway around her neck, her eyes stilled.

Hailey waited for a reply which she got after Nicole found her voice. "Umm, I guess so." Then, she continued wrapping the cloak around her neck.

Once done, she turned around to face Hailey who was wearing black pants, a white shirt, and a white fluffy cap on her blonde hair. Hailey looked concerned, inspecting her mother to make sure she was all covered up.

"You don’t wanna arrange your hair?? It’s a little too—unkept." Hailey said. Nicole’s shoulders dropped in defeat, wishing she could leave it that way.

"My scalp will burn if I brush it..." Nicole made an excuse to leave her hair that way. She didn’t want to comb it, she lacked that extra strength to do anything else.

"You know what?? Just sit, I’ll help you with that." Hailey offered.

Nicole swallowed her complaint, not wanting to seem like a kid to her child. Hailey dragged out the chair close to the dressing table and Nicole sat on it.

Her eyes were looking at herself in the mirror, a warm feeling enveloped her as Hailey used her small hands to arrange her tangled hair.

Emotional??

Hell yeah, Nicole was so emotional that it brought tears to her eyes.

"Mom, does it hurt?? I can stop.." Hailey was immediately alarmed by the sudden change. Her hands stopped brushing Nicole’s hair.

Nicole wiped her tears with her palm, coughing slightly before shaking her head. "No, baby. It doesn’t hurt." Her nose and eyes were red, her watery eyes staring at Hailey through the mirror. "Keep brushing mommy’s hair." Her voice was thick with emotions.

Remembering what had happened six years ago, when she was pregnant with Hailey...Not getting rid of her baby was her greatest joy.

Thinking back to the numerous times she had thought of aborting the baby, a lot was at stake. Her education, her career, and then there’s her Christian family who doesn’t want unwanted kids in their house. Nicole had been torn between what to do. Because of the pregnancy, she was disowned and mocked.

But Jasmine....

At the thought of Jasmine again, a single tear left Nicole’s eyes. She had a lot to be thankful for. Jasmine was the only person who made her see otherwise, now...her baby girl was taking care of her.

It was mid-November, but Nicole was cold, definitely had a fever. Hailey was so focused on tidying the hair and once done, she smiled in satisfaction. "All done now, mama."

Nicole smiled, her emotions were at bay as she gazed at how nice her blonde hair was now. "You did an amazing job."

After that, Nicole made her way to the living room, with calculating footsteps, and her urge to cough rolled up again. Hailey was holding her bag as they went to the living room to wait for the uncle who would come pick them up.

Nicole didn’t want to think of anything else, her splitting headache was enough to keep her occupied. She overruled the thought that it was Raymond coming. It was Raymond that was the uncle coming to take her to the hospital. And honestly, she wished to bury herself under the soil but she wouldn’t.

Just like Jasmine said, Hailey needs a healthy mother. And Jasmine also needs a healthy friend.

Nicole settled on the couch in the living room, her eyes shutting on their own. Too weak, too exhausted and the headache made her eyes ache. Nicole curled up on the couch, taking a short rest.

Hailey dropped the bag close to Nicole’s couch and sat on the other couch, watching her mother sleep.

They stayed like that for a couple more minutes before a car started blaring its horn outside. Hailey stood up from the couch and went to the window, just like her mother had cautioned her to do.

She peeked through the window and gasped a little when she spotted a black Bentley outside their house, parked on the side of the road. A handsome man got out of the car making her eyes grow wide.

’The uncle from the airport!!’ Hailey screamed in her eyes in excitement, her eyes bulging out of their sockets as the man started to come near.

Hailey left the window and rushed towards the door. The doorbell rang, snapping Nicole out of her sleep, her eyes flew open instantly.

Hailey was in all smiles as she flung the door open, meeting face to-face with Raymond.

Raymond dimmed his eyes when he saw the familiar blonde girl. Her eyes were too captivating for him to forget so soon.

"You..." Raymond was puzzled. Thinking he maybe went to the wrong house because the lady he brought over to this house was looking....young and...

"Uncle." Hailey giggled. "Remember me??"

Raymond opened his lips to speak but shut it when Nicole appeared from behind the door. Their eyes immediately locked and Raymond gasped.

He widened his eyes but Nicole blinked before averting her gaze. She instructed Hailey instead. "Go get the backpack so we can leave, Hailey."

"Okay, mommy." Hailey hurried back to go get the bag.

’Mommy??’ The words resounded in Raymond’s head, his face growing pale, and his lips were undeniably opened as he stared at Nicole.

The woman he used to love, or maybe...still loves.

The lady who left him behind and made him wonder where she was. Made him wonder if he did something wrong and made him drown in alcohol for months.

His eyes went from her blonde hair, the hair he used to interlock his fingers on, tangling them. His gaze fell to her body and honestly...she looked even mouth watery now.

Nicole could feel the burning gaze on her and she shifted in discomfort. Knowing damn well what he was thinking but she wasn’t down for that. "Want to step aside?"

Her words made Raymond blink before taking a step away from the door. He tried to process his emotions and seeing how cool Nicole was playing it, anger surfaced in his heart.

’She doesn’t look remorseful. She gave birth to a daughter and she doesn’t bother to explain things to me!’ Raymond felt aggrieved. He took another step away from the door and turned his back, heading to his car.

He clenched and unclenched his fists, his anger made his body shake as he matched towards the Bentley.

He got near and rested his back on the car, watching in anger as Nicole locked the door while Hailey was telling her something. The two blondes were having a rather good time as they walked towards him.

He was staring at them, should he be happy?? He was happy for Nicole. He was relieved that she was okay. All these years he had always wondered what happened to her, but seeing how healthy she was...he was relieved.

But that didn’t stop the pang of jealousy that tasted like spoilt beans.

"Uncle, I had no idea you knew my mom." Hailey acknowledged when they came near.

Nicole moved over to the side, Raymond’s eyes followed her briefly before turning to look at Hailey. Not sure if to act okay around her or not. She was the daughter of another man the woman he loved gave birth to. However, Raymond nodded. "I just discovered that she’s the best friend of my Boss’s wife. So..." he looked at Nicole who was looking everywhere else but him. He added. "I don’t know your mom. I am just doing my job."

Nicole’s shoulder stiffened, and her lower lips got caught between her teeth. Unable to bear it anymore, she busted out. "Please, sir. Can we go already?" She adjusted uncomfortably.

Raymond threw her a weird look she couldn’t describe before opening the back door for them. Nicole went in and Hailey followed.

Once they’re all settled in, Raymond started the car’s engine and drove off. His grip on the wheels were tight, thinking that Nicole probably just arrived in the country and living large and now, sitting in the back seat of his car....Raymond’s mood just keeps decreasing.

As he drove, he wished Hailey wasn’t in the car. He wished it was just him and Nicole. He had a lot to do to her, a lot to say to her...but he couldn’t because Hailey wouldn’t stop talking to him, bursting into his thoughts again and again.

"So, uncle. Are you married? Engaged?? Any girlfriend? Single?"

Nicole glared at Hailey and snapped. "Enough, Hailey."

Raymond didn’t mind. "I am single."

Hailey clapped her hand, smiling. "Great! Because my mother is also single even though she has me. I was wondering if you could get married to my mom instead and be my dad!!"

Nicole coughed and Raymond slammed on the brakes too fiercely, earning an ear piercing screeching from the tyres. They didn’t expect that. Raymond’s and Nicole’s eyes were really wide as they both exclaimed simultaneously. "What??"
