Chapter 49: Chapter 49 Atonement

With an unblinking stare, Jasmine stood rooted to the floor, her lips were slightly parted in shock.

Kingsley didn’t stop there, his blood boiling over. "I warned you to stay the fuck out of trouble but you never seem to listen. Do you?!"

Jasmine opened her lips to argue when she finally found her voice. "It wasn’t intentional and—"

Kingsley sarcastically cut in on her words. "Of course, it wasn’t. If you were in this house, would you have been involved with that scumbag whose hands were all over you a few minutes ago??" His eyes flashed in anger, his veins popped up on his throat as he glared down at Jasmine as if she were his prey.

"It’s my body, Kingsley." Jasmine retorted. She started to get pissed by Kingsley’s annoyance towards her. Fine, he saved her but growling at her like this??

’Unacceptable!’

Kingsley’s eyes sank even more, he took a step towards Jasmine, leaned closer, and snapped, making sure his words sank into Jasmine’s head. "You are my wife, Jasmine."

"Contract wife." She reminded.

A flash of disbelief crossed Kingsley’s eyes as he paused momentarily but that look left his face in a blur.

Kingsley’s eyes lingered on Jasmine’s face for a while, clenching and unclenching his fists before he spun and left Jasmine standing there.

He didn’t utter any more words, heading towards his room. Afraid that staying a few more seconds will make him go insane. His hands fought with his tie as he went to his room. His mood sour.

Kingsley kicked open his room door and went in. He was unsettlingly too quiet—all just to tame his burning rage.

Meanwhile, Jasmine stood there close to the stairs, her jaw clenched so that her fists were balled tightly until her knuckles turned white.

Her eyes tinged, her emotions catching up with her but she remained stiff there—not blinking, just rather too calm. Suppressing her cry as she stood there.

The argument that ensued between her and kingsley began to replay in her head and it got her even more upset.

A single teardrop left her eyes before she wiped it off. Her lips pressed tightly together. Looking down, Jasmine took off her red heels and held them.

Instead of climbing the stairs to her bedroom, she turned around, heading to the exit door. But she didn’t make it to the door when a wave of dizziness hit her...a sharp pain rushed to her head, making her stop in her tracks, her shoes and purse falling off her hand.

Jasmine’s face twisted as the pain consumed her, she grabbed onto her head, pressing hard on her head as if that would reduce the pounding ache.

Low whimpers and painful grunts escaped her lips as she staggered backward.

The pain didn’t fade, the nausea reached up to her chest and her legs gave out. Jasmine went limp as she fell to the ground. A pain that paled in comparison to the one she was feeling in her head, spread when her body hit the cold floor.

Jasmine tried to keep her eyes open but the fatigue wrapped around her. She couldn’t find her voice anymore as she lay helplessly on the floor. Her legs were seemingly paralyzed as she lay there. The dizziness became stronger and her weak body gave in finally.

Her heavy eyelids shut on their will, and her consciousness slipped away.

Beep! Beep!! Beep!!

The beeping sound filtered into Jasmine’s head, disturbing her sleep and her brows creased tightly.

Voices flooded around her and she couldn’t make out who was talking. A dull pain lingered on her forehead but the dryness of her throat burned.

Water.

She needed to get water, slowly, her eyes teared open, but she quickly shut them when the blinding rays of light hit her eyes.

"She’s awake now."

That voice came, a tone she won’t forget in a hurry. Jasmine slammed her eyes open that second and truly, he was standing there—looking at her but his appearance shocked her a little.

For once in her life, she got to see kingsley looking disheveled. His hair was messy as if he ran his hand along it too many times. He had no tie on, the few upper buttons were undone—

But, he still looked sexily handsome even in this disheveled state.

Jasmine didn’t get the time to salivate when Doctor Williams blocked her line of vision and a low grunt escaped her lips in displeasure.

Mr Williams had a friendly smile on his face as he said to her. "You’re awake. Thank goodness because your husband was about to go insane.."

Kingsley groaned from behind. "Doctor Williams..." he stretched but that was enough for Mr Williams to not say anything related to how he was groveling beside her bed, asking her to wake up.

Jasmine was surprised by what Doctor Williams had said, her gaze shifted to Kingsley who was leaning on the wall close to the window.

When their gaze met, Kingsley shifted in his standing position in discomfort before looking away. Maybe, afraid she might see the truth in his eyes.

Jasmine masked her smile thoroughly before gesturing to the water close by. Kingsley who was seemingly looking away took notice and dashed to get the water for her.

After filling the cup, he handed it over to her. An IV drip was connected to Jasmine’s wrist, tailing along as she drank the whole content in the cup.

"Thank you." She managed to let out and Kingsley hummed in response.

Doctor Williams jotted something on his notepad before turning to face Jasmine again. "It’s good that you’re hydrated now. Want to keep resting for a while?"

Jasmine shook her head, a small nagging pain soon came, making her wince a little. "How long have I been out?"

"Two days." This time, Kingsley was the one who answered and Jasmine gasped out in pure disbelief.

Doctor Williams nodded before asking again. "Would you like to share with me how you’re feeling at the moment?"

Jasmine remained silent, shutting her eyes to suppress the worsening headache. It got to a point and she let out a painful whimper.

Kingsley immediately panicked as he left the wall and came close to her bed, his eyes sprung wide as he stared at her.

"My head..." Jasmine cried lowly and Doctor Williams started to write something on his notepad again.

Impatient kingsley snapped at Doctor Williams in a low voice. "Can. You. Stop. Writing?? Do. Something!!." He dragged out, and his words came out with a bunch of threats that were there but still not there.

Doctor Williams tapped on the bed close to Jasmine. "Mrs Elm, can you hear me?"

Jasmine’s face was red as she rushed out amidst pain. "My legs feel numb, my head hurts, I can’t—I can’t...." Jasmine trailed off when the pain hit again. "I think it’s the Meningioma."

"The Meningioma."

Jasmine and the doctor said at the same time, Kingsley quickly closed his mouth with his left hand. "Oh fuck." He cursed in a low tone.

Doctor Williams stood up from the stool he had been sitting on close to her bed. "Mrs Elm. You need urgent surgery." He declared.

Kingsley quickly interjected. "Firstly make the ache go away. She’s in pain right now."

Doctor William tried to calm him down. "Drugs will be administered to her but the surgery can’t be denied."

Running his hand through his hair again,Kingsley questioned. "After the surgery, she’ll be fine, yeah??" He grabbed Doctor Williams’s coat. His eyes searching for answers, hope swirling in the depth of his eyes.

Doctor William sighed and Kingsley’s face fell as he loosened his grip on the coat. The sighing wasn’t something he wanted or expected to hear.

"I think it will go a long way but the possibilities of it not growing again are slim."

Kingsley’s eyes darted to Jasmine who was tearing up on the bed, he felt like he was being strangled. Turning to face Doctor Williams, kingsley pointed his forefinger at him as he gritted out. "Look, I know the amount of money donated here every single year so I know that this hospital is one of the best, if not the best hospital in Los Angeles. You have to do everything possible and impossible to make sure Jasmine is alright and that damn Meningioma is totally off her system."

Doctor Wiliam became tongue-tied, but he nodded either way before leaving.

Alone with Jasmine, Kingsley didn’t know what to do next. Hug her? Will that relieve her pain?

"It hurts." Jasmine whimpered from the bed, her headache made her eyes tear up even more.

Kingsley was suddenly helpless as he came near, debating if his touch would hurt her or not.

Jasmine sniffed her snot and Kingsley resigned to fate as he sat down close to her, his arms protectively wrapped around her back before pulling her close.

Soaked in Kingsley’s manly cologne, the familiar scent filling her senses, Jasmine instinctively pressed her head against his nape, allowing him hug her as she wept in his arms.

Kingsley kissed the top of her head, caressing her back. "I’m sorry, Wifey. I’m sorry—" he repeated, hating and blaming himself for snapping at her last night. He thought he stressed her, triggering her meningioma. He should have been careful and not—

It was too late to regret so he started to atone for his mistakes. The last thing he would want was for her to suffer. He should have done things differently, kept his complaints to himself, and not scold his wife.

"I’m sorry.." he whispered again, Jasmine’s tensed muscles soon started to relax slowly, and her headache slowly faded as tiredness swept in. Soon, she fell asleep in his arms with him patting her back.

As she slept, guilt and many other emotions surfaced on Kingsley’s face...the emotion that stood out more was fear. Fear of losing someone dear to him and in the last few weeks—He realized that Jasmine was someone dear to him.
