Chapter 101 Let Me Be In Your Life
Chapter 101: Chapter 101 Let Me Be In Your Life
Nicole sat on the edge of the hospital bed, gently rocking the baby in her arms. Jasmine was seemingly lost in thoughts.
"I know what Kingsley will do once he finds out," Jasmine said quietly.
Nicole glanced at her. "Do what?"
"He’ll take her away from me," Jasmine replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "He’ll think I kept her from him. And with the way things are between us... with the divorce and everything... I just know he’ll try to take her."
Nicole sighed and looked down at the baby. "You think Kingsley wants to take a newborn baby and raise her alone? Come on, Jasmine."
Jasmine turned her face to Nicole. "You don’t get it. He’s cold. He’s angry with me. And he has every right to be."
Nicole shook her head slowly. "No. I don’t like him, you know that. But I also know how much he liked you. He still does. You should’ve seen him throwing up in the bathroom like a man who’s never seen pain before."
Jasmine’s eyes flickered with confusion. "He was throwing up?"
"Like crazy. He was crying too, Jasmine. Not like full-blown sobbing, but he looked wrecked. He was scared for you."
Jasmine looked away again. "Still doesn’t mean he won’t try to take her. You don’t know what he’s capable of when he’s hurt."
Nicole leaned closer, her voice turned more serious. "You know what would hurt him the most? Being shut out. You put his name on the certificate and not tell him... that’s what cuts deep. But I don’t think he’s the kind of man who’ll snatch a baby and disappear."
Jasmine pressed her lips together. "I’m just scared."
Nicole stood up and laid the baby gently in the small crib beside the bed. "Then tell him that. Talk to him. You owe him that much."
Just then, the door creaked open. Kingsley stepped in with a bunch of fruit baskets and small gift bags. His eyes moved across the room before settling on Jasmine. He walked over to the side table and dropped everything there without a word.
Nicole picked up her bag and looked at both of them. "I’ll need to go. Hailey would be back from school any moment."
She walked out quietly, leaving behind an awkward silence.
Kingsley stood there for a moment, unsure of what to say. Then he walked slowly toward the crib. His eyes softened when he saw the tiny baby wrapped in a pink blanket. Her little hands were closed in fists, and she was fast asleep, her breathing was steady and peaceful.
"She’s so small," he murmured. "She doesn’t have any hair yet."
Jasmine didn’t say anything. She stared at him, her throat tight, her heart racing. She didn’t know what this meant. She didn’t know what would happen next. But she knew one thing — she wasn’t leaving her baby with anyone. Not even him.
Kingsley turned to her slowly. "I know."
Jasmine’s brows pulled together. "Know what?"
"I saw the certificate. You put my name. I’m the father."
Jasmine looked away, jaw clenched. "Yeah. I did."
"Why didn’t you tell me?" Kingsley asked. His voice wasn’t angry. Just... tired.
Jasmine let out a small hiss. "Because you hate my dad. And you left me. You divorced me. What made you think I’d tell you about my baby? So you could show up and pretend everything’s okay and just take her from me?"
Kingsley blinked, visibly stunned by her words. "Take her from you? Jasmine, I never said anything about that. That was never the plan."
"Then what is your plan?" she asked sharply. "What do you want from me now?"
Kingsley took a deep breath and stepped a little closer. "I want us to fix this. I want you and the baby to move in with me. We start over. Get married again. Forget everything else."
Jasmine looked at him like she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. "You want to just forget everything? Just like that?"
"I’m willing to try," Kingsley said quietly. "We can do this. Together."
Jasmine shook her head slowly, tears forming in her eyes. "I can’t. I’m not ready. Every time I look at you, I remember what my father did. What it cost your family. How it tore us apart."
Kingsley’s jaw tightened. He ran a hand through his hair. "Your father isn’t you. I never blamed you."
"But I still carry it," she said. "Even if you don’t say it, I feel it."
He walked back to the crib and looked down at the baby again. "She deserves both of us, Jasmine. Whatever happened before... she didn’t ask for it. She deserves a home."
Jasmine swallowed hard. "I know."
Kingsley turned and looked at her, his eyes full of something deep and unreadable. "Then let’s start from there. No pressure. Just... let me be in her life. Let me be in yours. Even if it’s slow."
Her lips parted like she wanted to speak, but no words came out.
Just then, the door opened. Raymond walked in with a calm expression. He nodded politely at Jasmine and gave her a short smile. Then he reached into a small paper bag he was holding and placed a box on the table.
"Gift for the baby," he smiled warmly at her.
Jasmine smiled at him. "Thank you."
Raymond turned toward Kingsley and leaned close. "We need to talk. Outside."
Kingsley frowned. "What’s going on?"
Raymond’s voice dropped. "The lab called. They found glue traces on the shooters. They’re from the Elite Fraternity."
Kingsley’s whole body stiffened. His jaw clenched as he slowly turned back toward Jasmine. Her hand was resting gently on the baby’s blanket, not looking at him and Raymond.
"They found glue on the guys that fired the shots," Kingsley said. "They’re from Elite."
Jasmine blinked, her brows furrowed, but she said nothing.
Raymond added, almost like a whisper, "They’re probably dropping warnings. First small shots. The real attack might be coming."
Kingsley took one more look at the baby in the crib before exhaling deeply.
"We’ll be back," he said and walked out of the room with Raymond.
As they turned the corner, they almost walked into Moore Trevor.
He was standing there in his long coat, one hand behind his back, the other resting on his cane.
"Kingsley," the older man said with a firm voice. "We need to speak."
Kingsley narrowed his eyes. "Now’s not a good time."
"I think you’ll want to hear this," Moore replied, raising his chin slightly. "It’s about the Elite Fraternity."
Kingsley paused. He looked at Raymond, then back at Moore. "What about them?" he asked.
Moore glanced around the hallway. "Not here," Moore said calmly. "Let’s go somewhere quiet."
Kingsley had no idea what his ex-father-in-law could possibly know about the Elite. But the look on Moore’s face was serious.
Kingsley nodded slowly. "Fine. Lead the way."
Moore turned without another word, walking toward the far end of the corridor.
Raymond leaned close to Kingsley and whispered, "What the hell does he know?"
Kingsley shook his head. "I don’t know. But we’re about to find out."
And they followed Moore down the hallway, both men were tense, unsure of what was coming but knowing whatever it was, it wouldn’t be small.
