Chapter 1429: Chapter 1401: Slam, Slam to Death
Considering it was a funeral, Mario Yuno suppressed his anger and didn’t blow up right away.
“Speak your business, and don’t pull irrelevant things into this.”
“Let Kiara come down, we want to ask her! Third brother just passed away like that, and she didn’t even dress him in mourning clothes, what was the use of raising her all these years!”
Uncle shouted at the top of his lungs.
Kiara was about to get out of the car when Yuzo Joel held the car door.
“If a dog bites you, are you going to bite the dog back?”
Kiara sat back down.
“These people are just trying to take advantage. Aren’t you falling into their trap by getting angry with them now?”
Kiara closed her eyes and muttered, “So annoying.”
Flies are everywhere, buzzing around, standing on their moral high ground to bite others, disgusting.
“Look on the bright side, just treat them like clowns jumping around to amuse you. If you don’t take them seriously, they can’t bother you.”
Kiara looked at Yuzo Joel and felt much calmer in her heart.
Below the car, Mario Yuno’s patience was almost spent.
“You’re not fit to talk to my daughter-in-law. If you’ve got something to say, say it to me. What are you yapping here for? My daughter-in-law not wearing mourning clothes? Is that any of your business?”
“We’ve raised an ungrateful wretch for so many years. Do you dare go out and let everyone judge the matter, let them see your evil faces, you rich people! Marrying into a wealthy family and then disowning your father, huh? Won’t people laugh their heads off if this gets out!”
Uncle finished his righteous spiel, and everyone else nodded in agreement, as if Kiara had committed a great and terrible crime.
Mario Yuno, upon hearing this, laughed angrily.
“Mourning clothes? It’s a favor if my daughter-in-law wears them, and it’s her right not to. When he was alive, he came at her with a knife, and if we hadn’t arrived in time, my daughter-in-law would’ve been dead along with her unborn child. By then, even if you peeled off human skin to make mourning clothes, it would’ve been too late!”
His words were logical and well-argued, causing Uncle’s gaze to flicker. Second Uncle, who was good at speaking, quickly stood up to add his two cents.
“You can’t say it like that. When Third brother did that, he wasn’t in his right mind. Now that he’s gone, as his offspring, she should fulfill her duties as a child.”
“Duties? And you all have done your duties?” Mario Yuno scornfully swept his gaze around the group.
“Nonsense! All of us as his brothers and sisters-in-law knew to send Third brother off, wearing mourning bands and weeping, yet she did less than us!”
“Exactly, it was a waste to raise such a daughter!”
“Even a dog you raise would bark at you!”
Kiara watched through the glass, with cold eyes, as these people made a scene, and Yuzo Joel gave a precise critique.
“When a person wants to benefit from another, they must first occupy the moral high ground.”
As if responding to his comment, Second Aunt, unable to hold back any longer, finally revealed the crux of the issue.
“The house and money from the last demolition were not distributed fairly to begin with. Now that Third brother is gone, you haven’t held a proper wake or shed a tear; you’re not qualified to take that money with you. It must be turned over; it belongs to our family, you don’t deserve it! Moreover, the old house back in the countryside is in Third brother’s name, and that needs to be properly addressed as well!”
“Right, you and your brother are hardly ever here, so who will look after Third brother’s grave during the holidays? Since you don’t consider him your real father, we won’t recognize you either. Based on your actions today, we should take this to the neighborhood committee to settle the dispute!”
“Yes!”
“That’s right!”
A ragtag bunch was loudly clamoring until Mario Yuno’s patience finally ran out.
He bellowed.
“Enough! All of you, shut up!”
His voice still carried quite a bit of authority, and these people fell silent.
“I get it now, you all came here waving the flag of morality, but it’s really just about the money, isn’t it?”
The part about the demolition compensation was lost, as everyone knew it was probably impossible to get back–the court had ruled on that. So today, they took the absence of mourning clothes as a pretext, aiming for the old house back in the Countryside. It was a plan to catch rabbits by hugging the grass: if no rabbits are caught, catching a couple of frogs would still be something.
“We’re just defending the younger brother’s rights. Arlong is the Son, we have no issue with his share, but there’s no way the other portion should go to Kiara!”
“Right! She has the gall to take the leftover money from the younger brother without even wearing mourning clothes!”
“Hehe, alright, you want it, no problem.” When Mario Yuno said this, the place fell deadly quiet.
People were wondering why he was being so agreeable. Some even smugly thought the trip had been worth it.
They dared to cause such a fuss, relying on the notion that Kiara’s in-laws were wealthy, guessing that folks with money cared about their reputations and wouldn’t want to cause a rift over a small interest, especially since not wearing mourning clothing would indeed make her look bad if word got out.
But then, Mario Yuno pulled out a stack of bills from his pocket and flaunted it before their eyes.
“According to the regulations we have now, an heir is also responsible for debt repayment. These bills are for his hospital stays, gambling debts, funeral expenses, and more, which all add up to over 200,000. Whoever takes on this debt can have the old house in the Countryside.”
With that one sentence, everyone was stunned.
They looked at one another, completely unprepared for this move.
Second Uncle said sheepishly, “How could it be so much… we had no idea…”
“You? Hehe, who do you think paid for his repeated gambling debts when he was outside? You think the cost of chemotherapy and such was cheap? As a laid-off worker without medical insurance, all of these expenses were paid by my daughter-in-law, including the plot where he’s now buried. Do you know how much a piece of land costs?”
His argument was sound and indisputable.
Kiara might have spoken harshly, but in the end, she still didn’t completely let him starve to death outside. Once Mario Yuno produced the evidence, at least half of the crowd’s anger was extinguished, but some were still not convinced and sought to fight on.
Second Aunt whispered, “Being a child, it’s her duty to do these things. What, just because she did something for her own father, should we present her with an honor scroll to acknowledge her nobility?”
“Hehe, this selfish old vixen with wrinkles enough to kill flies is hilarious. I speak to you of decency, and you talk back with law. I talk of law, and you preach morality. So, it’s always on your terms? When my daughter-in-law was footing the bills, all of you were conveniently blind, fixating on the issue of clothes, waving the flag of morality with greed at its heart. Who is really disturbing the peace of the deceased?”
Mario Yuno’s sharp gaze swept around the room, “My daughter-in-law doesn’t need your dirty honor scrolls, but let me put it this way, if anyone dares to disturb the life of my daughter-in-law or my mother-in-law, I’ll personally deliver a flag to each and every one of you–”
He added another line, “A white one!”
To make sure you’ve had your fill of ‘mourning’!
In the end, it was still Camden who had an aura; these people only dared to bark a few times when they saw he was in a good mood. When Camden got tough, they all cowered, unable to utter a word against his rebukes.
There was only one person in the crowd who remained defiant, and that was Uncle’s eldest son, who had had a bit to drink today. Fueled by alcohol, his words were foul and disrespectful, a mouth full of bodily organs, principally insulting Mario Yuno with profanities and questioning what he amounted to.
