Chapter 79: Regret

"Xavier, for dinner, we should order our food. I feel sorry for letting you cook for us," Iris said casually while looking at him. However, the moment she saw his shining golden-yellow eyes staring back at her, she felt her heart skip a beat.

For a while, they entered a staring contest seemingly with no end, and neither was willing to budge.

However, when Iris smelled the burning aroma, she was snapped out of her thoughts. In a hurry, she warned him, "Xavier, we might eat burnt steak if you don’t—" She couldn’t finish her words as she saw Xavier in a flash, flipping the meat and ignoring her.

’Gosh! Looks like this handsome, perfect Xavier Darkwood has flaws too...’ she chuckled inwardly and started to pay attention to her surroundings.

When her eyes fell on the outdoor firepit, she wondered if it would be fun if they could sit there and enjoy the night later. However, when she imagined that Xavier might not like the idea, she became reluctant to express her thoughts.

’No... No... It would be a disaster if we sat there without anyone speaking, right? It’s better to propose a new idea!’ Iris smiled bitterly and glanced at him. She was surprised to see him finished with the meat and about to walk back to the house.

"Let’s go inside, Iris," Xavier led the way. She followed him in a hurry and set the table for them.

...

Iris sat in her seat, facing the nicely plated steak on the table. She eagerly tasted Xavier’s cooking. Looking at how beautifully he prepared their lunch, she felt like dining in a restaurant.

"Stop gazing at your plate, Iris," Xavier teased when he noticed her beaming at her food, "Or perhaps you’re waiting for me to cut the meat into small pieces?"

She snapped back to reality upon hearing his words. Without hesitation, she reached for a knife and fork and began savoring her meal. The meat melted in her mouth instantly, and she was taken aback by the flawless taste that danced on her tongue. As she relished each bite, her gaze kept drifting back to Xavier, who continued to look at her with mesmerizing intensity. She blinked a few times, surprised by the fascination in his eyes.

"This is truly delicious, Xavier," Iris said sincerely.

In all her years, the steak she savored had claimed the top spot on her list of the best steaks she’d ever tasted. Even the last steak she had shared with him at Silenthill hadn’t earned a place in her top five.

"I’m delighted to hear that," Xavier responded nonchalantly as he began to slice into his own steak.

Iris no longer paid attention to Xavier; she was utterly engrossed in enjoying her food. In a matter of minutes, her plate was emptied. Only then did she remember the salad, the second dish Xavier had prepared for their lunch.

Despite her usual disinterest in vegetables, the delectable T-bone steak had piqued her curiosity about the taste of the salad. Could he succeed in enticing her to enjoy vegetables as well?

"How is it?" Xavier asked after observing her take a mouthful of salad.

She didn’t respond immediately. Instead, she cleared her mouth, placed her spoon on the plate, and locked eyes with him. She smiled warmly before asking, "Mister Xavier Darkwood, please be honest with me... Have you ever taken a cooking course?"

A faint smile graced Xavier’s face as he responded, "I haven’t. I simply like watching cooking shows on TV and YouTube," he said.

As an immortal being who has been in this world for centuries, Xavier spends his time doing many things. He learned a variety of skills and honed his expertise in various fields. He could excel at virtually anything, surpassing even the most accomplished experts out there. The amount of knowledge he had accumulated over centuries made him forget what abilities he had.

Preparing this meal marked the first time he had cooked it for someone else in decades.

’How strange! Why do I suddenly feel an urgent need to do anything just to give her happiness?’ Xavier pondered, his mind clouded by confusion. Ever since this girl had awakened from her coma, she had become the focal point of his thoughts.

...

"You should teach me how to cook, Xavier," Iris said earnestly. If she wants to start learning how to cook, Xavier is the ideal mentor she wants. The flavors of the meal he had prepared today left her yearning for more of his culinary creations.

"No need to learn. I can cook for you every day. It’s not a big deal," Xavier replied calmly. However, for Iris, it felt as though something was pricking at her heart.

Surprised by his words, Iris felt her throat go dry. She hurriedly finished the glass of water before her to soothe her parched throat.

’This man wants to cook for me? Every day?’

Iris found herself growing increasingly perplexed by Xavier’s recent act. It felt as though they were in a relationship, and she couldn’t help but question whether their supposed relationship was genuine or just her being delusional.

She tried to meet his gaze and determine if he really meant what he said or was just being random. Or did she hear wrong?

After a few moments, Iris mustered the courage to loudly voice her thoughts, "Xavier, this—" However, before she could complete her sentence, her cell phone on the table vibrated.

She stiffened when she saw the name ’Senior G’ displayed on her phone.

’Why is Gavriel calling me on my personal phone? Why now?’ Iris wondered, hesitating to answer the call with Xavier right in front of her. However, she soon heard Xavier speaking to her.

"Iris, you can answer the phone. It might be important. Or else why your cousin Gavriel is calling you now," Xavier said calmly. Still, it sounded like a warning of something severe was coming for Iris.

Now, she regretted telling him that Gavriel was her cousin.
