Chapter 78: Stunned By His Skill
As soon as Iris stepped into the white house, she was greeted by a wave of warm air that instantly lifted her mood.
The house is not very wide but long and offers unobstructed beach views. What immediately catches her eye when she enters is the open-concept design of the room; the living room is connected to the dining room, with a spacious modern kitchen in the corner.
The interior was beautifully arranged with modern furniture. White and earth tones dominated the room. Even without a lamp, the room still looks bright, thanks to the abundance of natural light coming in through the large glass windows that frame the stunning sea views.
For a brief moment, she stood near the glass window, once again marveling at the beauty of the sea. Even though she was now inside the house, the sound of the waves crashing in the distance could still be faintly heard, deepening her liking for this place.
She had grown weary of the bustling city in her previous life, feeling trapped in her apartment and yearning for something more. She longed for what the city couldn’t offer her: nature, silence, and fresh air.
This place had been her dream before her previous life had come to an end—a peaceful retreat in a small yet modern house like this, exclusively for her, featuring a million-dollar view that she could enjoy daily while engaging herself in nature.
However, in her second life, she found herself unable to fully embrace the dream she had once longed for, as she was still bound to her past life as an assassin.
’God, I hope this assignment won’t last forever. I pray for your mercy and the blessing to live the life I dream of,’ she silently murmured to herself as her eyes took in the breathtaking scenery before her.
Satisfied with the view from her current spot, Iris promptly removed her coat and placed it on the sofa. At the same time, her gaze shifted to Xavier, who was busily working in the modern kitchen.
She was taken aback by the sight of him for a moment, skillfully slicing through something. He looked like a skillful chef, the kind she often watched on YouTube channels. Iris walked over to him and stood near the kitchen island.
"Xavier, you can cook?" she asked curiously.
Xavier raised his head briefly to glance at her. "Yes, I will be preparing our lunch," he replied, not missing a beat as he continued chopping various vegetables.
"Is there anything I can assist with?" Iris offered, despite her complete lack of cooking skills. She couldn’t just stand by idly while he worked alone.
Xavier didn’t answer right away, as if he was thinking something. After a few more seconds, he finally said, "Of course. Could you continue chopping these vegetables? I need to grill the meat outside."
"Absolutely," she agreed, joining him in the kitchen. However, Xavier appeared concerned about entrusting her with a knife. "Please be careful. Don’t hurt yourself," he cautioned before making his way to the outdoor grill.
Iris couldn’t help but chuckle at his warning. She didn’t require any special skills to handle this task. Simply observing Xavier’s technique allowed her to mimic it effortlessly, as she was already quite skillful at using a knife.
After finishing cutting vegetables as Xavier requested, Iris realized that he was preparing salad and T-bone steak for their lunch.
Iris was genuinely impressed that Xavier seemed to be an expert at making the food she usually enjoyed at restaurants. In her previous life, her cooking skills were limited to boiling eggs and heating frozen food only.
’It seems like I should make an effort to learn how to cook in this life,’ Iris vowed to herself as she made her way outside through the back door near the kitchen to check on Xavier.
As she stepped into the backyard, she was taken aback by the sight that greeted her — a beautiful garden filled with various beautiful, blooming flowers surrounding a charming firepit. Xavier was stationed in the outdoor kitchen, diligently grilling the meat. The backyard was surrounded by towering trees, making it feel like she was in her backyard in Silenthill in spring.
"Why are you coming out?" Xavier asked when he noticed Iris without her coat. "Go back inside; the air is quite cold here," he said, sounding concerned.
Iris shook her head, ignoring his warning. She continued walking toward him along the natural stone path leading to the outdoor kitchen.
"It’s not cold. It feels warm here, much warmer than the temperature in Silenthill," Iris replied as she stood beside him near the grill. She feels even warmer.
Xavier remained silent and returned his attention to grilling the meat, allowing her to stand close.
"I finished preparing everything inside. Any other tasks?" Iris asked when she noticed his silence.
"No. I’ll just finish this one, and then we can eat. Are you hungry already?" he asked, glancing at her. It was nearly 2 PM, and she hadn’t eaten anything yet, so he was concerned she might be hungry.
"No, I’m not that hungry," Iris replied honestly. In her previous life, she didn’t have much of an appetite; coffee and snacks were her preferred choices, especially if she was on a mission.
"How about you? You seem hungry, Xavier," she asked, glancing at his pale face. She couldn’t help but wonder why his skin appeared so pale and why he always felt cold whenever they made physical contact.
"Same with you. I’m not that hungry. But we must eat before resting," Xavier responded.
"Oh, you’re right. We should rest," Iris agreed, suddenly recalling that Xavier had driven for three hours to get to this place.
’Gosh! How could I forget? He must be exhausted, yet he continued to prepare our lunch,’ Iris thought, feeling guilty.
"Xavier, for dinner, we should order food. I feel sorry for letting you cook for us," she said casually while looking at him. However, the moment she saw his shining golden-yellow eyes staring back at her, she felt her heart skip a beat.
