Chapter 70: Express Doubt
Chapter 70: Express Doubt
After ordering a few cakes and a sweet drink, Iris gazed at Gavriel with a serious expression.
"Can you answer my damn question!?" Iris asked in a hushed tone, afraid someone might overhear them; however, her expression looked irritated.
Gavriel was stunned when he saw her angry. ’Why is she in a bad mood again?’ he wondered while attempting to read her mind. But when he remembered he couldn’t do that anymore, his face slowly turned dark. Felt annoyed.
"Iris, you can speak casually. I’ve already placed a seal around us. No one can hear what we’re saying, even if you scream," he replied, maintaining his calm face.
"Oh, really?" Iris tried to check her surroundings but couldn’t discern anything.
"You won’t be able to see anything," he chuckled, shaking his head, feeling amused. "What was your question again?"
Iris felt relieved and repeated her question about how her target died naturally when she clearly remembered shooting him.
"Please explain to me why that happens. This is confusing!" She waits nervously to hear Gavriel’s explanation.
After a few seconds had passed, Gavriel finally said, "It was probably Lucian who did that. He erases your trace at the crime scene."
Iris was surprised to hear that. ’What!? Lucian was the one who had come to collect Alberto West’s soul!?’
Before she could ask him, she heard Gavriel say,
"This is why you need me on your first assignment. Many things I need to guide you, like how to erase your trace," he said while shaking his head, feeling helpless. If this girl failed her first assignment, he might be punished. Fortunately, she succeeded in her first assignment, even though she did it alone.
"Sorry, Gavriel... I didn’t notice you. I thought I just needed to kill my target," Iris said, feeling sorry as she realized she had almost messed everything up. "Last night, I actually erased my traces, but only to make sure no CCTV could record me and my fingerprints... Well, something like what I usually did in my previous life—" She suddenly paused, remembering her lost memories.
"Gavriel, I need to—" She paused again when a beautiful waitress in a tight white shirt and a short skirt that barely covered her seductive curves came to serve their order.
"Hello, this is your order..." The female waitress said, her eyes fixed on Gavriel without even glancing at Iris for a second. "This is a special treat just for you, handsome brother..." She giggled and placed a chocolate cake on the table before Gavriel.
"Thank you," Gavriel said gently, smiling at the girl.
Seeing the handsome man smile at her, the female waitress felt overjoyed. "E-Enjoy!" She said softly, blinking several times at him before continuing her words, "Handsome brother, if you need anything, please call me." She placed a tissue on the table and then turned to leave.
Iris almost cracked up when she saw a phone number on that tissue and sensed the waitress’s emotions, enough to tell her what might happen if Gavriel decided to call that waitress. Gosh!
...
"I want to ask you about something else," Iris said after finishing her cheesecake. She gently placed the plate on the table, and when she saw him nod, she continued, "About my lost memories, you mentioned that I will remember them again, right?"
"Yes, that’s true. Have you started to remember?" Gavriel was taken aback by how quickly her memories were returning.
’Who is she, really? How can she gain God’s favor and also attract Lucian and Xavier?’ Gavriel wondered while narrowing his eyes and staring into her eyes. This girl was beginning to pique his curiosity even more, mainly because he couldn’t read her memories and thoughts anymore. This left him feeling helpless and afraid at the same time.
"Not yet. I haven’t remembered anything. Instead, I want to ask," she said, feeling helpless. "How can I remember those memories? You mentioned to me before that something might trigger my memories, right?" she asked.
"Yes, if you encounter someone from your past, the memories will slowly come back," Gavriel patiently explained the details to her.
Iris was delighted to hear that. "Oh, so I just need to encounter them?" she asked again, seeking confirmation.
"Yes."
Iris fell silent. In her few days back in this world, she felt nothing significant except for the gun she saw at Xavier’s house. However, it seemed like the weapon was unrelated to her memories; she was simply in awe of his collection.
’Apparently, I’ll have to wait even longer to regain my memories!’ She silently felt frustrated. In the last few days, she felt her mind was torturing her, as there was something she desperately wanted to remember. However, no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t recall it.
While Iris was in deep thought, Gavriel’s eyes glanced outside, where darkness was beginning to fall. Just before he wanted to ask her to go home, he remembered something.
"Iris, have you chosen your reward yet?" he asked while sipping his hot chocolate.
"I had two choices, teleportation and mind control, and I chose Mind Controller," she explained.
"Good choice, Iris. That ability will be beneficial to you later on," Gavriel agreed with her choice.
"I know, but I’ve only obtained level one, and the ability is limited," Iris said, not feeling entirely satisfied. "Gavriel, something strange—"
"Strange?" Gavriel raised his eyebrow, curious about her concern.
"Yes. I tried to use my ability on Xavier and his cousin, but I couldn’t sense their emotions. Why?" Iris asked.
"That’s because they are not human," Gavriel wanted to say, but, of course, he couldn’t. He could only say, "Because your boyfriend may have a stronger mental mind than you, that’s why you can’t use your ability on him."
"So it’s the same with you, huh? I can’t read yours either," Iris said, her shoulders shrinking before she continued, "I hope I reach the next level soon enough so I can use it when I have to face bad people who are stronger than me... or Xavier." Her eyes beamed with anticipation at that thought.
Gavriel was rendered speechless. He felt sorry for her; even though she had reached level five, she might be unable to read Xavier’s mind.
