Chapter 66: Sudden Appearance
After she sent the text, there was no reply from Gavriel. It made her impatient. She decided to call him but restrained herself when she saw Xavier sitting opposite her.
Iris tried to distract herself by checking another news story, but not long after, she heard Justin’s voice calling her. She turned to look in his direction.
She was surprised to see Justin and Niles approaching them.
"Lower your voice, Justin!" Iris glared at him. "This is the library, and Xavier was sleeping. You can’t make noise here," she scolded in a hushed tone. "And how did you guys know we were here?"
Justin was momentarily speechless. It was evident that Xavier hadn’t been asleep at all. Earlier, they had communicated through their minds, and he had told him to come here.
"Someone informed us that you guys were here," Justin explained in a low voice, not wanting to upset the young lady before him. "Iris, it’s lunchtime. Let’s go to the cafeteria," he suggested.
"I’m not hungry," Iris replied, glancing at her watch. It was indeed lunchtime. "You guys can go ahead. I’ll stay here and wait for Xavier to wake up—" She paused when she saw Xavier’s eyes gradually opening. When their eyes met, she swallowed nervously.
"You need to eat, Iris," Xavier said with concern. "Let’s go—"
"No. I’m still full. I’ll eat later," Iris insisted, not wanting to go to the cafeteria. She believed all eyes would be on her again if she went there with this trio, and she didn’t want to be the center of attention.
Xavier didn’t press her any further, but concern still flashed in his gaze. He knew that humans like her needed to eat. At the same time, for immortal beings like him, food was merely an act to avoid arousing suspicion.
Iris halted her search for news about Alberto West, instead pretending to study the file Justin gave her.
However, as usual, Justin managed to distract her once more. "Iris, earlier, are you really sure you answered the questions correctly?"
Iris remained silent.
Receiving no response, Justin persisted, "It’s unbelievable. You finished the test the fastest, but I have a feeling you might fail this time."
Iris closed her laptop, casting a narrow-eyed glance at this idiot, Justin. She then challenged him, saying, "Tell me, Justin, perhaps you can see the future? How do you know I might fail?"
"Bwahaha—" Justin’s booming laughter echoed. Still, a second later, he covered his mouth upon seeing the stern glares from Xavier and the others. "Oops... Sorry... I forgot we’re in a library," he lowered his voice as he leaned closer to Iris.
He whispered to her, "Well, Iris, I don’t possess any such ability. So, I’m sorry to disappoint you about reading the future. But I know it because you almost failed the exam last semester. And that despite being the last person to finish it."
"Oh, shut up, Justin. Your concerns are groundless. I’ll prove to you that I can outscore you..." Iris wanted to say that, but she held back her words as a mischievous idea flashed through her mind.
A malicious smile played on her lips as she proposed, "How about we make a bet? If I fail, you can ask me to do anything. And if I manage to outscore you, you’ll have to do anything I ask. How does that sound?"
Justin was surprised by her idea but agreed with enthusiasm. Teasing this young lady later promised to be fun.
"Alright, deal!" Justin said proudly, a big grin on his face. However, his grin instantly faded when he remembered that Xavier was sitting opposite them.
Justin swallowed hard as he glanced at Xavier. To his surprise, though. Xavier paid them no attention; he didn’t seem interested in their conversation and was engrossed in reading on his iPad.
’Huh! Why is Lord Xavier so calm and uninterested? He didn’t even warn me to stop talking to Iris as he usually does?’ Justin was puzzled but eventually put aside his curiosity and continued the conversation with Iris.
Iris was pleased to see Justin fall into her trap. She wouldn’t have dared to challenge him if she were still the same young Iris. However, now she was a person with a photographic memory, the challenge would be within her grasp. This wasn’t her first time taking a business class; in her previous life, she had majored in it and graduated summa cum laude from her university.
"Niles, will you be our witness, all right?" Iris asked seriously.
"Of course!" Niles replied, even though he felt sorry for Iris in his heart because she would lose to Justin. However, he couldn’t do anything about it, mainly because Lord Xavier remained silent.
"Thank you, Niles," Iris said, then glanced at Justin again. "Don’t back out, Justin! I’ll hold your word."
"Cool!" Justin proudly declared, patting his chest gently. "I’m a man of my word. Don’t worry, my dear friend," he chuckled.
After a couple of hours,
Their second exam began.
Like the previous one, Iris was the first student to complete the test. She left the class with Xavier, as they had done before.
Iris followed Xavier outside the building. The sky still shone brightly, but the temperature remained below zero. She felt freezing. She tightened her coat as she matched her steps with Xavier’s.
She didn’t plan to go home immediately because she needed to visit Daisy’s shop. She wanted to ask Daisy to buy something for her from another city.
Glancing at Xavier, she said, "Xavier, you don’t have to drop me off at my house. I still have to—" Suddenly, Iris paused her words as she noticed Xavier’s face darkening, his gaze sharply fixed in a certain direction.
’Why does he look so annoyed?’ Iris wondered.
Following Xavier’s line of sight, she turned her gaze, and her heartbeat almost stopped. There, she saw a familiar figure leaning against a white Maserati Levante, looking stunning with his tall stature. His presence in the parking lot was bound to attract attention from the passing students.
