Chapter 64: The Shocking News (2)
As they made their way to Silent Hill University, Iris attempted to sense other people’s emotions on the street. Still, she couldn’t feel anything—it stressed her. She assumed she needed to be closer to her target to succeed, so she gave up trying.
However, when she glanced at Niles, a thought crossed her mind. She tried to sense Niles’ emotions, but just like with Xavier and Justin, she couldn’t pick up anything from him.
’Why do all three of them seem to have stronger mental defenses than me?’ Iris questioned herself, feeling confused and frustrated. It’s sad to have such extraordinary abilities but fail to use them on those close to her. Now, she felt a growing need to upgrade this ability; perhaps reaching level two would make her powers more potent.
After several failed attempts, she set aside her curiosity and focused on the street. However, upon their arrival at the main gate, Justin suddenly exclaimed in surprise.
"What on earth is this? Our professor is really a serial killer?" Justin was shocked as he read something on his cell phone.
"Which professor?" asked Niles, in the midst of parking their car, casting a curious glance at Justin.
"Alberto West!" Justin quickly looked at Niles before returning his focus to the shocking news on his device.
"How could he become our professor with a criminal record? If I’m not mistaken, he already worked at this university five years ago, right? Why doesn’t anyone know about him?" Niles expressed his surprise at the news.
"Indeed. Why didn’t anyone know about his crimes? And, you know what? Someone killed him last night. That’s why the police found out about him. This is crazy!" Justin exclaimed.
Justin then shifted his gaze to the back row, where Xavier appeared calm, engrossed in reading something on his iPad. He didn’t seem interested in the news about Alberto West.
"Xavier, are you aware of this?" Justin asked, curious to hear Xavier’s opinion, knowing Xavier had the ability to read people’s memories and thoughts. He must have known about Alberto’s crimes, right?
Justin wasn’t the only one curious; Niles was as well. He glanced at the rearview mirror to look at Xavier, but something caught his attention: Iris’ demeanor. Despite hearing this shocking news, she appeared remarkably composed, showing no distress when discussing Professor Alberto’s horrendous crimes.
"Yes, I’m aware," Xavier replied calmly as he exited the car.
When Xavier closed the door, Niles shifted his gaze to Iris and asked, "How about you, Iris? Did you already know about this incident?"
Iris, who was about to open the car door, suddenly paused upon hearing Niles’ question.
"Niles, of course, I knew," Iris paused briefly to offer him a casual smile. "The news has been trending on social media. It seems like you found out late..." she answered him calmly.
And, without waiting for his response, she quickly exited the car. She hastened her steps to catch up with Xavier, who was already heading toward the faculty building.
As Iris and Xavier walked toward their class, Xavier posed a question, "You seem rather calm by Professor West’s death news?"
Iris tried to appear nonchalant, not wanting to arouse any suspicion in Xavier.
"Of course, I was deeply shocked," she replied, adopting a casual tone. "You remember I spent some time in your bathroom earlier, right? Well, that time, I read that news on social media. It was just too sudden. I mean, yesterday, he was perfectly fine, and he even tried to—" Iris stopped herself when a few classmates passed by, teasing them as the ’campus couple.’ She could feel embarrassed, her cheeks heating up, but she tried to ignore them.
"I understand," Xavier remarked, impressed by how composed Iris seemed, considering what she had done to Alberto West.
"What’s your opinion on his crimes?" Xavier inquired as they found a quieter spot to walk.
Iris didn’t respond immediately, taking a few moments to choose her words carefully. After a brief pause, she said, "My stomach feels sick. I almost vomited after remembering how disgusting that old man was yesterday. You heard exactly what his intentions were towards me, right?" she asked.
"Hmm, I heard everything. That’s why I’m relieved he’s no longer a threat. That scumbag won’t bother you again," Xavier affirmed before entering the classroom.
Iris was slightly surprised by his words but chose not to respond, simply following him into the classroom.
...
The classroom was nearly full.
Iris walked with steady and composed steps, following Xavier to the back row, where she sat just beside him. She felt grateful because most of her classmates appeared engrossed in discussing Professor Alberto West’s death, seemingly oblivious to her presence.
They still had five minutes left before the exam began, so Iris used that time to test her new abilities.
She first focused on the two boys sitting in front of her. In just a matter of seconds, a faint smile appeared on her lips as she sensed the anger simmering within the minds of the two men. They seemed furious about the news regarding their professor.
Having succeeded with those closest to her, Iris didn’t halt her experiments. She made further attempts to sense the emotions of her classmates seated farther away. As before, she found success. A satisfied smile graced her as she could sense their emotions and also successfully manipulated their emotions.
However, a nagging question troubled her mind at that moment, ’Why can’t I feel anything from Xavier, Justin, and Niles?’ This concern stressed her out.
As Iris lost herself in thought, Ruby Winters entered the room. Without hesitation, Iris decided to tune into Ruby’s emotions, and at that very moment, Ruby’s gaze locked onto Iris.
Iris couldn’t help but inwardly chuckle as she sensed the intense anger radiating from Ruby. However, Ruby’s anger wasn’t directed at Professor Alberto West; it was because she saw Iris sitting with Xavier.
’I swear, Iris Gray, I’ll make sure to get rid of you!!’ Ruby Winters thought, her eyes fixed sharply on Iris
