Chapter 63: The Shocking News (1)
After giving up asking Xavier to punish Justin, Iris turned her attention to her cell phone. Ignoring Xavier, who also seemed reluctant to talk to her.
However, she started to feel a bit uneasy sitting in the room just with him. This man really knew how to test her nerves, and even his silence sent a shiver down her spine.
She didn’t like this feeling!
Checking her watch a few times, she mumbled under her breath, ’Why does ten minutes feel like forever?’
Her gaze occasionally stops at him just to check his expression. But his expression is unchanged. Cold and distance!
"Iris, just go ahead and say what’s on your mind," Xavier’s voice breaks the silence, making her snap out slightly.
Hurriedly, she turns her gaze toward the frozen lake outside while scolding him in her mind. She had thought he would cease the conversation, but he surprised her.
"Why are you avoiding me?" he asked once more.
After taking a moment to collect herself and put on a composed expression, she faced him, a casual smile gracing her lips.
"Mind if I use your bathroom?" she asked calmly, though inwardly cursing herself for the stupid question. She didn’t really need to go to the bathroom now. This was just an excuse to not stay in this room with him.
’Gosh! Iris, you have to work hard to not feel intimidated and timid around him, or anyone who sees you will tell you just putting on a show, not really dating him!’ Once more, she reminded herself. Feeling annoyed with herself.
"Sure. You know where it is, right?" Xavier asked.
"Yeah, I know," she replied before heading to the bathroom.
...
Even the bathroom in this place appeared luxurious, boasting a million-dollar view. Seated on the chaise within the bathroom, Iris could gaze upon the forest, now cloaked in a blanket of snow, through a vast glass wall. For a few seconds, she contented her eyes, relishing the view.
Afterward, Iris directed her attention to her cell phone, checking the local news. She was eager to learn about the developments regarding Alberto West.
Did the police believe the information she sent?
When her eyes landed on what she had been searching for, a smile adorned her face as she read the news. Almost all news portals featured headlines reporting the discovery of Alberto West’s dead body. The authorities have identified him as a serial killer and pedophile on the run for years under various aliases.
Alberto West’s crimes are horrible. He is not only a pedophile but also a serial killer being chased by this country’s law enforcement. However, he escaped and hid in this small town over the years using his real identity.
"It looks like the police in this small town were smart and worked diligently!" Iris thought silently, feeling a sense of pride.
This case has caused a stir throughout Country K. This case no longer just appears on the internet but also on local and national TV channels and news portals. In fact, Iris discovered that foreign news portals were also covering the story.
She didn’t really care about Alberto. What worried her now was the fate of the children in the house. However, she didn’t find any news about them.
’Where are they now? Is the authority keeping this information secret to protect their identities?’ She wondered while attempting to search for the news once more. But suddenly, she heard a knock on the door.
"Iris! Are you ready? We have to leave now..." Xavier shouted from outside, startling Iris.
She promptly flushed the toilet and exited the bathroom, tucking her cell phone into her coat.
"Are you okay?" Xavier asked with concern, studying her face. "If you’re not feeling well, I can make a call to ask permission—"
"I’m fine!" Iris cut him off. "I’m really fine... Let’s go." She briskly walked to the seating area and grabbed her bag, hiding her embarrassed face from Xavier.
Iris’ expression left Xavier puzzled, but he chose not to press her further, simply following her out of the house. As they neared the main door, Iris paused, seemingly waiting for him.
"Justin’s driving us?" Iris asked when she saw another car parked at the entrance.
"Yes. I’ve got to study, so I can’t drive," Xavier replied casually, striding towards the car.
"Xavier," Iris said, matching his pace, "Next time, no need to ask Justin to drive. I can drive for us." She said sincerely. However, her words surprised Xavier.
He abruptly halted and turned to face her, a faint smile gracing his lips. "Alright, next time, but not this time."
He opened the car door for her, leaving Iris momentarily stunned. ’Why is he being so nice again? He even opened the car door for me.’
"Thank you," Iris murmured softly before getting into the car. To her surprise, she spotted Niles in the driver’s seat. "Hi, Niles..."
Niles acknowledged her with a slight nod while Justin, seated beside Niles, began reminding Iris about their upcoming exam.
"Iris, have you read the file I gave you?" Justin turned to see Iris behind him, a genuine concern flashing through his gaze.
"Yes. Thanks to you, Justin, I believe I’ll do well this time..." Iris chuckled as she glanced at Justin; however, when she saw him roll his eyes, she added, "Oh, come on... Why don’t you have faith in me?" she said, sounding a bit annoyed.
"Hahaha, Iris Gray... you always say that, but you usually end up with the lowest score among our group," Justin remarked before gazing at the street. He continued, "But don’t worry, Iris. Even if your score is the lowest among the three of us, it’s still respectable compared to the rest of our classmates. You don’t have to worry..." He tried to cheer her up.
Iris was speechless.
In truth, her younger self and her academic performance had been awful. Because all this time, she rarely studied and only focused on her teenage world, chasing her idols and Xavier.
’Gosh! How pathetic, this young Iris’ life!’ She silently scolds herself.
She promised herself; This time, she will try her best to beat this fool, Justin, in academics!
