Chapter 56: Lucian

At Gray Cafe,

When Iris arrived at her house, it was already past 9 pm and the house was pitch black, only a few small lights could be seen shining through.

She can’t spot where her grandma is now. Her ’God Eye’ ability is only active during missions and disappears when her goal is reached once she is in a safe place. The temporary activation of this superhuman ability pissed her off a bit. If only she could obtain that extraordinary power indefinitely, surely that would be amazing, right?

Stepping out of the car, Iris swiftly retrieved two bags. She no longer relies on her grandmother to open the door, as she now holds a spare key. However, before ascending to the second floor of her bedroom, she decided to check her grandma first.

"Grandma, are you asleep?" Iris asked while gently knocking on the bedroom door. After a short pause, her grandmother’s voice came from inside.

"Iris, back already?" Cassandra’s voice emerged, and the door swung open shortly after that. The sight of her granddaughter’s early return seemed to surprise her. "Why do you come home early? You could’ve stayed longer at Xavier’s place, my dear..."

Her grandmother’s words left Iris momentarily speechless. "Oh, come on, Grandma. Can you please stop saying that?" Iris replied, her head shaking with slight annoyance. She found her grandmother’s teasing somewhat upsetting; her face was now flushed with embarrassment.

Cassandra’s laugh echoed in the room as she affectionately tapped Iris’ head.

"Hahaha... Oh, my dear Iris, why are your cheeks blushing? Haven’t you always wanted this, to be with him? Well, the opportunity has come for you to enjoy, my dear." Her words, filled with gentleness, only deepened the crimson color in Iris’ cheeks.

Iris, "..."

"Grandma, please stop it... Even though I have feelings for him, please don’t utter those words again, especially in his presence. It’s too embarrassing," Iris protested with a gentle plea.

Cassandra found herself chuckling once more at the sight of her granddaughter’s sulking demeanor. "Alright, Grandma will stop teasing you. Have you had dinner yet? I can prepare something for you—"

"No need. I’m still quite full," Iris interjected. "Grandma, you should go back to sleep. I’m heading to my room... I need to study now. I have an exam tomorrow."

Once her grandmother closed the door, Iris hurried to her room. Curiosity surged within her as she anticipated claiming her initial reward. Simultaneously, she was determined to eliminate any trace of her way back to her house.

She also needs to provide subtle clues to the police regarding Alberto West’s evil acts, thereby aiding the children trapped in that ominous house.

Just as Iris was about to open her laptop, her cell phone vibrated. She was taken aback when Xavier’s name illuminated her screen.

She playfully slapped her forehead. "Gosh! How could I forget to text him?" she muttered, then picked up the phone.

"Hey, Xavier," Iris greeted with a cheerful tone. "Why the call?" she asked nonchalantly, berating herself for her poorly phrased question.

Gosh!

Standing not far from Alberto’s house, Xavier smiled faintly upon hearing her voice. "Have you reached home?"

"Yeah, I have, but I got caught up with things here, so I didn’t text you right away," Iris replied, a hint of guilt radiating from her words for lying to him; she was too busy getting rid of Alberto and just got home.

"It’s fine. So, what are you doing now?" asked Xavier.

"Just started studying. We have a test tomorrow, remember?" Iris replied, silently punishing herself for continuing to lie to him— she was busy hacking into the city’s police database.

"Indeed, we do. Well then, carry on with your study," Xavier said. His gaze narrowed as he spotted a tall, slender man approaching him. "I’ll be there to pick you up for class tomorrow," he continued, extending a hand to signal the other person to wait.

"Pick me up? Ugh, seriously, Xavier, I can drive—"

"Iris, leave the driving to me. Remember, I promised your grandmother I’d take you to school daily. And I am a man of my word," Xavier interjected, his tone resolute. "Okay then, see you tomorrow." The call terminated before Iris could counter her argument.

Iris, "..."

....

"It has been a while since our last meeting, Lucian," Xavier remarked with a smirk, tucking his cell phone into his coat.

"Xavier, my dear old friend," Lucian responded, his smile carrying an air of familiarity. However, it didn’t quite reach his eyes. The surprise of encountering Xavier in such a remote location left him looking somewhat taken aback. "What brings you to this place?"

"The same could be asked of you," Xavier said, a curiosity lacing his words. "Why are you here? And why was she sent here?"

"Looks like you’re becoming curious about my line of work, Xavier," Lucian observed, narrowing his eyes in a manner that mixed casualness with intrigue.

"Just answer the questions, Lucian. Don’t sidestep it. Why was Iris brought here? What’s the intent behind it?" Xavier’s tone tinged with displeasure. The presence of a God’s Helpers member in this small town made him uneasy as if higher-ups were scrutinizing his actions.

Lucian shrugged nonchalantly, meeting Xavier’s gaze with an unwavering demeanor. "Why the discontent, my friend? I’m just carrying out orders. I didn’t decide to place the girl here. If you want answers, go ask Him in person!"

Xavier’s glare was sharp, but Lucian appeared undisturbed, his attention drifting toward the starlit sky. "No need for that scowl, Xavier. I’m but a messenger..."

Xavier didn’t offer an immediate response to Lucian, his lingering irritation evident through his expression. After a brief interlude of silence shared between them, Xavier finally spoke, his gaze shifting to Lucian. "My debts to Him have been settled. I vow never to set foot in His presence again. That’s my pledge."

"Tsk! You remain the same brooding soul I met the last time, my dear Xavier," Lucian couldn’t help but chuckle, observing that his old friend hadn’t undergone much change despite their prolonged separation. "And why have you chosen to hide yourself in this location?"
