Chapter 53: Completed First Mission (1)

All afternoon, Iris had spent her time watching movies with Justin in the living room. In contrast, Xavier sat in the corner, engrossed in a book, seemingly oblivious to their activities.

As twilight appears on the horizon, signaling the approaching end of the day, Iris finally excused herself. Coincidentally, Xavier also finishes reading his book, and his gaze shifts towards Iris. He dismissed Justin from his sight as he trailed after Iris as she made her way to the entrance.

"Let me drive you," Xavier offered, his voice conveying concern. However, Iris promptly declined the offer, her mind set on driving her new car. She had another place to visit before heading home.

"Are you certain about this? It’s nearly nightfall, Iris. Do you remember the way back home?" Xavier’s worry crept into his words. He felt like he didn’t know himself anymore because he couldn’t entirely suppress his unease when it came to Iris’s well-being.

"Xavier, I’m not a child anymore. I’m almost twenty years old, and besides, I have this," Iris responded as she raised the black bag she held in her hand, revealing her gun bag to him.

"This—" Xavier’s sentence trailed off as he struggled to find the right words to reply to her. He followed her a few steps behind as she walked towards her car.

Upon reaching her car, Xavier’s voice broke through the quiet air. "Iris, do you truly know how to use that gun?"

Iris stopped just before opening the car door, gazing towards Xavier. "If you happen to have access to a shooting range, you could test my marksmanship," a faint smile graced her lips.

Without waiting for Xavier’s response, she swiftly entered the car, starting the engine before rolling down the windshield.

As their eyes met, she spoke reassuringly, "Xavier, there’s no need to worry. I’ll be perfectly fine. If any unforeseen circumstances do arise, I promise to call you..." Once again, Iris smiled to calm his worries, though confusion plagued her mind, ’Why did this man suddenly seem so gentle to me?’

Xavier nodded in response. "Once you’ve arrived home safely, call me, Iris."

"Hmm, goodbye!" Iris said, and with that, she drove off the car.

Remaining in place, Xavier’s gaze lingered on Iris’ car. He only moved from his place after the vehicle had disappeared entirely from his line of sight.

...

When the car reached the main road, Iris stepped on the gas pedal deeper. The car sped faster toward the outskirts of town. And didn’t stop at her house when she passed it.

After several minutes of driving, she eventually reached a narrower road. Here, darkness enveloped the streets, with only her car light and the moon casting its dim light from above.

No other vehicles shared the road with her, and the buildings that appeared around him were getting rarer. She drives even faster.

A few more minutes slipped by as she gradually slowed the car’s speed. She navigated off the road, steering onto the snow-covered expanse of flat land she had meticulously researched the previous night. She brought her car to a halt beneath the towering tree.

Iris didn’t come down immediately. She took her laptop to check something. She wanted to ensure the accuracy of her route to the target location. Also, she tried to erase her traces recorded by the CCTV all the way to this place.

Her fingers danced swiftly across the keyboard, executing a sophisticated series of codes and numbers. Illuminated by the laptop’s soft glow, intricate patterns in light green appear on the dark screen. She breached the CCTV recording system along the route from Xavier’s residence to her present whereabouts within seconds. She deleted her car presence on the recording.

With her initial task done, she shifted her gaze toward the dark sky above.

"Hello there, I need your assistance for a brief while," Iris murmured, a smile gracing her lips.

Her fingers, once again, moved swiftly across the keyboard. Her goal is to use a satellite in the orbit above her location this time.

Iris needed to ensure the safety of her route to the target house, particularly since the landscape was covered in snow. She was concerned about potential injuries from stumbling into hidden holes or encountering dangerous routes that could thwart her plans.

It took Iris a few more minutes to finalize her route. Once she had memorized the path, she shut down her laptop and stowed it securely in her bag.

Keeping her gun beneath her coat, she also hides her natural hair with a wig she had discovered in young Iris’ wardrobe the previous night. Completing her disguise, she wore a black baseball cap and donned a black mask to cover her face. With her preparations complete, she finally got out of the car.

Before moving, she checked her surroundings to ensure no one was tailing her.

Once she confirms everything is safe, she starts sprinting in a specific direction. Her strides remained swift and measured, akin to a jog through a park rather than a run through the dark forest with its challenging terrain veiled in a blanket of snow.

Iris didn’t care about her short breath and the cold night. She forced herself to run as fast as she could. After running for a few minutes, her steps gradually slowed when she reached the hill.

Her eyes sharply stared ahead at the massive house in the middle of the woods.

’Perfect! This old geezer is already home,’ a sinister smile tugged at the corner of her lips as she observed Alberto West’s car parked in the front yard.

Once her breathing had normalized, Iris resumed her advance toward the house, but this time, she didn’t rush to approach the house. She took her time to see her surroundings.

Halting a few meters from the house, she paused before a huge tree behind the building.

Effortlessly, she jumps onto a sturdy tree branch. Her movements flowed seamlessly as she nimbly leaped to another branch, approaching a poised stop at the branch near the second-floor verandah. Concealed within the shadows, she trained her gaze on the glass window before her.

...

Unbeknownst to Iris, a tall, pale-faced man clad in a long black coat stood atop the hill where she had previously stopped. He remained motionless, fixated on her every move.
